Part 3 Execution 3.01 Handling

A. Store and protect non-shrink grout from moisture and contamination.

3.02 Preparation

A. Remove mud, dirt and other foreign materials from areas to be grouted.

3.03 Mixing

A. Mix grout to its fluid, self-leveling consistency in accordance with manufacturers recommendations. Do not retemper grout. Do not exceed manufacturer's maximum limit on water content or use at a consistency which produces free bleeding. Mix grout in a paddle-type mortar mixer. Do not mix by hand.

3.04 Placement

A. Consolidate grout to provide uniformity. Do not vibrate grout.

B. Use forms to contain grout.

3.05 Protection

A. Protect grout and areas to be grouted from excessive heat and cold in accordance with manufacturer's specifications. Protect grout from excessive drying shrinkage resulting from wind or direct sunlight. Protect areas grouted from excessive vibrations for three days.

Masonry Mortar

Part 1 General 1.01 Scope

A. The work covered by this section consists of furnishing all labor, equipment and material required to ensure the proper proportioning of materials for masonry mortar and related work as described herein and or shown on the Drawings.

1.02 Storage and Protection

A. Cementitious materials shall be delivered to the site in unbroken bags or other approved containers, plainly marked and labeled with the manufacturer's name and brand.

B. Cementitious materials shall be handled in a manner which will prevent the inclusion of foreign materials and damage by water or dampness.

1.03 Quality Assurance

A. Materials shall conform to the current editions of the following standards:

1. Masonry Cement: ASTM C91.

2. Aggregate for Masonry Mortar: ASTM C 144.

3. Portland Cement: ASTM C 150, Type I.

4. Hydrated Lime for Masonry Purposes: ASTM C 207, Type S.

5. Mortar for Unit Masonry: ASTM C 270.

B. The Contractor shall submit to the Engineer written evidence that the cement, lime and aggregate is in conformance with the material and mechanical requirements specified herein. Certified copies of independent laboratory test results or mill test results from the cement, lime and/or aggregate supplier may be considered evidence of compliance provided such tests are performed in accordance with the appropriate ASTM testing standards by experienced, competent personnel. In case of doubt as to the accuracy or adequacy of mill tests, the Engineer may require that the Contractor furnish test reports from an independent testing laboratory on samples of cement, lime and/or aggregate.

C. In addition to these submittals, the Contractor shall submit to the Engineer test results in compliance with ASTM C 270, Section 9 for each type of mortar to be used in the work. The test report shall also include the average compressive strength of three 2-inch cubes of laboratory prepared mortar. Mortar mix ingredients and proportions shall not be changed during the course of the work without the Engineer's approval.

Masonry Mortar 04 0513 -2 Extreme care shall be taken to assure that the same proportion of each ingredient is used in each batch. Mortar color shall be proportioned by weight in individual containers prior to mixing. Measuring mortar color by volume during mixing shall not be allowed.

D. If the unit strength method is chosen to verify masonry compressive strength compliance, the mortar strength shall be at least 1,900 psi (Type S) and 2,150 psi (Type N).

E. ACI-530.1 “Specification for Masonry Structures” is hereby incorporated by reference for testing and quality assurance requirements.

Part 2 Products

NOTE:

All references to vendors and "approved manufacturers" are included for description of quality and content of the designated equipment/materials. Equivalent items may be accepted if they meet all standards of quality and purpose for the intended use, as determined by City of Cumming.

2.01 Materials

A. Masonry Cement

1. Masonry cement shall be a mixture of Portland cement and Type S hydrated lime. The mix shall not contain inert or noncementitious mineral fillers. If package mix is used, other hydraulic cements may be substituted for a part of the Portland cement. However, the Portland cement shall not be less than 30 percent of the total. Packaged mixes shall conform to the requirements of ASTM C 91.

2. The composition of the masonry cement shall be printed on each bag in terms that show compliance with these requirements.

3. If a packaged mix is not used, the Portland cement shall conform to ASTM C 150, Portland Cement, Type I and hydrated lime shall conform to ASTM C 207, Type S. The hydrated lime may be used in dry or paste form.

B. Sand: Aggregate for use in masonry mortar shall be clean, free from salt or other deleterious materials and conform to ASTM C 144, Aggregate for Masonry Mortar.

C. Water: Water for mixing shall be potable, clean and free from oil, acids, salts and other deleterious matter.

Masonry Mortar 04 0513 -3 D. Color

1. Masonry cement used in load bearing and non-load bearing CMU wall construction shall be grey.

2. Masonry cement used in brick, exterior smooth face and split face CMU shall be colored. Colors shall be selected by the Engineer.

3. Where Masonry is required to match existing masonry, mortar color shall match cleaned existing mortar as close as possible.

E. Mortar in exterior smooth face and split face CMU shall have the additive “Dry Block”

as manufactured by W.R. Grace, or equal, and installed in accordance with manufacturer’s written instructions.
