Starting the Configuration/Setup Utility program

TostarttheConfiguration/SetupUtilityprogram,completethefollowing steps:

1. Turn ontheserver.

2. When the promptPress F1 for Configuration/Setup appears,press F1.If you have setbothapower-on passwordandanadministrator password,youmust type theadministrator passwordtoaccessthefullConfiguration/SetupUtility menu.Ifyoudonottypetheadministratorpassword, alimited

Configuration/Setup Utilitymenu isavailable.

3. Selectsettingstovieworchange.

Thestartupsequencespecifies theorderinwhichtheserverchecksdevicesto findabootrecord.Theserverstartsfromthefirstboot recordthatitfinds.Ifthe serverhas WakeonLANhardwareandsoftwareandtheoperatingsystem supportsWakeonLANfunctions,youcanspecifyastartupsequencefor the WakeonLANfunctions.

Ifyouenablethebootfailcount,theBIOSdefaultsettingswillberestoredafter threeconsecutivefailuresto findabootrecord.

Youcanenableavirus-detection testthatchecksfor changesinthebootrecord whentheserverstarts.

Youcanenabletheuseof aUSBlegacykeyboardinaDOS orSystemSetup environment.If akeyboardisdetected,theUSBlegacy operationwillbe disabled.

If yousetapower-on passwordforauserandanadministratorpasswordfor a system administrator,youcantypeeither passwordtocompletethesystemstartup.

Asystemadministratorwho typestheadministrator passwordhasaccesstothefull Configuration/Setup Utilitymenu;thesystemadministrator cangivetheuser authority toset,change, anddeletethepower-on password.Auserwho typesthe power-on passwordhasaccesstoonlythelimitedConfiguration/Setup Utilitymenu;

theusercanset, change,anddeletethepower-on password,ifthesystem administrator hasgiventheuserthatauthority.

Power-on password

If apower-onpasswordisset,whenyouturnontheserver,thesystem startupwill notbecompleteduntilyoutype thepower-onpassword.Youcanuseany

combinationof upto sevencharacters(A–Z,a–z,and0–9)for thepassword.

When apower-onpasswordisset,youcanenabletheUnattendedStartmode,in which thekeyboardandmouseremainlockedbuttheoperating systemcanstart.

You canunlockthekeyboardandmousebytypingthepower-onpassword.

If youforgetthepower-onpassword,you canregainaccesstotheserverinanyof thefollowingways:

v Ifanadministratorpasswordisset,type theadministrator passwordatthe passwordprompt.StarttheConfiguration/SetupUtilityprogramandresetthe power-onpassword.

Light path diagnostic

Remote Supervisor Adapter II SlimLine SAS 1

Whiletheserveristurned off,movethejumperonJ9frompins1 and2 topins 2 and3.Youcanthenstart theConfiguration/Setup Utilityprogramandresetthe power-onpassword.Afteryoureset thepassword, turnoff theserveragainand movethejumperbacktopins1 and2.

Thepower-onpasswordoverrideswitchdoesnotaffecttheadministrator password.

Administrator password

If anadministrator passwordisset,youmusttype theadministrator passwordfor accesstothefullConfiguration/Setup Utilitymenu.You canuseanycombinationof upto sevencharacters(A–Z,a–z,and0–9)forthepassword.TheAdministrator PasswordchoiceisontheConfiguration/SetupUtilitymenu onlyif anoptional IBM Remote SupervisorAdapterIISlimLine isinstalled.

Using the ServerGuide Setup and Installation CD

TheServerGuideSetupandInstallationCDincludesaneasy-to-usesetupand installationprogramthatisdesignedfor yourIBMserver.TheServerGuideprogram detects theservermodelandhardwareoptionsthatareinstalledandusesthat informationduringsetuptoconfigurethehardware.TheServerGuideprogram simplifiesoperating-systeminstallationsbyprovidingupdateddevice driversand,in somecases,installingthem automatically.

Note: TheServerGuideprogramworks onlywith32-bitWindowsoperating systems.

Setup and configuration overview

When youusetheServerGuideSetupandInstallationCD,youdonotneed setup diskettes.You canusetheCDto configureanysupportedIBMservermodel.The setupprogramprovidesa listoftasksthatarerequiredtosetuptheservermodel.

Ona serverwithaServeRAIDadapter,youcanruntheSCSIRAIDconfiguration programto createlogical drives.

Note: Featuresandfunctionscanvaryslightlywithdifferentversionsof the ServerGuideprogram.

Typical operating-system installation

You canusetheServerGuideprogramto shortenyourinstallationtime.The ServerGuideprogramprovidesthedevice driversthatarerequiredforyour hardware andfortheoperatingsystem thatyouareinstalling. Thissection describesa typicalServerGuideoperating-systeminstallation.
