way I

a goodside and a
bad
side.No
matterhow
good a personis,
thereis
always an evil side
lurking
in
theback
of their mind.Not every
person acts upon this evil side.
For
somepeople,
this evil sidejust
takes over.For
some othersit
is
brought
outby
some other act.In
thisinstance,
a normal manis
recruited to go to war.A
gunis
putin
his
hands
andhe
is
forced
tokill.
Gradually
his
evilside overtakes
his
good side and soonhis
evil side causeshim
tofind
enjoymentin
thedeaths
of others.When
thearmy
finds
thisout
they
realize thereis something wrong
anddecide
to sendhim home.
Character:
There is
basically
one characterin
this movie.However,
he
plays twovery
different
roles.There is
the characterbefore
thewar,
and the character after the war.Before
the warhe
is just
anordinary
guy
wholeads
anordinary
life.
Then,
oncehe is
drafted
and putin
the
warhis
personality
and mental state change.It's
a sort ofDr.
Jeckle
andMr. Hyde
persona.The
character'sbrain
is
moldedinto
afighting
machine, actually
too
good of one.He
does his job
too well andis
senthome
because
he
is
notmentally fit
tobe
in
the
war.What
wedon't
know
is
thathe is
notmentally fit
to
be
in
a civilizedcommunity
either.
As
the
movieprogresses,
sodoes
the
character.The
audience can see
his
change ofheart
asit
gets closer tohis
death
time.He
starts off as a normalman,
somewhat afraid ofdeath,
but
by
the endhe doesn't
care anymore andfeels he
wouldrather
be dead
thanin
asociety
that
destroys
whatthey
create.The Story:
Once he
is
home he finds
it
hard adjusting
to "normal"life.
On
a normalday
as asoldier,
he
wakesup,
grabshis
gun,
andlooks forward
to aday
ofkilling
the so-calledbad
guys.Now
he
has
to wakeup
and get ajob
andlead
, what weconsider,
a"normal
life".
Unknowingly
though, his
evil sideis
stilloverpowering
the goodin
him.
He
feels
asif
he is missing
something in
his
life. The
overpowering
enjoymenthe
gets when thelife
of someone elseis in
his hands.
This
feeling
eatsaway
athim
untilhe
finally
givesin
to
thetemptations that
lie
withinhim.
He
decides
tofind
the
bad
guysin
the world andkill them,
whichin
turn,
makeshim feel like
abetter
person and makessociety
abetter
place.Unfortunately,
society doesn't
take
kindly
to
aperson who takes
the
law into his
ownhands.
For
somereason,
when
he
was given a gun andtold
tokill
someoneby
his
owncountry it
was alright.But,
whenhe decides
to
take mattersinto
his
ownhands,
anddo society
afavor,
it
is
considered wrong.Whether
asoldier,
acop,
orjust
aguy
with a gun.There
really is
no
difference.
Nobody
else agrees with thislittle theory,
soin
turn, he
is
sentenced todie
by
the electric chair.Hence,
the endof
his life
andthe
end of this story.This
story
did
not come easy.The
originalidea
was tosee
inside
ofa man'sbrain
a watch a mentalbattle between
goodand evil.
It
was supposed tobe
a semi-seriouslook
athow
a goodperson
is
brought
about todo bad
things.After many
rewritethe
story became
whatit
is
today.I
chose to puthim
in
a warbecause
thingslike
thisreally
happen.
It's
amazing how
a personcan change once a gun
is
putin
theirhands.
There
seems tobe
this sense of power and
disillusionment.
I
chose tojump
back
andforth
between
the war and thejail for
various reasons.It
makesthe audience
pay
more attention to whatis
going
on,
andit
makes the
film
morevisually
stimulating.For
an extra addedtouch
I
had
two storieshappening
at once.A
visual one(thewar)
and a verbal one(life after the war).
At
first
I
though
it
mightconfuse
the
audiencebut
instead it
helped simplify
thestory
andmade
it
much more understandable.Another
reasonI
choseto
jump
between
time
frames
is because
I
wantedto take
a"Sunset
Boulevard" approachto the
format
ofmy
film.
It
startsin
the
present time with the maincharacter
being
escorteddown
the
corridorto
his
execution.Then
the
film
goesinto
the
past,
recounting his
experiences atwar.
Simultaneously,
whilethe
waris
being
shown,
narrationtakes
usinto
thefuture,
with the protagonisttalking
abouthow
hard it
wasadjusting going home
andleading
a normallife
withoutthe
war and withoutthe
killing.
He
tellsthe
story
ofhow he
gotin
his
present situationin
life
withoutkilling.
The
audience neverfinds
outexactly
what crimeit
was thathe
committed thatcaused
him
tobe
sentencedto
death,
but
they
know
thathe did
something
wrong.The
audience canbasically
make their own assumption as to what that was.So
atthis
point there areactually
two storiestaking
place.
One
being
a visual one(thewar),
and the otherbeing
a verbal one(his adjustment tolife
after war).Once
his story has
been
told the audienceis
brought
back
to the
present time.The
main characteris
shownin
the electricchair,
dead,
with smokerising
from his body. His
subconsciousthoughts
end thestory
by
saying,
"so here
I
am gone.... sowho's the
killer
now?".It
gives the audiencesomething
to
think about.Society
created this so-calledkiller,
nowthey
killed him.
The
pointbeing,
do
two
wrongs make a right?So
in reality,
aren'twe all
killers
in
a sense?Haven't
we alldone something
or made somedecision
in
ourlife
that
causedthe
death
orwrong
doing
to
someone or something?I'd
have
to
say
the
answeris
yes.Now
getting back
to
my
reasonfor
the"Sunset
Boulevard"
theme.
I
felt
it
made thefilm
morevisually
interesting
jumping
back
andforth between
past and present times.It
givesthe
viewer moreinterest in
thefilm
and causes them topay
more attention
to
detail
and whatis going
onin
the story.So
in
a senseI
wantedto
cause alittle bit
ofconfusion with the audience to make them
become
part of thefilm
andhave
akind
ofinteractiveness
withit.
From my
point ofview and some viewer
feedback,
this attempt was quitesuccessful.
A
lot
of people askedme,
"why
did
youdo
such aserious
movie?."
My
response to that questionis
that everyoneseems to
be
taking
a comical approachthese
days
withanimation.
I
did
two other previousfilms,
both
ofwhich werefunny,
and this timeI
was at alack
ofideas
for
afunny
film.
I
seemed to
have
a comical writersblock. So
I
went with more of aserious concept.
I
felt
I
could create a morefully-rounded
movieas
far
asstory,
mood,
and atmosphere.By
playing
with thelights
I
could create avisually
dramatic look
to each scene and givethe
viewer a sense of compassion towards the character.
Cinematography:
In general,
for
most ofthe
shots, I
tried to
maintain aforeground
andthe
background
by
playing
withlights,
color,
andmost
importantly,
shadows.For
all of thejail
shotsI
tried
to use somberlights
with a slight
fog
mapped on.This
dulled
out most of thebrighter
colors
in
the
scene and gaveit
avery
dull
anddepressing
kind
oflook
toit. I
wanted the viewer tofeel
the uncomfortableness of ajail
andhow
the characterprobably
felt
atthat
moment.However,
by doing
this,
the characters weredulled
out as well.So
I
solved thisby
linking
severaldifferent lights
to
each character.Sometimes
to
individual
body
parts.I
made theselights
abit
brighter
so the charactersdid
not getlost
in
thebackgrounds.
I
didn't
make adrastic
changein
theintensity,
but
just
enough toseparate the characters
from
thebackground. This
alsobrings
the viewers
focal
pointfirstly
tothe
characters,
thensecondly
to the
backgrounds.
The
war scenes were abit
tougher tolight.
I
couldnot
light
the characters the same.The
lighting
wouldbe
toostrong
andtherefore the
scenes wouldbe less believable. So
to
make the war scenes
better,
I
had
todo
alot
ofplaying
withthe
shadows.
By
doing
this
I
couldkeep
one side ofthe
characterbright,
and thelight
wouldslowly fade
to shadows asit
wentacross
his face. This
would makethe
character more noticeableand at the same
time,
the
shadows wouldblend him
into
thebackground
alittle better
and makehim
more realistic.more
life-like
was the particle effectsI
used.Particles
helped
bring
my film
to
life
in
many different
aspects.My
first
use ofparticles was
for
the electric currenttraveling
up
the wires andthe sparks
that
flew
out of the electric chair whenhe
waselectrocuted.
The
electric current that travelsup
the wires whenthe guard pulls the switch shows the
intense
pain that thecharacter
is
about tohave
unleashed onhim.
Now
the sparksreally
help
bring
the electric chair scene tolife. Without
them thescene wouldn't
be
asbelievable.
Granted,
it
is
abit
over thetop,
but
it
does
add alot
to the scene and makes the viewerfeel
his
pain as the
electricity
pumps throughhis body.
The
particlesin
the war scenes
really
played abig
factor.
The only
draw back
tousing
all ofthese
particles was theincrease
in my
render time.It
doubled
the usual timefor
aframe
andin
some casesI
wouldonly
get two tofive frames
rendered a night as compared tothirty
orforty
without particles.But
allin
allit
was worthit
because
it
madethe
final
product all that muchbetter.
The
particles usedfor
the
explosions were quitesimple.
I
tried to createmy
own explosionsbut
the
task wastoo
great and
I
was short on time, soI
found
some explosions on aCD
and tweaked them
to
get various effects, each explosionis
different,
themay
look
the samein
the
moviebut
each onemoves
differently, mainly because
of a windforce
linked
to
eachadded a separate particle emitter on
top
ofit.
This
one wasto
produce rocks
flying
up
from
the ground.This
was ahand
made particle emitter whichI
added agravity
force
to , which made theground
blow
up
as the rockets exploded.The
particles on therockets were a
bit harder.
To
create theseI
had
to use adefault
setting
and tweak variousfunctions
and parameters to get theright effect.
I
alsohad
toplay
with a particles parameterin
therender globals to get the right
feel
for
it. Before changing
all ofthis,
the rocket thrusthad
avery
computerlike
feel
toit.
By
playing
withthese
components(mostly
life
span, generation,
particles per second andtranslucence)
I
was ableto
give therockets a more realistic
look.
This
helped
the scenes greatly.Not
only
did
the
smokelook
real,
but
it
gavethe
rockets a morebelievable look
as well asthe
rest of the scene.The
biggest
particle effect of the all was the grass.It
started off as a motionless plane thathad
avery
flat,
twodimensional,
unrealisticlook
to
it. I
thendecided
todo
it
withparticles to make
it
look better.
I
used ahair
particleemitter,
changed thelife
span, generation,
size,
and elasticity.I
also added a colormap
to
it.
Then,
I
linked
twoforces
to
it
to
giveit
asway
like
abreeze
wasblowing
onit
throughout the
war.This
helped
the war scenestremendously.
It
brought
a sense oflife
to
the scenesthat
were not presentbefore,
especially
whenthe rockets exploded.
There
was afaint
highlight
onthe
individual
blades
of grass whenthe
rockets exploded.When
this
occursthe
viewer can see allthe
details
asfar
as shape and texture ofthe
grass,
andhopefully
they
can appreciateit
more and see allthe
hard
workthat
wentinto making
thefilm.
It
was thelittle
details like
that
whichhelped
make thefilm
a success.Sound:
The final
touch to makethe
film
complete wasthe
sound.
I
got an excellent soundtrackfrom
afriend (Jason
Donati)
who scored
it
for
each cutin
thefilm.
I
wasextremely
pleasedwith the
final
producthe
presented to me.All
the voicesin
thefilm
weredone
by
ahouse
mate of mine(Dave
Babson)
andmyself.
I
alteredthe
voices abit
in
Sound
Editl
6.
The
maincharacters voice was made to sound as
if it
weredisguised.
All
of the other sounds were created
from
various recordings andaltered
to
fit
theindividual
scene.These
sounds were tough.They
were compressed so much that whenI
brought
theminto
the
Avid
they
nearly blew
outmy
eardrums.
I
had
to
play
withthe volume and
frequency
controls withthese
alot
so notto
cause
any
permanenthearing
damage. Once
the
sound wasdown
to a reasonable
level,
I
had
to goback into
theAvid
and getthe
timing
right.There
were some cases wherethe
explosion soundeffects
happened
before
the
actual explosion occurred.In
orderto
fix this,
as wellas,
other problems ofthat
nature, I
had
to
grab
the
sound effects and move them sothey
were placed at
the
right placein
time.This
soundsreally
simple,
but it
is actually
quitehard
to place a soundeffect,
thatis
probably
less
than afraction
of a secondlong,
in
the right placein
time.
Conclusion:
Finally
the movie wasdone.
At
least
I
thoughtit
was.After watching it
athome,
minutes afterwatching
it
onthe
Avid,
I
realized the sound wastotally
off.The
war was still tooloud,
the voice over too
low,
andeverything
seemed to mumbletogether and you couldn't understand anything.
So
I
wentback
to
the
Avid
the nextday (
oneday
before
it
closedfor
the
quarter)
prepared to
bribe
whoever wasusing
it
withtwenty
dollars for
ten minutes worth oftime on the machine.
Luckily,
afriend
ofmine
(George
Stankovich)
wasusing
the machineI
needed andhe
gave
it
to mefor
thelast hour
ofhis time, free
of charge.So
afterlots
oflast
second pressure andlots
ofcorrupted
disk
problems, I
finished.
I
amninety
nine percenthappy
withthe
finished
product.I
only
wish ahad
maybethree
more weeks to re-render two
scenes(
one of whichI
lost due
to
acorrupt
disk
andhad
to cutout)
andfix
some minor soundeffects errors and
timing
problems.They
may
notbe
noticeableto the
viewer,
but
I
can see them andhear
them,
andit
bugs
meenough to want to
fix
them.But
all-in-all, I
amvery
pleased withthe
final
outcome ofmy film
and evenhappier
to
be
finished.
One
and a
half
years ofworking
on the samefilm
was along
time,
andit
got to mehere
and there.But
I
battled
through those toughtimes, finished
it,
andvery
happy
with thefinal

Treatment
My
thesis project willbe
a3
- 4 minute computer animation.Synopsis
Bill
is
sentencedtodie
by
electricchair. Hestares out of hiscellwaiting tobeescortedto thechair, Aguard slowlywalks downthe corridor and opensthecell door. He
then takes himtothe electricchair, sits him down and strapshim into the chair. Bill
sits with a blank lookacrosshis face. A red
light flashes
inthe backgroundand theswitch ispulled. A voice(Bill's conscience)starts to tell astory abouthow he became a killerandweare put in the middleof a war. Missiles are
launched,
bombsexplode andguns fire. Men are quickly running backand forth and die just as quick. One man,
Bill,
standson
top
of a small hill rapidlyfiring
a machinegun. Bodies aredropping
to theground everywhere. One isstill alive. Bill slowly walks over and takes a glance intothe
dying
mans eyes. He hesitates for a secondand thenan evil grinovercomeshis face. Heslowlypullsbackonthe triggerand he finishesthejob. A bombexplodesnearby and with a quickflash of
light,
we see Bill inthe electric chair,dead,
and with smokecomingoff
his
body. Thevoiceproceedstosay howwe, thesocietyand the system,made hima killer. Nowwe mustlive withthefact
thatwekilled

The filmwillbe modeled and animated on theSilicon
Graphics
Machine usingAlias/Wavefront Rendered imagesand sceneswill berecordedon an opticaldisk andthen
