Common Wizard Flow Procedures for Storage Device Setup

After the Storage Agent Master is installed, you must configure StorageCollector agents for individual storage devices. You must provide the credentials (account name and password) needed to access each storage device resource when using the Storage Device Setup Wizard.

The Foglight credential management system uses a mechanism called a “lockbox” to let you organize encrypted credentials into meaningful groups. Foglight provides a default lockbox named “System”. For more information, see “Credentials and Lockbox Management” on page 73.

You can create a separate lockbox to group the credentials used for storage devices prior to starting the wizard, using the Credentials dashboard (Dashboards > Administration > Credentials). See the Foglight Administration and Configuration Guide for details on using Foglight credential management.

This section details the common initial steps for configuring storage device agents used to gathering storage data.

The following sections provide detailed procedures for specific storage devices:

• “Configuring Agents to Collect Data from Fibre Channel (FC) Switches” on page 85. • “Configuring Agents to Collect Data from NetApp Filers” on page 95.

To setup a storage device for monitoring:

1 On the navigation panel, under Homes, click Storage Environment. 2 Click the Administration tab.

3 Click Configure Agent for Storage Device Monitoring. or

Click Add.

The Select Foglight Agent Manger page displays. 4 Select the required Host Name.

5 Click Next.

The Select Resource Type page displays.

6 Select the type of storage resource to be monitored. These procedures use a Brocade-FC Switch as an example, but also provide explanations of other supported storage devices.

Note CLARiiON Arrays agents collect data using the SMI-S or CLI protocols. See the procedures for EMC VNX and CLARiiON Monitoring Using SMI or EMC CLARiiON Monitoring Using CLI for details.

7 Click Next.

The Create Agent page displays. This screen creates a StorageCollector agent for the storage device(s) you want to monitor.

For Brocade, VNX/CLARiiON-SMI-S, HP EVA, and HDS storage devices, the following page displays.

For Cisco and NetApp Storage devices, the Port entry does not display, because no port number is required for configuration.

All devices require the entry of an IP address. Some devices allow entry of a port or a path. Refer to the specific storage device sections for details.

IP—Enter the required IP address.

Name (Optional)—Enter a name for the agent, if you do not want the default name. The default name will be in the form of: StSan-devicetype-ip.

Port—Enter the port number if the SMI-S port is not configured to 5988 or 5898.

• Path—If configuring CLARiiON-CLI monitoring, enter the installation path if the CLI is not installed at the default location.

8 Click Next.

The IP checks for proper formatting and a validation message box displays.

The Assign Credential and Validate page of the wizard displays.

Note For details on using Foglight™ for Storage Management credentials, see “Credentials and Lockbox Management” on page 73.

9 From this dialog you can:

• Create new credentials, see “Creating New Credentials” on page 51.

• Select and use existing credentials that have already been created. The same credentials can be used to configure multiple devices. New credentials do not have to be created, see “Selecting an Existing Credential” on page 53.

The Assign Credential and Validate page is updated with the assigned credential.

10 In the Click to Release Lockbox To Client column, click the icon to release the lockbox. Note The lockbox needs to be released only once. This releases the lockbox to the client Agent

Manager Host, making all the credentials in the lockbox available to the agents on that host. If it has been previously released on the main credentials screen or for a previous device setup, it does not need to be released again.

Note If the lockbox was setup as password-protected, the password will be requested to allow release of the lockbox.

11 Click Next. The agent attempts to connect to the storage device, and authenticate with the provided credentials. If authentication is successful, the agent validates that the device will allow collection of topology and performance data.

Note If you get an error while attempting to connect see “Connection Attempt Error Procedures” on page 49.

Note Depending on the device being set up, there may be additional wizard screens described in the section for that particular device.

After successfully connecting, the Agent Configuration Summary page displays.

12 Click Finish to exit the wizard.

Chapter 3—Storage Device Setup and Configuration

The configuration process for the storage device is complete.
