wasdeveloped
as a research toolfor
studentsandprofessionals
interested
in
the
history
orfield
ofcomputer graphicsdesign.
The Archive
containsinformation
on computer graphicsdesigners
and theirwork,
acomparative
timeline
thattraces the
history
ofcomputing
and computers with relationto
communication andmedia,
and aglossary
built
into
the
stackto
help
the
userunderstand more
clearly
whatthey
are researching.The
structure ofthe
Archive
allowsthe
userto
accessinformation
interactively,
thus
providing
themwiththe
means ofeasily accessing
whateverinformation
thatthey
care
to
research atany
time
during
theiruse ofthe
Archive.
In
this
book
there
willbe
individual
chaptersdedicated
to the
different
elementsthatwent
into
creating
the
Computer Graphics Archive. In
each ofthese
chaptersI
willinclude
notonly
anexplanation ofhow
thatparticular elementworks, and wascreated,
but
I
willinclude
examples ofthis
section, and printouts ofthe
scripting
(programming)
that
was usedto
have
this
section ofthe
Archive actually
run.I
have
decided
to
writethis
book
in
this
mannerbecause
ofthe
complexity
ofthe
Archive.
The Archive is
sointeractive
thatit
is
very
complicatedto
explainverbally, andthe
best
way
thatI
could seeto
explainit
wasto
divide
it up
into
sectionsthat
madeup
Opening
Stack
The opening
stack,
orteaser stack,
wasprimarily
developed
for
usein
the
actualshow.
It
consists of several grayscaleimages
thatflash
onthe
screenin
a continualloop,
untilthe
mouseis
clicked.I
alsoincorporated
a timerinto
all ofthe
other stacksso
if
the
Archive
is
not usedfor
2
minuteit
defaults
to the
opening
screen.There
werebasically
two
reasonsthat
I incorporated
the
development
ofthe
opening
stack
in
the
Archive,
the
first
reasonis
that
I
preferredhaving
some sort ofmovementon
the
screento
peak a possible user'sinterest
atthe
thesis
show.The
second reasonthat
I
decided
to
use anopening
screenis
thatit
allowsthe
computerto
returnto
thebeginning
ofthe
Archive,
sothatwhen a personis
finished
with thecomputerhe
won't
have
toworry
aboutreturning
to the
beginning
for
other people.After
testing
my
thesis
on several studentsI
concluded thatthey
never wentto the
beginning
ofthe
Archive
afterresearching, thus
anopening
stack wasevidently
necessary.In
scripting
this
stackI
came across several complications,but
the
mostinteresting
problem
that
came across werethe
grayscaleimages. I
had
a problemgetting
the
pictures
to
loop,
because
ofthe
size ofthe
images
andthe
processing
commandsthe
mouseclick was not
getting
recognized.I
endedup
looking
in
otherthesis'
and
found
a stackthatwas similar
to
whatI
wasinterested in. I
studiedthe
previous studentsOpening
Screen Script
This is

The "User
Selection"is
a stackthatwasinitiated
later
in
the
development
ofthe
Archive.
It
wasdeveloped
to
broaden
the
range of users,by dividing
the
usersinto
"Beginner"
and
"Advanced",
thus
allowing
people withdifferent
levels
ofexpertiseto
use
this
stack.Without
this
division
I
found
that
I
wasleaving
outthe
"Beginners"who
knew little
if anything
aboutthe
Macintosh
let
aloneHyperCard 2.0.
This
stack worksby
simply choosing
either"Beginner"
or
"Advanced"
after
reading
a short
description
ofboth.
If
"Beginner"
is
decided
upon, then you must selectthe
"Beginner"
button
onthe
left
ofthe
screen.This
willbring
youto the
introduction
ofthe
Archive
whichbasically
describes
the stack,
its
units,andthe
navigationalprocess.
If
"Advanced"
is
selectedthen
it
gives youdirections
to
godirectly
to the
compass
icon
whichtakes
youto
themap
ofthe
Archive
(the
navigation controlcenter).
From
this
map
you can select whatyou wouldlike
to
research and godirectly
to the
section ofinterest.
During
the
development
ofthis
stackI
had
experimented with other much morecomplicated versionsof user
level
divisions.
The
levels
wentbeyond
"Beginner"
and
"Advanced",
they
expound onthe
"Advanced"level
with suchcategories such asResearch,
Student,
Designer,
etc.This
wouldhave been
extremely
complicated, notonly
to
decide
which categorieswouldbe
the
best
choicesto
have
in
the
Archive,
but
would
bring
onextremely
complicatedlinks,
andprogramming,
so adecision
wasmade
to
keep
the
"User
Selection"
stack simple and effective.
Although
it
was not asextensiveas
I
wouldhave
liked,
I
feel
asthough
I
have
touched
upon avery

The
navigatoris essentially
a schematic view ofthe
Archive. It
notonly
showsthe
overall
working
ofthe
Computer Graphics
Archive,
it
givesthe
useranotherway
ofnavigating
through the
stacks.It
givesthe
userthe
choice ofskipping
from
one stackto
anotherquickly
andeasily,
whether or notthe
stackis
availablefrom
the
sectionthey
arein
atthe time.
The
useris
ableto
getto the
navigation control(map)
ofthe
Archive
by
selecting
the
compass
button located
in
the
lower
left hand
corner ofthe
screen.This
icon
remainsa constant
throughout the
entireArchive,
giving
the
usercompletefreedom
as towhat
they
wouldlike
to
know
about and when.There
weremany
schematicdrawings
ofthe
Archive
before
deciding
onthe
linear
view.
I
found
it very
difficult
to
expressexactly
how
the
CGA
worked on paperbecause
ofthe
interactivity
ofthe
stacks.Another
concern wasthe
constantbuttons
that
werein
the
lower
left
hand
corner ofthe screen,
I
had
noidea
how
to
showthese
buttons
in
the
schematic ofthe
stack.Finally
adecision
was madeto
have
the
buttons
connect with therest ofthe stack,
but
offby
themselves to
showthat
they
were
constantly
available.The
schematic navigation control stackin
hindsight
has been
one ofthe
best
additions
to the
stack.It
has
increased
the
interactivity
ofthe
stacktremendously,
thus
making
the
Archive
a much moreusefultool.

The

sectionsare,
in my
opinion, the
heart
and soul ofthe
Archive. These
sectionscontain
information
onthe
designers,
in
acompletely
interactive
manner.In
thesesections
my
main objectivewasto
have
any
ofthe
information
available atany
time.The
four
categoriescanbe
seen as separateunits,
but
only
to
a certain extent.For
example,
whilein
the
biography
sectionthe
usercanbrowse
through and read all ofthe
biographies,
but
the
interactivity
ofthis
section also allows accessto
any
ofthe
other sections at
any
pointin
the
Archive. If
a useris reading
abiography
of aparticular
designer
and wouldlike
to
see somedesigns,
or wouldlike
to
read somequotes
from
thatdesigner,
allthey
wouldhave
to
do
is
selectthe
buttons
onthe
left
ofthe
screen(either
"Designs",
or"Quotes"),
andthe
chosentopic
aboutthatparticulardesigner
will appear.This is
available throughoutthe
"Designs", "Quotes",

The

feel
asthough
I
wasvery
successfulin
designing
the
Archive's
interactive
capability, aswell asthe
easein
whichinformation

Archive. The programming
ofthis
section wasthe
mostdifficult
ofthe
entireHyperCard

very
frustrating,
but
overallthis
struggle was worth
the

Screen
Design
The
design
ofthe
screen wasconstantly
changing
untilthe
last
weeksbefore
the
thesis
show.Although
there
were modifications of minor elements onthe
screen,the
basic design
ofthe
screen remainedconstant.The
overalllook
ofthe
screenis
very
simple
because
the
information
in
some ofthe
stackstends to
be
fairly
complicated.I
am
very
happy
withthe
decision
to
keep
the
design
elements simple,because
I
feel
that
it
leads
the
userto the
information
withoutthe
interference
ofcomplicated screendesigns.
In
the
long
runthe
information
andits availability is
whatI
wastrying
to
achieve
in
the
CGA.
The
basic
construction ofthe
screenis
asfollows.
The
left
side ofthescreenis
designated for
burtons,
navigationtool,
andhelp.
The
top left hand
side showsthe
user what stacks are available at
that
pointin
the
Archive.
Down
the
screenthere
is
acompass
icon,
to take the
userto
the
navigation controlcenter,
and arrows thatallowthe
viewerto
browse
through the
stacks.On
the
bottom
ofthe
screenthere
areseveral
buttons
that remain constant.These
are asfollows:
Glossary:
This
takes
youto
a stackto
look
up
any
words orterms that
are unfamiliar.Print:
This
allowsthe
userto
printthe
information
seen onthe
screen.Help:
This
button
has
apop-up
card thattells
the
viewerthroughoutthe
stack whathis/her
options are at
that
pointin
the
Archive.
Quit:
The
quitbutton
exitsthe
Archive.
The
righthand
side ofthe
screenis
allocatedfor
information,
there
may
be
buttons
on
this side,
but
it
is
basically
where all researchinformation
will appear.Screen
Design
There
is
afinal detail
that
is
ofimportance in
the
design
ofthe
screen,the
use ofcolor
in
the
Archive. The
incorporation
of colorhad
notbeen
possiblein
HyperCard until
the
introduction
ofHyperCard
2.0
in
the
fall
of1990,
so,
withthis
newpossibility
availableto
meI
decided
to take
advantage ofit. I
notonly
used color
for
the
CGA
logo,
andthe
buttons,
but
I
used gray-scaleimages
to
show
the
work ofdesigners.
Color
became
avery important
part ofthe
archive,not
only
for
aestheticreasons,
but
it
allowsthe
archiveto
remain on a singleunit(Macintosh
ex)
ratherthan
having
to
load
a videodiscto
viewthe
designer
work.Although
the
images may
notbe
as clear asthe videodisc,
I
seeit
as abig
step
for
interactive
design.
Poster Design
The
posterdesign
wentthrough
many
different
changes,
asany
design does.
The
first
roughs
that
weredeveloped
useddesigns
createdby
pioneer computer graphicsdesigners
as abackground
pattern withtype
announcing
the
Computer
Graphics
Archive. Although
I
found
these
first
ideas
interesting,
I
was notcompletely
satisfiedand
decided
to
pursue otherideas.
I
began
exploring
otherdesign
possibilities,
such assimplifying my
designs,
andtrying
to
work withonly
type.
To
begin
working
ondesign
this
secondtime
I
tookastep
back
andthought
aboutexactly
whatI
believed
to
be
important
to
convey in
the
poster.
After
writing
down
severalthings three
main messages wereimportant.

wasPrototype 1
ofthe
Computer
Graphics
Archive.
2.
It
explored work of computer graphicsdesigners
3.
It
givesthe
viewer ahistory
ofthe
progression of computergraphics
design
throughoutthe
ages.After
understanding
whatI
wantedto
convey I
began
designing
withthese thoughts
in
mind,
and notjust
"haphazardly"
putting
things together.
I
became
very
happy
with
the
results.After
afew days
ofcreating
andadjusting
roughsI
decided
upontwo
designs.
The
first
poster was names ofimportant
pioneersin
computer graphicsarranged as abackground
pattern withinformation
aboutthe
Archive
andthe thesis
showin
red onthe
lower
righthand
corner(poster
1
).
The
nextdesign
was adesign
that
wasvery
complicated.
It
wasa posterthat
showsa progression oftype through the
word"Prototype
1
The
word started out with avery
roughletter,
and continuesalong
becoming
more and more refined.Both
ofthe
posters wereequally
effective,
andI
had
planned onputting
both
ofthe
postersin
the thesis show,
but
because
ofoutputcomplications
only
the
first
postermadeit.

Conclusion
Creating
the
first
Computer Graphics
Archive
has
been
notonly exciting
but
quite achallenge.
I
wasready
for
alot
ofwork,
but
as well prepared asI
wasto
have
anoverload of work
to
do,
I
either underestimatedthe
workinvolved,
ortookon morethan
I
couldhandle.
The
problemscame asI
began
adding
on.In
the
very
beginning
the
designers,
their
workandhistories
as well as a shorttimeline
were allI
wasgoing
to
concern myselfwith,
but
astime
wentonI
decided
to
add sectionslike
the
navigational
control, the glossary,
andmany
otherlittle
sections thatdidn't
take
little
amounts of
time to
create.The
ground workhas
been
developed,
andthe
Archive
will now get a chance
to
be
evaluated,
reevaluated and changed.In
afew
yearsfrom
nowI
willprobably
not recognizethe
Archive,
but
I
know
thatthe
ideas
thatI
have
contributedto the
CGA
are solid ones andhave
giventhe
CGA
asteady
base
to
workfrom.
