Speaking
from
experience,
it
wouldbe
easierto
remember importantdetails from
the workshop
whenthe
travel
routeis identical
to the primary
organizational structurewithin
the
guidebook.Other
possible waysto
organizethe information
were not aslogical.
Clustering
the
interest pointsby
location
wasnot as appropriate.A
large
amount oftime
would needto
be
spentto
clusterthe
interest
points
by
their
location.
And,
ifthe primary
organizational method wasby
alphabet,
the
students wouldnotbecome
asfamiliar
withthe
routeof
the
workshop.In
the
existing
guidebooks, the
leading
organizational method wasalso
by
time.
Within
eachstate, the
information
wasorganizedby
time
aswell.This
information
wouldjump
from
pageto
pagein
the
existing
guidebooks,
making
it difficult
to
locate
specificinformation.
New category
labels (Craft
Stores &
Museums,
Landscapes, State &
National
Parks,
andVillages
& Towns)
werecreated
for
the
redesigned guidebooksothat
information
can
be located
effortlessly.In
the
redesignedguidebook, the
information withineachcategory
is
listed
alphabetically,
notby
location.
Each
nightthe
studentsareexpected
to
plantheir
activitiesand routefor the
following
day.
Students
should askthemselves
whatinterestpointsthey
wantto
observe orhow
the
following day
canbe
spent.This
processfamiliarizes
the
studentswith specific regionsofthe
Southwest

The
redesigned guidebook isintended
to
be
used as a resourceduring
the
workshop.It is
the
student'sresponsibility
to
discover
which
town
or village a particularlandscape
or monumentislocated
within.If
a certain monument is overanhour
from the
campsite it would
be logical
to
find
other monumentsnearby
sothat
time
is spentwisely.By looking
onthe maps,
a studentmay
find
an interest point(that
couldbe
worthexploring) that
isnothighlighted
inthe guidebook,
but
wouldbe
interesting
to
photograph.
Students
may
explore placesthat the workshop
coordinator is unaware of.
This
isone reasonthe
existing
mapswere
left
basically
uneditedand were not redrawnto
be
moreparticular
to
afixed
set offocal
points.A
certain interestpointhighlighted
inthe
guidebookmay
lead
to
severalother
interesting
areas not notedin
the
guidebook.New
discoveries
may
become
possible additionsthat
willenrichthe
workshop
for
the
following

is a consistent planfor

size and placementfor
eachtype
of visual element when used inthe
grid structure ofthe
redesigned guidebook.
Photographs
rangeinsize and positionthroughout

verticalcolumns and are always placedin
the
top
portion ofthe
grid.
This decision is
usedconsistently
throughout the
entireredesigned guidebook.
There
is a consistent planfor
the
placementofthe
mapsthroughout
the

maps are always placed atthe
top
left
side of a page.The
maps eithertake up
four, five,

horizontally

the
redesigned guidebookisclearly labeled.
Experimentation
with variouslabels
canbe found
in Appendix 5.
These labels
display
the
location
of a map.The
most appropriatetype
oflabel is
oftwelve
pointwidth,
displaying
the
location
ofthe
map.Evaluation
The ideation
process was crucialinthe
evaluation stage ofthe
thesis
project.From
the
ideation
work, the
most appropriatedecisions
were chosen
for
the
redesigned guidebook.These final decisions
arelocated
inthe
new redesigned guidebookin
Appendix 8.
Appropriate Visual Elements

most usefultype
of rulefor
this
project was ofhairline
width,

this type

ruleswere explored as
well,
althoughahorizontal
rule wasa cleanerdecision.
Sufficient
spaceis
providedto
the
right side of each pagefor
the
appropriate
labels.
Limited
space was available onthe
top
andbottom
of each page
because
several mapsareverticalin format.
The
most usefultype
ofmap
label
was oftwelve
pointwidthThis
heavy
rule,
found
inAppendix
5,
islocated
atthe
bottom
of eachmap
with reversed whitetype
(revealing
the
location
ofthe
map).A
heavy
black
rule is aclean andfunctional
decision.
The
reversedwhite
type
islegible
and noticeable.Other
variations wereexploredbut
were not as appropriate.
The
heavy
rule islocated
atthe
bottom
ofeach
map, therefore this
rule isnotdistracting
to the
heading
that
occurs on
even/
other page.Paper

Colored
paper was addedto

redesigned guidebookto

Southwest. The
grain withinthe
papers are characteristicofthe

Implementation
The
thesis
project wasfurther
refined,
developed,
and arrangedto
itsfinal form
afterthe
evaluation stage.The feedback
from
allcommittee members was
taken
into considerationwhenpreparing
the
final draft
ofthe
redesigned guidebook.The
new redesigned guidebook was output on photographicpaper
from
anImagesetter.
From
this
final
draft, twenty
copieswere reproduced on a
copy
machine.Each copy
wasbound
witha comb
bind.
This
type
ofbinding
allowseasy insertion
and removalof pages so
that
changes are notdifficult
to
make.The
redesigned guidebookswillbe
distributed to
the
participantsof
the
1998
Southwest
Photography
Workshop.
These
guidebookswill
be
usedthroughout
this
workshop
andfuture
workshops.The
suggestionsfrom future
participantsmay
be
usedin
future
versions ofthe
redesigned guidebook.The
redesignedguidebook
has
been
saved ondisk for Ken
White,
to
facilitate
future
revisions and/
oradditionsthat
wouldimprovethe
workshop
experience.Dissemination
The
redesigned guidebooks willbe distributed
to
participantsof
the
1998
Southwest
Photography
Workshop,
two
weeks priorto
itsdeparture. The
students are expectedto
readthe preliminary
material
before
arriving in
Albuquerque,
New
Mexico. The
workshop
begins
onJune
2,
inAlbuquerque,
New
Mexico. The
redesignedguidebookwill
be
needed upondeparture from Albuquerque
inorderto travel to the
first
campsite.The
redesigned guidebookswillbe
usedthroughout the
workshop.The
mapswillbe
utilizedfor
travel
andthe
information
willbe
a resourcefor
eachlocation.
These
guidebookswill
be
used whiletraveling,
exploring,
andlearning
aboutthe
Four
Corners
region.Future
versions ofthe
redesigned guidebookmay be
refined orchanged.
Images may
be
replacedby
future
students andinformation
may
be
added or revised.Beyond
the
workshop,
the
participants willbe
ableto
usethe
redesigned guidebookas a resourcefor
independentresearchand
travel
aswell as a personal memoir ofthe
Southwest
Photography
Workshop.
Retrospective Evaluation
Two
types
ofevaluation were conductedto
evaluatethe
entireproject.
Two
evaluationquestionnaires
were createdfor the
evaluation of
the
redesigned
guidebook.The
secondtype
ofevaluation entailed
the
feedback from
eachthesis
committeemember on
the thesis exhibition,
documentation,
ideation,
andcontent of
the
evaluation questionnaire.The feedback from
the
evaluation
questionnaires
andfrom
eachthesis
committeemember was
helpful
and wasfollowed
by
further
refinements.Evaluation Questionnaires
Two
evaluation questionnaires were createdfor
the
evaluationofthe
redesigned guidebook.One
questionnaire was madefor
the
1997
Workshop
participants and a separate questionnaire wasprepared
for future
participants ofthe
workshop.The
questionnairefor
the
1997 participants,
located
inAppendix
6,
involves
the
comparison ofthe
existing
guidebookswiththe
redesigned guidebook.
As
these
participantshave
actually
usedthe
existing
guidebooks,
they
wouldbe
the
most appropriate peopleto
evaluate
the
effectiveness ofthe
redesigned guidebook.Seven
participants attendedthe
1997
Workshop. The
questionnaireswere
distributed
to these individuals.
Each
ofthe
seven participantscompleted
the
questionnairewithboth
the
existing
guidebooks andthe
redesignedguidebook,
availablefor
reference when needed.Committee Feedback
Feedback
wasgivenby
eachthesis
member onthe
evaluationquestionnaire, thesis exhibition,
documentation, ideation,
andthe
evaluation questionnaire.
Further
refinement wasnecessary
onthe
evaluation questionnaire.
For
example,
someworkonthe
language
in
the
evaluation plan was necessary.Many
graphicdesign terms
that
adesigner
is accustomedto may
be
unfamiliarto
many
participants.The
true test
ofthe
redesigned guidebookwillbe
using
it
during
the
workshop.Analyzing
comments and suggestionsfrom
the
1998
evaluation questionnairewillbe
very
helpful. Future
participantsmay
comment ondetails
not mentionedin the
evaluation plan.This
questionnaire
is located
in Appendix 7.
The feedback from
this
questionnaire will
be
taken
into
consideration whenfurther
evaluating
and
refining
the
redesigned guidebooks.The
1998
evaluation questionnaireswill
be
used againfollowing
the
1998
Southwest
Photography
Workshop.
Conclusion
The direct
experience
from attending
the
Southwest
Photography
Workshop
in
1995
and1997
andusing the
existing
guidebooks
extensively
was an advantagethroughout the
entirethesis
project.The strong
identification withthe
workshop has
allowedthe
refinement and addition of
existing
material.Working
withKen
White,
the workshop
coordinator andclient,
has
been
animportant
partof
this thesis
project as well.His
ten
years of experienceteaching
the
Southwest
Photography Workshop
was aninvaluable
resource.His
advicehas
provento
be extremely
helpful
and responsiveto the
needs of
the
workshop
and itsparticipants.The
imagery throughout the
redesigned guidebook isfrom
the
1997
workshop
participants.These
images
showthe
diversity
and abundanceof inspiration availablein
the
Southwest. The images
usedare intendedto demonstrate
the
creativity
of past participants andto
inspirefuture
participants.
One
ofthe
mostgratifying
parts ofthis
projecthas
been
to
actually
incorporatethese
imagesinto
the
guidebookdesign.
The
evaluationstage washelpful
inassessing
the
success ofthis
project
From
the
feedback
receivedinthe
evaluationquestionnaires,
aswell as
direct
personalexperience withthe
existing
guidebooks,
the
redesignedguidebookis
astrong improvement from
the existing
guidebooks.
