Abstract
The
purposeofthis
study is
to
develop
atraining
modulefor
integrating
text,
artwork,
andgraphics
into
apagelayout
program.Currently,
the
information for
successfulintegration
must
be
referencedfrom
several sources.By having
the
key
elements ofintegration
in
onevolume,
usersattempting
to
layout
and/ordesign
a publicationusing
these
programs willbe
ableto
proceedquickly
withfewer
technical
problems.Rapid
growthis
predictedfor
computer-basedtools
in
graphicdesign
studios,
advertising
agencies,
andmagazineswhichnormally
use computerdesign
stations.These
computer
design
stations require propertraining
to
be
usedcost effectively.Consequently,
training
is
important
for firms
investing
in
them.
For
the types
of publications producedby
graphicdesign
studios,
advertising
agencies,
andmagazines,
training
is
recommendedby
the
authorin
the
following
five
areas: word
processing, artwork, graphics,
pagelayout,
andintegration
of programs.The
manuals available
for
the
individual
programs werefound
to
be
adequate exceptin
the
areaof
integration. The information
wasspread out over several manuals andtended to
assumemore
than
entry level knowledge
of computer vocabulary.The
goal ofthis
projectis
to
bring
the
integration information
together
into
oneresource.
Each
stageofintegration
willbe
explainedfor
a user whois
notcomputerliterate. It
is necessary
to
specify
programsfor
the
integration
training
module sincedifferent
programshave
different
requirementsfor integration. Programs
were selectedbased
onpopularity,
extensiveuse,
andtechnical
competencein
the
graphicartsindustry.
This
projectis
comprised oftwo
components.The
first
and major phase ofthe
project
is
the experimentation, research,
andwriting
ofthe
integration
training
module.The final
product willbe
anintegration
training
modulein
the
form
of areference manual.Research
andexperimentationwilldetermine
the
specificcontents andinstructions for

second componentis
the
evaluation andsubsequent revisions.A
panel ofjudges
willbe
askedto
usethe
integration
training
module.The
judges

moduleby

the

quickreferenceguide,

integration
training
module,
will aid
in visualizing
the

Quick Reference Guide illustrates
the
layout for
a pieceto

the

matterfrom
aMacWrite

and artworkfrom Adobe Illustrator.

DAVIS REVIEW
anticipatesthat
withinthe
nexttwo years,
enough studios and agencieswill
be using
electronic equipmentthat
the
remainder willquickly do
the
same.1Desktop
capabilitieshave
reacheda point of sophistication where pagelayout
programscan
be linked
to
high
end prepress systems.2 This
reducesthe
amount of workthat
is
sentto traditional
servicebureaus for
typesetting,
andto
prepresshouses for
separation, cropping,
mediaplacement, stripping,
and scaling.Keeping
this
workin-house
can representconsiderablecost savings andfaster
turn
aroundtime
for design
studios and
advertising
agencies.-^The
economics ofincorporating
electronicdesign
tools
canbe compelling for
the
reasonslisted
above.These
computerdesign
stations require extensivetraining
of personnel.If
propertraining
is
notincluded
withthe equipment,
it is
possiblethe
equipment willstandidle
while work
is
resumedin
the traditional
manner.It
is
not cost effectiveto
have
graphicdesigners utilizing
typesetting
servicebureaus
anddoing
mechanical paste-upsto
makepage
layouts camera-ready
whenthe
investment in
the
electronictools
has been
made.Consequently, training
is important for firms
investing
in
computerdesign
stations.->For
the types
of publications producedby
graphicdesign
studios,
advertising
agencies,
andmagazines,
training
in five different

recommendedby
the

This integration
training
module willbe
the
modulein
this
proposal.The
software manualsand/ortutorials that
are availablefor
the
individual
programs(Areas 1
through
4),
arepackagedby
the
softwaremanufacturers as reference andtraining
tools.
When using
these tools the
authorfound
them to
be
adequatefor
mostsituations.
It
wasnotconfusing
to
gothrough
one program onthe
Macintosh,
using its
accompaning
reference manual.However,
this
userfound
progresshalted many
times
whenattempting
to
integrate
files,
particularily files
involving
scannedimages.
During
the
course of several projects avariety
ofimage
types
neededto
be imported into
a pagelayout
program.Some
ofthe
problems encountered were:
imported images became fragmented
and reassembledhaphazardly,
line detail in
graphs wasbroken
up,
artworkdisappeared,
andfiles
to
be
imported
could notbe
opened.To
troubleshoot
these
situations wasfrustrating. The information
wasspread outover several
manuals,
making it
confusing
andaccessibility difficult. In
addition,
the
programmanuals
tend to
assume morethan
entry level knowledge
of computervocabulary
whendiscussing
importation. The
solutionsto the
problemsthis
authorencounteredwere not always successful.
Results
wereusually
obtainedby
trial
and error.By having
the
key
elements ofintegration
in
onevolume,
usersattempting
to
layout
and/or
design
a publicationusing
these
programs willbe
ableto
proceedquickerwithless frustration. Each
stageofintegration
willbe
explainedfor
a user whois
notparticularily
computerliterate. Since files may
originate at othersources, this
will aidthe
graphic
designer
or artdirector
in specifying
the
formats
that
arecompatible withtheir

the
prominent positionin
pagelayout
programs ofthe
majorprograms
considered,
suchasReady, Set,
Go!
andPageMaker because
ofits
precisionand extensive user-defined
typesetting
capabilities.An
expanded versionis
alsocapableof
linking
to
high-end
resolution(Scitex)
through
aproprietary format
calledVisionary."Adobe Illustrator
Although many draw
and paint programs areavailable,
Adobe
Illustrator
was chosenbecause
ofits popularity in design
studios,
longevity
in
the
marketplace,
andits relatively
powerfulfunctions
and accuracy.'MC View
This
programis
availablefor
usein
the
Goudy
laboratory. It
enablesthe
user
to
scan avariety
ofblack
and whiteimages for editing using
the
AGFA Focus
flatbed
scanner.Images
may be imported into
Adobe
Illustrator
to
be
used astemplates
for
artwork,
ordirectly
into QuarkXpress
as completedimages. This integration
training
module addresses
the
importation
into QuarkXpress.
MacWrite
MacWrite
has been
selectedfor
the
wordprocessing
programbecause
of
its
widespreaduse,
easeofuse,
andpopularity.Audience
ofthe
Study
This
projectis
primarily
targeted towards
graphicdesigners
whoneedto
learn how
to
usethese
newtools
in
a minimum amount oftime.
Other
personswho wouldbe
likely
to

and occasional users of
the
equipment,
such astemporary
and parttime
employees.The
module's useis
initially
restrictedto
facilities
utilizing
the
programs andequipment selected
for
this
project.In
particular,
users ofthe
Macintosh
networkin
the
School
ofPrinting
Management
andSciences'Goudy Laboratory
willfind
this
module ahelpful
resource.Although
this
moduleis
specificin its
program andselection,
the
format is
suchthat
information
for
othersoftware programsmay be
substitutedto
accommodate variouscombinationsofprograms.
Therefore it is
possibleto
expandits
useby
creating
revisededitions,
with more research and experimentation.The
revised editions wouldbe
technically
specificfor
otherprograming
needsbut
much ofthe
information
wouldremainconstant.
Reasons
for
Student
Interest
Electronic publishing has brought design
andproduction,
oncetreated
as separateentities,
closertogether.
This
technology
is eliminating many
manual steps ofthe
publishing
process and will continue astechnology
becomes
moreadvanced.^Currently
these
electronictools
offer prepress production capabilitiesfor
design,
but do
not yethave
the technical
capabilitiesin
colorto
be feasible for full
color print production.However,
asthe
technology improves,
the
colorlimitations
ofdesktop
tools
willdecrease,
eventually
allowing
acceptabledesign
andfull
color productionservices.^The
researchandwriting
ofthis
training
module willbe
ofbenefit
by
expanding
the
author's
knowledge
ofthe
links, limitations,
and possibilitiesin
the
current software andequipment.

Assumptions
Since
the
purpose ofthis
moduleis
to

importing
text,
artwork,

files

a pagelayout
program,
usersdo
not need extensiveknowledge
ofthe
imported
programs.Often
files
originateelsewhere,
createdby
other sources.Minimally,
the
graphicdesigner only
needsto
import
these
files into
the
pagelayout
program.Therefore,
assumptionshave been
madeoflevels
ofMacintosh
literacy
and programcompetence
in
orderto
focus
only
onthe
integration
aspect ofthe
training
program.The
authorassumesthe
userhas
enoughknowledge
ofMacintosh
to
recognizeapplications, windows,
andmenus.Basic knowledge
ofMacintosh
programs shouldinclude
opening, saving,
andclosing files.
A
more extensiveknowledge
ofQuarkXpress is
required.Requirements include
the
basic Macintosh functions listed
above,
understanding
of pagesetup,
the
QuarkXpress
toolbox,
text
boxes
andlinking
oftext
boxes,
and pictureboxes.

determine if
the

background knowledge before proceeding

integration

Module
Once
the
training
moduleis
completed,
a panel offive judges

instructions

judges
willbe
selectedfrom
studentsin
the
School
ofPrinting
Management
andSciences
andgraduate students
in
the
College
ofFine
andApplied Arts. These judges
willhave
the
basic knowledge
requiredto
usethe
module(ascertained
by
the
userknowledge
questionnaire),
but
willnotbe particularily Macintosh literate.
After using
the
integration
training
moduleto
integrate
files,
the
judges
willevaluatethe
moduleby
completing
a questionnairedesigned
to
evaluatethe
modulefor
accuracy,
clarity,
ease ofuse,
and usefulness(Figure
4,
pages15-17).

beginning
of each chapterthat

program.Two
ofthe
charts also needed clarification.Organization
The
organization ofthe
module was aparticularily
successful attribute.Each
chapterdiscusses
adifferent
type
offile
orimage
to
be
imported. Each
chapteris designed
to
stand onits
own so usersdo
not needto
accessinformation from
other chapters.Although
this
format
causes some materialto
be
repetitive,
usersdo
not needto
readthe
modulefrom
beginning
to
endin
orderto
import
aspecifictype
ofimage. User #1
stated,
"The
repetitiveness also allows each section
to
be
a manual onits
own.Therefore,
one sectiondoes
nothave
to
be
completedbefore
another."
Each
chapteris divided into distinct
sections.A summary
ofthe
saveformats,
"How
To
Save,"is
first,
followed
by
the
"How
To
Import."The
moretechnical
information,
explaining
the
processes andformats,
is
containedin "Hints: What Has
Happened."A
troubleshooting
section, "Hints:
What
To Look
For,"

appreciated
that
they

modulevery quickly
by
using
the

To"
sections.
This
is
suitedfor
the
user whohas
nointerest
ortime to

userswanting
amoretechnical
understanding had
that
information
available
to
them.
User #2
states,
"The basics
camefirst
and moretechnical
information
followed for
the
userto
readif
needed.Therefore
allnecessary information
waslocated
atthe
startofeach chapter.This
organization madeit extremely
simplefor

find
the

neededandnot getbogged down in
technical
details. I
readthose
aftercompleting
the
exercise."Question 3
was not ratedby
User #4. However User #4
suggestedthat the
chapteron
importing
halftone
charts,
graphs,
anddiagrams follow line
art,
sincethe
procedurerecommends
using line
art methods.Since
the
originalimage is
a specifictype
ofhalftone,
the
chapter remainsin its initial
location,
following
the
chapterfor
importing
halftones.
Effectiveness
Questions 4
and5
elicited responses onthe
usefulness ofthe
module.Out
often
possibleresponses,
one wasneutral,
four
werebetter
than
average,
andfive
were excellent.User #4
was neutral about
the
usefulnessofthis
particular module(question
4)
because he
wasfairly
proficientin using
the
programs and equipmentbefore reading
this
module.However
he felt
a customized versionfor
specific work situations(question
5)
was an excellentidea.
Training
time
The
training
time
for
allofthe
users wasvirtually
identical,
regardless ofthe
users'backgrounds
and previousexperience.This
supportsthe
responsesthat
the
instructions
areaccurate and clear.
Since
the
beginners
wereableto
completethe
identical
setofexercisesin
the
sametime
frame
asthe
more experiencedusers,
it indicates
that time
wasnotlost
by

module wasdesigned

simplify customizing for
specificprogramsand scanners.
By dividing
the
chaptersinto
sections as explained underOrganization (page
19)
muchinformation
canbe
retained withvirtually
nochanges.Required
changeswouldbe found primarily in
specific sections.The "How To
Import"and"How To
Save"information is
separatefrom
the
technical
information.
Many
ofthe
changesnecesary
whenchanging
programs wouldbe
restricted
to the
"How
To"sections.
Most
ofthe technical
information in
the
"Hints: What Has
Happened" sections areconceptual and
deal
with standard saveformats
andtheir
attributes.This
information
willnot change
from
programto
program.Many
ofthe
troubleshooting
problemsfound in "Hints: What To Look
For" wouldremainconstant
because
ofthe
characteristics ofthe
saveformat
selected,
especially if
the
page
layout
program remainedthe
same.However if
the
pagelayout
programis
changed,
then
someofthe
information
would remainconstant,
but
other examples would needto
be
altered
to
suitthe
specific selected programs.The basic
skeletonis
a good onejudging
from
the
user responses.It is

Levels
of Expertise
Five
students wereselectedto
completeaseries ofexercisesusing
the
instructions in
the
moduleand
then to
answerthe
questionnaire.Two
ofthe
five
users(Users #1
and#5)
had
no previous experience
working
withQuarkXpress
orthe
Agfa
scanner,
but
had
workedwith otherprograms at a
beginner level. The
otherthree
usershad
someworking
knowledge
ofQuarkXpress
andthe
Agfa
scanner.Users #2
and#5,
the
most experiencedandthe
least
experienceusers,
gavethe
module
the
highest
ratings.Both
madevery
positive comments aboutthe
organization ofthe
module.The
organization wasthe
key
factor
that
madethe
module work wellfor
them.
The basics
ofscanning
andimporting
arerelatively
simple.The
aim ofthe
module wasto
clarify
the
bewildering
array
of choices and offerbasic
technical
information
withoutexceeding
the
userslevels. In
this
regardthe
module was a successfor User
#3,
whoappreciated
having
the
basic
technology
explained.However
both Users #3
and#4
wouldhave liked
moredepth
to the technical
information.
Suggestions
for
Improving
The Integration
Training
Module
The language
andliberal
use of graphics areintended
to
guide non-sophisticated usersthrough the
integration
process.Although
technical
information is included for
the
user whowishes
to
expandhis knowledge beyond
the
basics
of"How
To",
it may
notbe
enoughfor
a more accomplished user or a user who wants a
quantity
oftechnical
information. The
technical
information
providedin
the
moduleis
writtenfor
the
understanding
of nontechnical
users.The
moduleis
simplisticfor
users whohave
progressedbeyond
the
beginner
stage.
To
appealto
a wider audiencethe technical
information
couldbe
expandedfurther.
The
more advanced users suggestedthat
information
onoptimizing
scanning
be
included. This
module explainsthe
basics
ofthe
scanning
process andthe
basic
choicesusers must make when
in
the
scanning
program.The
inclusion
ofhints
onhow
to
getthe

Problems Encountered
The
originalplan ofthe
author wasto
recommenda save optionfor
eachtype
ofimage
andto
illustrate
how
to
import
these
images
into Quark.
However,
it became
evidentthat
the
selection of asave
format
was notthe
only
crucial choice whenpreparing
afile for
importion.
The
saveformat
selectionsofferedto the
user aredependent
uponthe
scanoutputoptionselectedprior
to
scanning.To
selectthe
properscan output a number ofvariablesmust
be
taken
into
considerationfirst. The
user should considerthe
resolution ofthe
outputdevice,
whether or notviewing
the
image
onthe
monitoris
necessary,
whetheror not
the
ability
to
modify
the
image
afterit is
savedis
necessary,
and whether or notthe
ability
to
modify it
afterit is imported is
necessary.Therefore,
the
scanning
process andits
options played a much
larger
partin
the
development
ofthis
modulethan
originally
anticipated.
The
author made a concerted effortto
discuss only
the
crucial choicesthat
affectedthe
saveformats
andimportation in
orderto
keep
the
moduletrue to
its
original purposeand not
to
overwhelmthe target
audience.The scanning
programoffersmany
options andtools
notdiscussed in detail in
this
module.How
to
getthe
optimum scanbecomes
the

CONCLUSIONS
Conclusions
The
Integration
Training
Module is
suitabletraining
tool
for its
target
audience attwo
levels. Beginners found
the
moduleeasy
to
read andunderstand,
and appreciatedthe
organization
that
separatedthe
technical
information
from
the
instructions
onscanning,
saving,
andimporting.
Some
users will not wantto
progressbeyond
the
basics
ofaccomplishing
the
"How
To"instructions.
Others
willeventually desire
the
more advancedand
technical
information
that
is
available.By
segregating
the
instructions
andtechnical
information
the
moduleappealsto
both
types
of users.The
modulehas
possibilitiesfor
being
customizedfor
specific work situations.It
could
be
revisedto
display
instructions for
other major pagelayout
programs and/or otherscannerswith
their
accompanying
software.Many
usersonly
wantto
getin
andout of asystem quickly.
Customizing
this
module would allowthose
usersto
accomplishtheir
work
quickly
with no guesswork.This
module couldbe
used as a prototypefor producing
a series of
training
modulesto
accompany
pagelayout
software or scanner software.Value
ofthe
Project
The Integration
Training
Module
is
a goodtraining
andself-teaching
tool.
The
instructions
to
import
into QuarkXpress
areeasy
to
learn. The
real value ofthe
moduleis
the
pulling
together
ofthe technical
information
that
explains whathas happened in
the
scanning
program,
whathas happened
during
the
import
to the
pagelayout
program,
andhow
these
elements work
together.
Information
aboutthe
scanning
program,
pagelayout
program,
the
attributes of
the
scanoutputs,
andthe
attributes ofthe
saveformats
whichhad been
dispursed among
varioustraining
manuals and periodicalsis
nowlocated in
onevolume.27
software andequipment specific
to
that
facility.
Many
changesin
the
software willoccurin
the
future, however,
much ofthe
moduleis
conceptualinformation explaining
the
scanning
process andthe
nature ofthe
saveformats.
This
type
ofinformation
should not changein
the
immediate future.
Therefore,
although specific
instructional information
will change with each softwarerevision, the
basic
technical
information
willbe
of valuebeyond
those
changes.Recommendations
for Future
Projects
The logical
nextstep for study
wouldbe
experimentationin how
to
optimize scanning.The
author
found
that the
basics
ofscanning
neededto
be included in
this
module.However,
experimentation and
information
onhow
to
getthe
optimum scan wasreally
anothersubject
in itself. In
addition,
two
ofthe
moreadvanced users ofthis
module requested moreinformation
onthis
subject.A study experimenting
