In the Playback screen you can play back the video to be recoded. The Playback screen is opened when you click the button on a preview image.
The video is played back in original resolution. If the resolution is bigger than the window, Nero Recode resizes the video to fit into the window and shows black bars.
For DVD-Video, the playback starts with the first main movie as default if several main mov-ies have been detected. For a video stream file with several videos, the playback starts with the first video titles. You can select another item from the title selection drop-down menu.

5.2 Crop
The enhancement tool Crop in the Playback screen allows you to crop your video. Crop is only available for recoding to video file.
The Crop feature is not available under Windows XP.
Nero Recode 57 Playback screen, Crop area The following options are available for the Crop enhancement:
Button Crop
Displays the area with setting options for cropping.
Cropping is useful if your video features black picture bars on the sides. To crop the video also decreases the size and as a result im-proves its quality.
Drop-down menu Mode
Disabled: Disables cropping.
Automatic: Detects black picture bars and removes them automati-cally. The aspect ratio of the source file is kept. The area to be cropped is indicated with a black transparent border.
Custom: Allows manual cropping. Just grap the sides of the crop area by mouse and drag it. Aspect ratio and Selection color are enabled.
Disabled is selected as a default.
Drop-down menu Aspect ratio
Same as source: Keeps the aspect ratio of the source.
None: Disables any aspect ratio restriction so that you can crop freely.
4:3 / 16:9 / 16:10 / 21:9: Chooses an aspect ratio which is kept even when you change the crop area manually.
Nero Recode 58 Drop-down menu
Selection color
Defines the color of the border being displayed to indicate the crop-ping area. You can choose between black and white.
This feature is useful to get a better contrast for the cropping frame.
Crop area textbo-xes
Displays the pixel size to be cropped. The boxes are updated auto-matically when you drag the crop area. You can also enter pixel val-ues manually here and the cropping area will change accordingly.
This works within the borders of the chosen aspect ratio.
Button Done
Closes the screen. Saves any made changes. The so-called non-destructive procedure is used for processing, i.e. the actual video is not changed, but flags are simply set that can be canceled at any time.
5.3 Trim
The enhancement tool Trim in the Playback screen allows you to trim your video.
Playback screen, Trim area The trim feature is activated beneath the preview (video) or peak wave display (audio). The trim feature allows you to add markers for start and end position of the area you want to keep. Simply drag and drop the pin from the beginning or end of the trim timeline onto the
Nero Recode 59 desired position. By clicking the little green triangle on the left or the right you can snap the pin to the playback marker. Start and end position of the area you want to keep and the du-ration can also be entered in the input fields in the Trim area.
Clicking the Done button closes the screen and saves any made changes. The so-called non-destructive procedure is used for processing, i.e. the actual video is not changed, but flags are simply set, so you can come back at any time as long as the job is not finished and change the made settings.
Note, that you can only trim the video at its start and end. If you want to cut un-wanted scenes or remove advertising sequences from the middle of the video, we recommend using the Cutter feature in Nero Video. Do not forget to save chang-es to a new video file.
More information about Nero Video can be found in the Nero Video manual.
Note, that you can only trim the audio at its start and end. If you want to remove sequences from the middle of the audio, we recommend using Nero WaveEditor.
Nero WaveEditor is not installed automatically with Nero 12. However, it can be downloaded for free from the Download section at www.nero.com or via Nero ControlCenter and used together with Nero 12. You will find further information in the Nero WaveEditor manual.
