vitro cell study
Chapter 4 An additional consideration to take into account is that bone marrow-
derived mesenchymal cells might not be the most appropriate cell model for studying adipogenesis. A recent study comparing the human phenotype of MSCs derived from adipose tissue (AMSCs) and bone marrow (BMSCs) showed that both share a similar immunophenotypic profile and, based on morphological changes (Oil Red O staining), both display positive adipocyte differentiation capabilities, but with AMSCs enhancing differentiation 7 fold more than BMSCs. However, no difference was seen between AMSCs and BMSCs in terms of mRNA expression of marker genes involved in adipogenesis and lipid metabolism (Pachon-Pena et al., 2010).
