The
nature ofthis thesisis
to
explore the possibilitiesofinteractive
animation.An
animated,
interactive
program whichshows various activitiesand programs of
the
Rochester
Institute
ofTechnology, (R.I.T.),
is
thefinished
product.R.I.T's
history,
upstateNew York
location,
and academic philosophies areincorporated.
The
interactive
disk
containsinformation
about the variousprograms thecollegeoffers,
as wellas,
many
examples of actual student work.It
also shows thesestudentscreating
theirprojects.In
theirownwords,
they
tellabout theirlives
at
R.I.T.,
both in
and out ofthe classroom.Faculty
and staff also offertheirviews,
lending
another perspective ofR.I.T's
philosophies and
beliefs. Because
R.I.T.
offers a variousarray
ofprograms,
highlighted
areonly
some oftheprograms available atR.I.T. The
shownin
detail
are theCollege
ofImaging
Arts
andSciences.
Cooperative
experiences offered atR.I.T.
, andthefinancial
aid available tostudents arealsodescribed. The
videoimages include interviews
anddiscussions
withmany
ofthedepartmental
leaders
ofthecampus,
as wellas,
interviews
withstudents of
different
cultures,
backgrounds,
and programs.This
interactive
program was createdby
using
numerous computer software packages whichis
theactualheart
ofthe thesis.The
programhas been
built
aroundMacromind
Director, VideoFusion,
Specular
Logo Motion
andMorph
andAdobe Premiere.
Any
retouching
has been
completedby
using
thePhotoshop
program.The

The
first
described is Morph.
Morph
According
toJohn
Marlatt,
at
its
simplest,
"morphing"
is
thesequential transformationof one
image into
another.The
effectis
one of visual metamorphosis.
In
addition,
Morph
providescaricaturing
andwarping
features
that
let
theuser extendthe transformation process toproduce a wide range of special effects.
They
continueby
stating,
it
cangenerate, view,
and save asingle,
still
image
ofthetransformation atany
stage ofthemorphing
process.
It
can alsogenerate,
play
and
save,
a moviefrom
thestartimage
to endtheimage.
It
canprintthumbnailsofthe
Morph
movie
frames for
assembly
into
aflipbook,
andany
Morph
moviecan
be
usedin
thesupplied screen-saver module.The
two"images"
usedto
producethe transformation can
be
any
combinationof scannedphotographs,
drawings,
text,
or video clips.These images
canbe
in
color orin
black
and white.Linking
sequinces of start and endimages
toproduce and extend movies of multipletransformations

Essentially,
morphing is
thecreation of a series of
images
"in
between" a startimage
and an endimage,
depicting
thetransitionortransformation
from
oneimage
to theother.This is
adirect
transformationofeachpixel ofthe
Start Image
to thecorresponding
pixel oftheEnd
Image. If
theimages
are ofdifferent
sizes,
Morph
interpolates,
compressing
orexpanding
pixelinformation,
asis
appropriate.Morph
providesvery
much morethan crossfading.
The
userhas
complete control over thetransformationprocess.

or she candirect
thetransition,
spatially,
by
linking
particular areas of eachimage

accelerating

program.VIDEOFUSION
According
to themany
writers ofthemanual,
VideoFusion
combines theexpressive power of video with theextensive synthesis and
manipulation
capability
ofdigital
image processing
in
asingle,
easy
touse application.It
creates anenvironment
for
interacting
withvideo and computer animations
using
theprocessing
power ofmachine vision
technology
to augment manualframe
editing.VideoFusion
containsthemotionoftimeand
dependent
control of parametersto take advantage of thedynamic
nature of video.These
parametersdescribe how
the
frames
of a movie aretobe
processed and are specified
interactively. With
thiscapability,
a
long,
complexprocess canbe
easily
defined
by
VideoFusion
making
theappropriatecalculation on a
frame
by
frame
basis. Such
capability
makesunique special effects straightforward.
VideoFusion
supports a widevariety
offile
formats
in
additionto
its
own customformat
including:
Quick
Time,
Pics,
Pict Sequence
andRaw
Format. These
file formats
allowone to
bring
mediainto
VideoFusion
from
avariety
ofsources such
as;
videodigitizing,
graphics,
andpaint applications.Quick-Time

QuickTime is
alldigital,
theindividual
frames
ofthe moviemay
be
exportedtoMacintosh
based
paint programs to createrotoscoped effects on
QuickTime
movies.
There

applications on theApple Macintosh

Adobe PhotoShop. To
utilizetheseprograms
for rotoscoping
QuickTime
movies,

transferredbetween
VideoFusion

There

High-end-style
special effects can

Infini-D,

fine-tuning,
andrendering
the3D
work
is
still required.By
nature,
3D
graphicsis
quite complex(far
more complicated than
its 2D
equivalents),

slow.LogoMotion
gives youspeedy
andintuitive 3D.
Stagehands
offers severalpre-animated
lights

freedom

for beginners

are three typesof customobjects.
The
first;
areobjectswhich
have
a circularcross-section.
For
example,
a silvergoblet or
flying
saucer couldbe
made
by
using
theLathe
tool.Another
typeof custom objectis
calledan extruded
object.
An
industrial
I
beam
LogoMotion,
is
an example.The
third typeof custom object you
can explore
is
Text,
whichis
aspecial
kind
of extruded object.Key

To
create3D
Text
in
LogoMotion,
there
mustbe
truetype,
ortype onefonts
availablefor
use.After
abevel is
in
effect,
added to thesides of an
existing
object.
The
bevel diagram
ontheleft
side ofthedialog
box
showsthesize and
depth
ofthebevel
thatwill
be
addedto thesides oftheobject.
By
dragging
thesmallred
circle,
the user can customizethe
look
ofthestandardbevel
shapes.
Dragging
thered circle towards theleft
ofthediagram
increases
the
distance
that thebevel
willextend
from
theobject.The
maximum
setting
resultsin
