Chapter 14. Hardware Status
You canusetheHardwareStatustaskto viewmanagedsystem anddevice hardware statusfromthemanagement console.HardwareStatus notifiesyou whenevera managedsystemor devicehasahardware statuschangebydisplaying aniconinthelower-rightcornerof IBMDirector Console.HardwareStatus also adds thesystemordevice intheapplicablehardware-status groupwhenevera managed systemordevice generatesa hardwareevent.Ifasystem ordevice generateshardwareeventsfor morethanonegroup,thesystem ordeviceisadded to thegroupofthehighest-severityhardwareeventthatisgenerated.
Three hardware-statusgroupsaredisplayedintheGroupspane:
v HardwareStatusCritical v HardwareStatusInformation v HardwareStatusWarning
When youclickahardware-statusgroup, themanaged systemsordevicesthat have generatedthatseverityofa hardwareeventaredisplayedintheGroup Contentspane.Anicon isdisplayed nexttothemanaged systemordeviceinthe GroupContentspane.SeeFigure78for anexample.
Thesameiconisdisplayedinthebottom-rightportionof theIBMDirectorConsole interface,belowthetickertape,alongwiththenumberofmanagedsystemsand devicesthatareincludedinthathardware-statusgroup. Ifahardware-status group does notcontainanymanagedsystemsor devices,itsicon isunavailable.See Figure79foranexample.
You alsocandragamanaged systemor deviceontotheHardwareStatus taskin theIBMDirectorConsoleTaskspane.

Chapter 15. Inventory
You canusetheInventorytask tocollect dataaboutthehardwareandsoftwarethat iscurrently installedonthemanagedsystemsinyournetwork.IBMDirectorcollects inventorydatawhenamanaged systemisdiscoveredinitiallyandduringregular intervals,or youcanopttonotcollectinventoryuponinitialdiscoveryandinstead scheduleaninventorycollectionata moreconvenienttimeusingtheScheduler feature(see“Scheduler”onpage40formoreinformationonhow toschedule tasks).Thedefaultintervalfor refreshingthedatabaseisevery7days.Youcan change therefreshintervalandotherinventory-collectionparametersusingthe InventoryCollectionPreferencespage intheIBMDirectorConsole“Server
Preferences”window.Youalso cancollectinventorydataonamanagedsystem or group immediatelyor scheduleaninventorycollectionusingtheSchedulertask.
You canquerytheinventorydatabaseto displaydetails aboutpropertiesof a managed system,suchasremainingdiskspace.Youcanusea standardquerythat isprovided orcreateyour owncustomquery.
You canusetheinventory-softwaredictionarytotrack thesoftwarethatisinstalled onyourmanaged systems.You donotspecifydrivesor directoriesthatyouwant theInventorytaskto searchduringthesoftware-inventorycollection process;the software-dictionaryfilecontainspredefinedsoftwareprofilesthatrecognizemost standard softwarepackagesaftertheyareinstalled.Whenyouinstall software applicationsonservers,computers,or devices,theinventory-querybrowser displaysthenew softwareafterthenextinventorycollection.If youhaveinstalled softwarethatdoesnotcorrespondtoa predefinedsoftwareprofilethatisincluded withIBMDirector,youcan editthesoftware-dictionaryfileto updateyoursoftware inventory.Typically,this includessoftwarethatisdevelopedinternallyinyour organizationora newversionof softwarethatisreleasedafterthis versionofIBM Director.See“Viewingandeditingtheinventory-softwaredictionary”onpage170 for moreinformation.
