SCOPE
AND
BACKGROUND OF
THE
THESIS
The
Panoramic
Image
The
panoramic photographhas
held
the
fascination
ofgenerations.
Some
ofthe
earliestdaguerreotypes
were pano ramas ofParis
and otherEuropean
cities.Later,
the
"ban
quet camera"was
widely
used as atool
to
record assemblies at socialfunctions,
as well asto
aidthe
pictorialphotog
rapher.All
ofthe
above,
in
additionto
the
work of contemporaries such as
Joseph
Sudek,
were photographsincorporating
the
accuraterecording
offigures
and objects'on
the
horizontal
plane.
Recently,
perhapsin
responseto
the
vertical emphasisof modern
cities,
photographers such asEric
Renner*have
aligned panoramic cameras
along
the
vertical axis.In
allinstances
the
image's
beauty
seemsto
be
its
propensity
to
record a plethora of objects which spice
the
mind's sense ofthe
camera's purview at a certaintime
and place.It
is
this
capability
whichfascinates
me,
especially
the
elegance withwhich man and
his
contextmay
be
photographed.The
Pinhole
Image
The
pinhole camerarepresents
to
me one ofthe
mostrudimentary
forms
of photographicimage
making
in
that
subject and record confront each otherdirectly
with mere airbetween
them;
nolenses
are employed.A
kind
ofdirect
transferral
of electro-magnetic
energy
occursin
the
same manner asin
the
centuries-old camera obscura andthe
resultant"sun
prints.'The
images
have
a primitivebeauty incorporating
rings ofdistortion
andindistinct
edges.Despite
the
above aberrations
the
images
canbe
quitesharp
andhave
a wide-anglequality
suitablefor
recording
abroad
context.The
Color
Image
The
color aspect ofthe
thesis
would reflectmy
currentinfatuation
with colorphotography
generally---and
particularly
the
"straight
print."
If
photography
is
a methodto
record andto
expresshuman
experience,
then
"straight"color
photography
seemsto
me onestep
beyond black
and white*Eric

photography
toward
the
quality
of verisimilitudeI
admire.With
this
beautiful
quality
of verisimilitude comes anadditional
problem,
i.e.
aesthetically
pleasing
colorharmony.
The
challengethen
of colorphotography
asI
intend
to
use
it
is
to
recordcircumstances
ofmy
life
asclosely
as possible whileretaining
both
visual and chromaticharmony
and elegance.
Combining
Panoramic,
Pinhole,
andColor
Photography
The
scope ofthe
thesis
is
to
produce pinhole-madephotographic
images
which are panoramicin
nature andin
color.I
have
already
producedimages
whichincorporate
the
qualitiesabove,
exceptthat
they
arein
black
white,
notcolor.
To
my
knowledge
colorhas
neverbeen
attempted.The
camera used was
home-made,
utilized six pinholes and 5"X
17"film.
Because
ofthe
construction(see
diagrams)
,the
siximages
dissolve
andjuggle
themselves,
creating
a new visualspace which
seemingly
lies
along
acontinuous,
but
false,
axiswhile at
the
sametime
retaining
localized
visualfidelity.
This
combination of montage and "straight" reproductionis
the
camera's unique metaphor.There
are several waysin
whichthese
images
couldbe
produced.
The
most obviousway
is
to
record a somewhatliteral
360
panorama,
eitheralong
ahorizontal
or vertical axis.Another
methodI
have
tried
is
to
compose a shot andthen
exposeone pinhole at a
time
whilechanging
the
composition ofthe
scenebefore
the
next pinholeis
rotatedinto
position.In
this
manner one
may
combine repeated andchanging
imagery
(e.g.
a panoramaincorporating
ahorizon
with severalsetting
sunswhile
the
foreground
subject changes positionin
each shot).Although
I
preferthe
moretraditional
panoramic shotsbecause
of
their
greater sense ofverisimilitude,
any
combination ofthe
abovedescribed
approaches couldbe
attempted.Because
color pinhole workis
arelatively
uninvestigatedarea,
somefascinating
phenomena mightoccur,
i.e.
spectraldistortions.
These
aberrationshave
occurredin
the
black
and whiteimages
as streaks oflight
grey.In
colorthey
couldbe
of a more chromatic nature.
In
any
eventthe
color would seemto
underscore a sense ofbelievability
in
the
montages,
