type,' theevent marked the
latest
step
forward
in
atraditiondating
back
to1828,
whenDarius
Wells,
ofNew
York
City,
perfected the equipment andtechniques
neededto
mass produce woodtype.Wells'
techniques,
coupledwithlater
improvements
madeby
Wlliam
Leavenworth,
aSyracuse
printer,
encouraged more widespread use oflarge
display
types,
thereuponinfusing
newlife
into
commercialadvertising
in
ayoung
andquickly growing country

The
effect that theintroduction
ofwoodtype
carriedis
stillseentoday
in
thesigns, posters,
andbillboards
thatadornthe
face
ofevery
town.Purpose
of the study
The
Cary
Collection
andtheSchool
ofPrinting
atRIT
have
acquired overthe pastfew
yearsasizeable collectionofthis
historic
woodtype,
muchofwhichdates
from
the earliestdays
ofits
manufacture.Until recently
thislibrary
of woodtyperemaineded unsorted anduncatalogued.
A
writtenrecordofthe typefaces that existin
thiscollection wasdeemed
tobe
of great usetoboth
theCary
Collection
andtheSchool
ofPrinting,
providing
muchbetter
accessibility,
onthepart of students andresearchers,
tooriginal materialsdating
from
avery
significant periodin
thehistory
oftypedesign,
printing,
andadvertising.General
accessto these materialshad been
almost nonexistent.The
purpose ofmy
projecthas been
tosort,
examine,
identify,
organize,
and cataloguethecollectionof wood typeatRIT,
andin
sodoing,
providegready improved
accessto thesematerials.Who
benefits from the study
As
statedabove,
thisprojectbenefits both
theCary
Collection
andtheSchool
ofPrinting,
aswellasthestudents and researchers at
RIT.
This
projectis
also ofinterest
tomany
people outside oftheRIT
community,
suchasindustry
leaders
in
digital
typedesign,
whose renewedinterest in
woodtypepromisestoadd a new sparkto thelook
of commercial graphic arts.Why
this project was chosen to be
undertaken
The
courseofstudy
whichthestudentchose topursue atRIT
waslargely
determined
by
his
interests in
thehistorical
aspects ofprinting,
andduring
his
courseworkhe
wasbrought
into
Procedures
How
the study
was carried out
Each
typeface
wasfirst
inspected
for
marks whichmay
have
aidedin
determining
its
manufacturer
and yearofmanufacture.Working
proofs wereprinted of each character setin
allsizes
for
eachtypeface,
andwerecomparedwithexisting
specimenbooks
todetermine
thetypeface
nameand,
if
notalready
known,
themanufacturerandyear.The
samesteps werefollowed
toidentify,
wherepossible,
the ornamentsandborders
thatwerealsoin
the collection.A
cataloguewasorganizedaccording
totypeface
style,
conforming
asmuchaspossibletoISO
9541
standards,
andincludes
printed specimensofcommonly
used characters whichbest distinguish
eachtypefacefrom
other similartypefaces.Each
specimen sheet alsolists
the sizes and completeness of each size ofthatparticulartypefacein
thecollection,
themanufacturer and
year,
and areferenceto thebibliographic
materialin
whichthisinformation
wasfound.
Manufacturers'
marks
found
ontypein
thecollection werereproduced and
included in
a separatesection,
and abrief essay
was written andincluded
asan
introduction
to thefinished
catalogue.Ten
copies ofthecatalogue were printed.An
additionalmastersetof specimen proofs was made
for
eventual reproductionin
digital
form.
Instruments,
equipment,
and laboratories needed
This
project was plannedtobe
completedby
September
of1 99 1
,but
provedtobe
muchmoretime
consuming
thanexpected,
and was completedin November
of1992.
It
requiredaccessto thewoodtypecollection which was
in
storage,
and was movedinto
theCary
Collection's
newfacilities.
Manufacturers'
typespecimensand
books
onthehistory
of woodtype,
which arelocated
in
theCary
Collection
andtheWallace Memorial
Library,
were needed toidentify
the type.Specimen
collections attheRochester Museum
andScience
Center
andColumbia
University
were alsoconsulted.A Vandercook Precision
Proofing
Press
was requiredtoprinttheproofspecimens andthe
final
specimensthatwereincluded in
thecatalogue.
Typesetting
oftheintroduction
andspecificationsfor
each typefacerequiredtheuseofthe
Monotype
services ofMichael
andWinifred Bixler
ofSkaneateles,
New York.
The
student selected and acquired an adequate amount of paper of aquality
thatwasappropriatefor
thisproject.HOW
THE RESULTS OF THE STUDY WERE ANALYZED AS TO ITS SUCCESS
The
success oftheprojectwasindicated
by
the thoroughnessofthe cataloguein
determining
as much ofthe
information
about eachtypefaceaspossible,
as wellasby
the organizationofthecatalogue
in
suchaway
as providedeasy
accessto theinformation. As
theproject wasproceeding.
Before
each newstep
wasundertaken,
thework was reviewed andany
changesdeemed
necessary
by
eitherafaculty
member,
the
projectadvisor,
or thestudent,
were made.Results
of
the
Study
A
Specimen
Portfolio
of
Wood Type
in
the
Cary
Collection
is
thesuccessfulend result ofthisthesis
project.The
portfolio contains specimens of all complete andnearcompletefonts
ofwood
type,
aswell asincomplete
samplesofsome unusualdesigns
found
in
theCary
Collection.
One
hundred
sixty
ofthe286
fonts
in
thecollectionhave
manufacturer's marksimprinted
on one or moresorts,
orpossess someotherdistinguishing
mark orfeature,
allowing for
positiveidentification
by
name, manufacturer,
and approximatedate. This
information
is
givenwiththe printed specimen of eachfont.
The remaining
126
fonts have
been
suppliedwithnames thatbest describe
eachfont based
oncommonly
usedtypographiclanguage.
These
names are given enclosedin
brackets,
and arefollowed
by
entries whichindicate
a manufacturerandtypedesign
shownin
acatalog
ofthatmanufacturer,
whichclosely
resembles the specimenshownin
the portfolio.Also included
witheachspecimenis
adecimal
number,
orin
someinstances
agroup
ofnumbers,
whichrefers to a particularfont's
placement within theorganizational schemedeveloped
for
the collection.Each
decimal
numbercanbe
usedto referto anentry
withinthe portfolio's
accompanying
reference manual(see Appendix
A),
whichincludes information
onthe completenessof character
sets,
marksfound
onthefont,
thebibliographic
source usedtoidentify
thefont
andthelocation
ofthatsource,
thelocation
ofthe
font
withintheCary
Collection's
archives,
and thedonor
ofthatparticularfont.
The
classificationsystem usedin organizing
thewoodtypein
theCary
Collection is
based
not onthe evolutionor
derivation
oftypefacedesigns,
but
rather onthestructure oftheletterforms
themselves.This
systemis
modeled aftertheTypeface Design
Grouping
schemeofthe
I.S.O.
9541-1,

A,

woodtype classificationsystemconsists of a
four
level hierarchical
structure which groupstogether typedesigns
having
similarcharacteristics,
anduniquely identifies
eachindividual
font
withinthe collection.The
highest,
most generallevel
ofthehierarchy
is
theClass,
followed
atthesecond
level
by
theSubclass,
at the thirdlevel
by
theGroup,
and atthefourth
and mostspecific
level,
by
theFont. Descriptions
of alllevels
and categories withinthelevels
aregivenin
thereferencemanual,
andfor
purposes ofclarity
one or more representativecharactersfrom
an appropriate woodtypedesign
are shown with eachGroup
level. At
theFont
level,
the
individual
fonts
are numberedsequentially
in
theorderthat therewereacquired.In
thefuture,
as morefonts
of woodtypeare obtainedby
theCary
Collection,
it is
likely
thatThis
classification systemhas been
tailored
specifically for
thewoodtypenowonhand,
withthe
intent
andunderstanding
thatnewGroup
levels
canand willbe
addedto the system'sstructure,
to allowfor
theincorporation
ofnew acquisitions.It
thereforebecomes
theresponsibility
ofthe person given the taskofcataloguing
the newacquisitionstodecide
whether a newGroup
level
is
needed,
andto take theappropriate measuresin
each situation.Similarly,
it may
be
found
that
some woodtype
designs
seemtobe
associated with more thanone
grouping
withinthe classification system.On
these occasionsit is
againtheresponsibility
ofthe cataloger to choose the one
Group
level
which, overall,
is
most appropriate.The
referencemanual whichaccompanies the portfolio explainsin
detail
theorganizationofthe
collection,
and contains an outline of the organizational schemealong
withdescriptions
of eachcategory
andletterform
structurediagrams
for
eachfont
group
withinthe collection.The
manual's main referencelisting
is
also accompaniedby
threecross-referencelists,
whichallow
information
about eachtypefaceandmanufacturer tobe
accessedin
anumberofusefulways.
Conclusions
Student's Conclusions
&
The
Added Value
of the
Study
Most
conclusionsdrawn from
theresults of aprojectofthis typearenecessarily
subjective.And
while no quantitative conclusions canbe
drawn,
it
cannotbe disputed
that this projectadds
immense
valueto the collection of woodtypein
theCary
Collection. One primary
benefit
ofthis
projecthas been
the addedaccessibility
it
has
provided,
opening up for
anyoneto
view,
alarge
collection ofprinting
history
thatfor
a number of years remained unknownand unseen
by
moststudents and scholars.While
storage withintheconfines oftheCary
Collection
guaranteesthat thewoodtypein its
physical,
tangibleform
willbe
preservedfor
many
moreyears,
theprinted specimens provide people accessto the typein
a muchless
fragile,
andmuchmore usefulform,
andhelp
insure
thepreservation ofthe typefor
alonger
periodoftime.
The
wood type classification systemdesigned for
thisproject alsoaddsincreased
valueto thecollection,
in
thatit
accomplishesin
alogical
manneravery
difficult
task.It
groupsthe woodtype
letterforms
having
similar structuresinto
categories,
and makes comparative analyses ofthe
fonts
withinthecollection much more simple and much morepractical.This
systemalsocan serve as a model
for
thecataloguing
andgrouping
of other woodtype collectionswhichexist at various
locations
aroundthecountry.The
understanding
of,
and appreciationfor
American
woodtypeis
greatertoday
thanit
has
ever
been. The
newdigital
typetechnology
has
spurred much ofthisinterest,
andopensup
strongly
felt
that
allindividuals
andinstitutions
having
in
theirpossessions woodtypecollections of
any
size,
shouldbe
encouragedto producespecimen sheets oftheircollectionsbefore
the typehas deteriorated
beyond
a pointat whichit
can nolonger
be
preserved.Recommendations
for
Future
Studies
As
mentionedabove,
nearly sixty
percent ofthefonts
within thecollectionof woodtypewere
positively identified
by
manufacturer,
name,
and approximatedate.
The
remaining
forty
percent,
due
in
mostinstances
to thelack
ofany identifiable
manufacturerimprints,
could
only be
given general style names whichbest described
each typefacedesign,
andallowed
it
tobe incorporated into
the classification system.It
is felt
thataninteresting
andvaluable project would
be
toresearch,
in
additionto theidentified
typefacesin
thecollection,
eachofthese
"unknown"
typefaces,
and asRob
Roy Kelly
has
done in
his de facto
bible
onthe subject ofwood
type,
determine
thecompanies orindividuals
whooriginally
introduced
these
designs
to the theindustry.
Due
to thefrequency
withwhich woodtypedesigns
werepirated
from
onecompany
to thenext,
thisinformation
would notdetermine
themanufacturersand
dates
ofthewoodtypewhichis in
theCary
Collection,
but it
would offerA Reference Manual

models: the roman, the antique, and the gothicletterforms.
Almost
alldesigns,
he
found,
werederived from
these threebasic
forms,
with the exception of sometruly independent
inventions
whichhe
groupedin
afourth
class, calledthe tuscan class.This
methodof classification works wellfor
a great number of wood type
designs,
but begins
tofalter
thefurther down
theevolutionary
line
onelooks,
as thedifferences
between
gothic tuscan, antiquetuscan,
and plaintuscanbecome
somewhatgarbled, and the relation of thesedesigns
to the original parentletterform becomes less
andless
obvious.The
classification system usedin

Collection
is
based
