INTRODUCTION

French is an international language which is spoken not only in Europe and North America, but also in some twenty African countries, many of which are strengthening their relations with South Africa. Proficiency in this language and knowledge of the culture and literatures of France and the Francophone countries can improve employment opportunities for graduates. Language tuition is provided for students with no prior knowledge of French, as well as for those who have already acquired different levels of proficiency. In addition to modules which offer tuition in language skills, including translation and French for business and professional purposes, the standard major in French also features modules which focus on the culture and literature of France and Francophone countries. Different curriculum combinations which allow for emphasis on either language or literary studies or other complementary fields of study are also possible.

French can be taken, as a major or ancilliary subject, not only by students in the Arts Faculty, but also by students in the Faculties of Economic and Management Sciences (see 5.2) and Theology. French may be taken as an ancilliary subject in the Faculties of Education, Law, and Science. French may also be taken for non-degree purposes up to and including third level and, under certain conditions, the modules taken may be converted into credits towards a degree.
