THE COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING
THE DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING
The rem arkable developm ent of electrical industries during th e p ast few years has created a dem and for m en skilled in th e th eo ry and practice of electrical and m echanical work. The stu d y of th e subjects arranged in \the program of Electrical Engineering is intended

to give a general education as well as a special train in g in th e technical branches involved in the various p rac
tica l applications of electricity in industrial operations.
General th eo ry is given in lectures and by recitations from stan d a rd text-books. In th e laboratories and shops th e operations explained in th e class-room are perform ed b y th e stu d en t, in doing which he acquired skill in h a n d ling tools and instrum ents, and obtains a working knowledge of th e principles involved. Careful records of th e work done in laboratories are kept b y th e stu d en t and are handed in for suggestions and corrections a t th e end of every week.
T he U niversity is located near a great m anufacturing centre in th e grow th of which electricity is tak in g a v ery prom inent p art. Electric power generated by steam is now being distrib u ted and utilized in several large plants, some using th e th ree phase alternating system , while others are using th e direct current.
Several of th e largest w ater power developm ents in th e Middle W est are situ ated w ithin a few miles of th e U niversity. F rom this system we receive three phase altern atin g currents which furnish light for our buildings and grounds, and pow er for driving m otors in our shops an d printing office, etc., all of which are operated b y electricity.
There are num erous other transm ission lines and electrical power plants operated b y .w ater power w ithin a sh o rt distance. Our stu d en ts visit these plants accom
panied b y an in stru cto r who points out th e applications of th e tex t-b o o k th eo ry in th e design of electrical ap p aratu s and its operation under actual working conditions.
