Recreating Volume Groups, Logical Volumes, and Filesystems

Ifyouexperienceahardwarefailurethatrequiresyoutorecreatea volumegroup, logicalvolume,orfilesystem,youcanuseeitherthesystemorvolume group backup.Afilesystembackupcanalsobe usedtorecreatefilesystems whilea logicalvolume backupcanbeusedtorecreatelogicalvolumes.These“containers”

must berecreatedtoprovidea placetorestorethedata.

Youcanrecreateoneormorevolume groups,logicalvolumesorfilesystems as they aredefinedonthebackup, oryoucanoptionallychangethevolumegroup, logicalvolume orfilesystemcharacteristics,includingthedisklocation,filesystem and logicalvolume sizes,oranyotherattribute.

Note: Thecontainersyouwanttorecreatemust haveinformationpertainingto themonthebackupmedia.Avolumegroupbackupofonlythevg00 volumegroupcannotbeusedtorecreateanyothervolume group.However, thisbackupcanbeusedtorecreatesinglelogicalvolumesorfilesystems that werecontained withinvolume groupvg00.Thesystembackup, however, alwayscontains informationaboutall volumegroups,logicalvolumes,and filesystems,evenifnotallvolumegroupdatawas includedonthebackup.

Youdo nothavetousethebackupmediatorecreatea volumegroup,logical volume orfilesystemonthesamesystem.Youcanusethemedia toperformthe recreationonanothersystem,therebycopyinganenvironmentfromonesystemto another.

Note: Bydefault,thisoption recreatesthevolumegroup,logicalvolume, and filesystemstructuresbutdoesnotrestorethedataintothem.Youmay optionallychoosetorestorethedatawiththisoption,oryoumayusethe RestoreData froma Backupoptionseparately.

Torecreateoneormorevolume groups,logicalvolumes,orfilesystems:

1. Atacommandline,type smit.

2. From theSMITmenu,selectIBMTivoliStorageManagerforSystemBackup andRecovery.

3. Select Backup&Recovery Options.

4. Select RecreateVolumeGroups,LogicalVolumesorFilesystems.

Note: From a commandline,type smitsb_create.

5. On theDeviceSelectorscreen, highlightthedeviceyouwanttouseandpress Enter.

6. Ifyouselectedatapedriveorvirtualdevice,enterthebackupsequence number.Thedefaultvalue is“1”,indicatingthatyouwanttousethefirst backuponthemedia.Ifyou“stacked”multiple sequentialbackupsonthe media, andwanttousetheinformationfromadifferentbackup,enterthe backupnumberand pressEnter.

IfyouselectedaTSMvirtual device,selecttheTSMBackupIDfromthelistof backups onthenext selectorscreen.

7. Ifthebackupisasystemorvolume groupbackup,selectthetypeofbackup youaregoingtorecreate.Youhavetwooptions:

Volume Group (all LVs and filesystems) Logical Volume and/or Filesystem

Highlight thetypeofbackupyouare creatingandpressEnter.

IfthebackupisaFilesystem orLogicalVolumeBackup,therecreatetypeis assumedtobe “LogicalVolumeand/orFilesystem.”

8. Depending onyour responsetothepreviousprompt,selectfromthe displayed listeitheravolume grouporlogicalvolumetocreate.Toselecta single option,highlighttheoptionand pressEnter. Toselectmultipleoptions, highlighteachoptionand pressF7toselect.Whenyouhavemadeall

selections,pressEntertocontinue.

9. Oneofthefollowingscreensisdisplayed.Thesescreensareexamples ofthe screensthatare displayedwhenyourecreateeither asinglevolume groupor twologicalvolumesfroma tapedevice:

Theserverhostnameifa serveroptionwasselectedontheprior deviceselectorscreen.Youcannotchangethis field.

Device orfilename

Thedeviceordisk imagefilenamepreviouslyselected.Youcannot changethis fieldonthisscreen.

TSM BackupID

Thisoptionwillonlybe displayedwhentheDeviceorfile nameisa TSM virtualdevice.Thevalueforthisfieldispropagatedfroma previous inputscreenandmaynotbe changed.

Note: Specifythelogicalvolumenamein theform of“lvname”and not“/dev/lvname”.

Ifyouarerecreatingoneormorelogicalvolumes, enteringavalue in this fieldindicatesthatthelogicalvolumestobecreatedwillbe placedinthespecifiedvolumegroup.Inthiscase, thevolume group nameyouentermust beanactivevolume grouponthesystem.

New LogicalVolumeName

Default=(blank/none). Ifyouarerecreatinga logicalvolume, youcan entera newlogicalvolumenameinthisfield.Thisisparticularly usefulif youwanttorecreatea logicalvolumebuttheoriginallogical volume bythesamenamestillexistsonthesystem.Youcannotenter a valueinthis fieldifyouare creatingmorethanonelogicalvolume at onetime.

Ifyouarerecreatingoneormorelogicalvolumes, enteringavalue in this fieldindicatesthatthelogicalvolumestobecreatedwillbe placedinthespecifiedvolumegroup.Inthiscase, thevolume group nameyouentermust beanactivevolume grouponthesystem.

Restorefilesystempermissions?

Default=Np.Specify“yes”tothisoption ifyouwouldlikethe permissionsofthis filesystem restoredfromthebackupduring the process torecreatethestructure.

LogicalVolume(s)tocreate

Thisfieldisdisplayedonlywhenselectingtorecreatelogicalvolumes and filesystems.Thisfieldwillcontainthenamesofthelogical volumesselectedonthepriorselectionscreen.Youcanchangethe logicalvolumestocreatebyaddingor removingentriesfromthislist, separatingeachentrybyaspace.

Althoughonlythelogicalvolume nameisindicatedhere,ifthelogical volume containsafilesystem,thefilesystemwillberecreated.

Notethatinformationregardingthelogicalvolumestorecreatemust be containedonthebackupmedia previouslyselected.

Volume Group(s)tocreate

Thisfieldisdisplayedonlywhen selectingtorecreatevolume groups.

Thisfieldwillcontainthenamesofthevolumegroupsselectedonthe prior selectionscreen. Youcanchangethevolumegroupstocreateby adding orremovingentriesfromthislist,separatingeachentrybya space. Notethatinformationregardingthevolumegroupstorecreate must becontainedonthebackupmediapreviouslyselected.

10. Whenyouhavemadeall selections,pressEntertobegin.

The mediaisreadtoobtaintheinformationonthevolume groups,logicalvolumes or filesystemsselected.

Ifyouselectedtoeditthevolume group,logicalvolumeor filesysteminformation, a screensimilartothefollowingisdisplayed:

The optionsforvolume groupsarenotdisplayedwhenyouselectto recreate logicalvolumes.Also,if thisisapowerbackup,theoptionforchanging filesystem informationisnotdisplayed.Thesemenus provideoptionsforchanging virtually all attributesforvolumegroups,logicalvolumes, andfilesystems.Thisprocessis identical toreinstallinga systemfromasystem backup.Inbothcases,thedetailed stepsforchangingthis informationisprovidedinChapter11,“Changingthe Volume Group,LogicalVolumeandFilesystemAttributes,”onpage11-1.

The volumegroup,logicalvolume, andfilesystemsare thencheckedtoensurethat they canbe recreatedbasedonthecurrentsystemresourcesavailable.Ifthereare inconsistencies,suchasnotenoughdisk spaceorunassignedphysicalvolumes (disks), theappropriatemessages aredisplayedand youmust changethevolume group orlogicalvolume informationbeforetheprocesscancontinue.
