in Southeast Asia
onthe
Gulf
ofThailand
andthe
Andaman
Sea,
sharesboundaries
withMyanmar
(Burma)
onthe
west andnorthwest, Laos
onthe
east andnortheast,
Cambodia
(Kampuchea)
onthe
southeast,
andMalaysia
onthe
south.Thailand,
is
rich notonly
in
natural resourcesbut
alsoin
artistic and culturallegacy,
althoughit
was never colonizedby
Europeans. Thailand
has
existed as a unifiedmonarchy
since1350.
This
thesis
provides generalinformation
to
advertise atravel
industry
in Thailand.
Animation,
graphics,
images,
sound and video clips needadvanced computer skills
to
createthis
interactive
project.The
final
workis in
the
form
of aCD-ROM. The
target
users willbe
anyone abovethe
RESEARCH AND ANALYSIS
DATAI
startedto
researchby
surfing
web pages onthe
internet
andI
found
many
sites which provideinformation
about whereto
go,
whento
visit,
whatto
do
andhow
to
visitThailand.
Also,
some web pagesintroduced
briefly
features
in
art, culture, politic, monarchy, religions,
sports and entertainment.
From Wallace
library,
I
continuedmy study
in
published mediain
whichI
noticed somebooks
aboutThailand
were not up-to-date.
Consequently,
I
startedto
searchfor
alternate sources which wouldbe full
ofinformation in
different
media.It
could notbe
anywhereelse,
but
Thailand. With
my
sister,
brothers
andfriends
assistance,
I
finally
received materialsin
form
ofvideos,
CDs,
cassettes, tourist
brochures
anddocumentaries.
The Kingdom
ofThailand,
formerly
known
asSiam,
covers an areaof514,000
squarekilometers
in
the
Indochinese PeninsulA. The
topography
is
divided
into four
distinct
areas:the
mountainNorth,
the
fertile
Central
Plains,
the
semi-arid plateau ofthe
Northeast,
andthe
peninsulaSouth
markedby
its many beautiful
tropicalbeaches
and offshoreislands.
In
the
mid13th
century,
Sukhothai
wasthe
first
glorious metropolis.It
flourished for
over1 00
yearsduring
whichtime the
distinctive forms
of
Thai
art,
architecture and culture werefirmly
implanted;
for
example,
King
Ram
Kamheng
created theinvention
ofThai
writing
in 1283. The
Sukhothai
periodhad
the
mostintellectual
impact
on all consequentThai
political,
religious and artisticlife.
In
the
mid-14th
century
a new and more powerfuldynasty
arose atAyutthaya,
anisland
city
in
the
Chao
Phraya Valley.
Rapidly
gaining
in
wealth,
military
potential andprestige,
Ayutthaya
absorbedthe
former
kingdom
ofSukhothai
and remainedThailand's
capitalfor
41 7
years.Led
by
King
Tabinshwehti,
the
Burmese
invasion
wasthe
first
ofmany
attemptsto
overthrowtheKingdom
ofAyutthaya. After Thai
King
Naresuan
restoredthe
independence
from
Berma,
Ayutthaya
prosperedsteadily,
reaching
the
acme ofits
powerin
the
1 7th
century
whendiplomatic
relations withthe
West
were established andtrade
agreements were made with
the
leading
European
powers ofthe
day.
Weakened
by
internal
conflicts,
Ayutthaya
fell
to the
Burmese in
1 767.
The
city
wasutterly
andcompletely
in
ruins;
reconstruction wouldrequire an
impossible
taskto
undertake with enormous manpower.King
Taksin
moved south andfounded
Thonburi,
a new capital onthe
westbank
ofthe
Chao
Phraya River.
On
the
death
ofTaksin in 1
782,
Chao Phraya Chakri
was proclaimedKing
and,
asRama
I,
wasthe
founder
ofthe
presentChakri
dynasty.
For
strategic purposeshe
movedhis
capital acrossthe
Chao
Phraya
River
to
Bangkok
and aspiredto
makeBangkok
as muchlike
Ayutthaya
as possible.
Under
the
Chakri
Dynasty,
eachKing
tried to
maintainthe
country'sindependence,
avoidthe
colonialfate
of allThailand's
neighbors and
bring
aboutmany
social and political reformsthat
firmly
guidedThailand into
the
20th
century.The
absolutemonarchy
continuedthrough the
reign ofRama VII
(1
925-1 934). But
in 1 932
acoup
d'etat
succeededin
bringing
about a changeto
a constitutional monarchy.Rama VII
accepted the situationbut
choseto
abdicatetwo
year afterthe
coup.The
present monarchis
King
Bhumipol
(Rama
IX).
Retrospectively,
Thailand
had
seenthe
combination and extinction of a number of wide art styles anddeveloped from
ablending
ofseveralexpressions,
foreign
andnative,
to create onethatbecame
a phenomenal masterpiece.However,
Sukhothai
period,
Ayutthaya
period or other periodsinvented
characteristic artin
architecture, paintings,
sculpture or craft.For
years,
monarchy
andBuddhism
weremainly
potentforces
ingrained into
the
bedrock
ofThai
art and culture.Not
only
King
provided patrons toartists
but
also90%
ofThai
people professedTheravada Buddhism
astheir religion
from
time totime.
After
reviewing
allthe
information,
I
tried to
arrangedata
into
groupings whichI
first
consideredbefitting
to
my
thesis.
From
the
title,
Beyond Pad
THAI,
I
had deconstructed
the
word "THAI"into
Treasure, Heritage,
Attractions,
andInsight
which representedto
eachprimary
ingredient
for making
this

Rather
than
depicting
a valuable material such asjewels,
the
TREASURE
section celebrates other subjects
that
are preciousfor
one's spritby
amusing
performances,
enchanting
craft,
relishablefood
andfruit.The
nextdivision,
HERITAGE
commemorates expressionsin
Thai
architecture,
painting
and sculpture which still remainfrom
antecedent generations.Illustrating
a selection of naturalbeauty
images,
the
ATTRACTIONS
sectorinforms
about events andfestivals
all year round anddisplays
particularsports.
The
last
part,
INSIGHT
explainsthe
generalinformation
aboutthe
weather,
topography,
and people.Besides gathering
the
Thai
content,
I
also neededto
considerhow
to
input
the subjects, the
proper computer platform and softwareto
fulfill
this
work andhow
to
outputthe
final
product,
the
effective mediumto
catch user's eyes.The Macintosh
wasthe most potential computerfor my
work.Not
only
were
they
ableto
support andplay
basic
sound or video without extraequipment,
but
alsothey
supported allnecessary
softwarefor creating
any
multimedia work.For
the
selection of substantialapplications,
I
neededtools
for
building
this
project.The
basic
gears appliedfor different functions.
I
usedthe
following
applications; FreeHand
5.0,
Adobe Illustrator
6.0,
andAdobe
PhotoShop
4.0
for editing text,
graphic,
orimages.
I
pickedStrata
StudioPro
1.75,
After Effects

produce3D

animation.Also,
I
edited all sound effects andbackground

Finally,

the
multimedia piece.I

compact piece.The
majority
of multimedia products soldinto
markets areissued
onCD-ROM
(compact
disc,
read-only).The
CD-ROM
is
reasonably
pricedDESIGN SYSTEMS OF
SCREEN LAYOUTThis
multimedia project provides waysin
which a user canaccess,
learn,
andinteract
withinformation
aboutThailand. Not
only did
I
need
to
arrangetext,
graphic, sound,
and video objectsbut
I
had
to
consider
how
to
composethese
elements and makeit
unique,
shapedby
the
project's goal andthe
subjectit
contained.I
divided
the
contentinto
four
maintopics
whichbecome
the
mainoptions of
this
program.It
wasimportant
to
give usersthe
sensethat
they
were alwaysfree
to
jump
to
variousmenus,
help,
or quitfunction.
Therefore,
I
designed
the
bottom
areato
occupy
ofeachscreen
for
alinear
navigation(Figure
1).

In
nextlevel,
each subject provided choicesformed
by
the
content.Users
may
enterfreely
but
wereoccasionally
constrainedto
linear
presentationsof subjects or
to the
branches
of atree
structure(Figure
2).
Also,
I
made aback link
onthe
upperleft
corner ofthe
screenif
users wantedto
returnto
the previous stage.The
rest of screen areadisplayed
the
content.I
The
methodI
usedfor
navigating
from
one placeto
anotherin
this
projectplayed a role
in
the
userinterface
design.
The UID
is
ablend
of graphicelements and
the
navigation system.Although I
consideredgiving
usersoptions
to
shift around withinthe content,
many
open choices mightmake
the
users confused or getlost.
I
set ahighlighting
markfor
the user'slocation
and created anicon
to
representthe
current position.In conclusion, I
decided
to
createicons
as the entrancesto
each section.When I
reached thatconclusion,
I
proceeded withdesigning
mainicons:
Hunting
for treasure,
a scroll(Figure 3)
wasthe
key
atthe
beginning
ofthe
journey. It
leads
the
userto three sources of enjoyment: relaxed withenchanted
music,
compatible movements andluring
attirefrom
eitherfolk
or classical performance(Figure
4). Next
relish with a memorableblend
ofhot,
sour,
and sweetflavors
and greatdecorations from
Thai
cuisine
(Figure
5);
andthen, handmade
productsdisplay
in
a craft cabinet(Figure
6).

letters
falling
down
to
spellthe
section as allingredients

a pan.When it
turned
tothe
mainmenu,
I
edited patterns(Figure

from
the
introduction
partto

the

gavethe

I
decided

Indian,
Sri Lankan
andKampuchean,

the

the

religious complex wasdefined
as a
Wat. It
canbe
usedto
mean a templeor a monastery.
It
denoted
a singleentity
comprising
severalbuildings for
instance
the
main
building,
Bot,
held
aBuddha image
and served as an ordination
hall for
monksonly.
A Vihan
held
the principalBuddha
image
and served asthe
general sermonhall
for
monks andworshippers,
and sometallbuildings,
calledstupas,
chedis orprangs,
contained ashes or relics.
These
buildings
lay
within a single compound where was a social center.For
example,
Wat Phra Si
Sanphet
(Figure

was typical of majortemple complexes
during
the
Ayutthaya
period.

user wantsto
quitfrom
this program,
he
or shewill exit after
finishing
the
credit part.It
was abig
surprisefor
me whenit
kept running back
to the
first frame
ofthe
file
before
the
quitfile.
I
solvedthis
problemby
making
two otherempty files.
CONCLUSION
I
tried to
makethe
project as complete as possible.Due
to the
limited
data,
there
were some parts still under construction.In
the
TREASURE
section, I
merely
accessedthe
performance part whichdisplayed
movie samples ofThai
traditional
dances.
Both
the
food
andfruit
part andthe
craft part showonly
the
primary
icons;
the
clay
potand
the
cabinetwith gold andblack lacquer
decoration.
In
the
HERITAGE
section, I
completed allthree topics
in
eachroom;
a manual slide show
in
the
architecturefield,
a seekhidden images
in
the
painting
subject,
and a candle sliderdisplaying
the
image
ofBuddha
related
to the
day
ofbirth
in
the
sculpture area.In
the
ATTRACTIONS
section,
neitherthe
naturalbeauty
part northe
sportspart were available
to
users.However I
solely
constructedthe
events andfestivals
partinto
a calendarthat
displayed
markeddays
wheneverthe
events were
held
and provided samples of relevant movies.Besides
three
icons
in
the
INSIGHT
section,
I
created aspinning
inscript
stone on which eachface
showsdifferent
information
aboutThai
language.
First
side was mapped withthe
originalThai
writing.All
presentcharacters; consonants,
vowels,
number were printed onthe
next side.I intended
to
introduce
the
basics
ofThai
language;
how
to
pronounce and write withusing
amagnify
glasslooking
for
the
detail
on
the
stone.However,
I
neededto
find
abetter
solutionincluding
the
proper
Lingo
scriptto
accomplishmy design.
Though I
made a circularthermometer slider
to
checkthe
weatherin
eachmonth, it
still neededsome
improvements
to
getit
working better for
the
weather part.Also,
I
planned
to
presentthe
people part withmaking
two
musicvideos;
acity
life
and a villagelife.
According
to the time
for
demonstrating
thesis,
I
did
nothave
time to
survey
allthe
audiences abouthow
muchthey
learned.
My
originalobjectives
for
this
project weregenerally
met.Though
some aspectsI
was not able
to
accomplish.However,
I
provided pamphletsto
givethe
overall
idea
aboutthis
projectfor
visitorsto this
interactive
tour.
I
asked viewersfor feedback
afterthey
finished my
program.Some
liked
the
icons
representedfor
each section.Some
sharedtheir
ideas
andcomments.
For
allfeedback,
I
amdeeply

The Thai
peopleoriginatedin
southeasternChina
where,
in
650
AD, they
founded
the
independent kingdom
ofNanchao
whichthrived
for
600
years.
However,
invasions
and an unwillingnessto
be
incorporated into
mainstream
Chinese
society led
to
waves of migrations southwardinto
whatis
nowThailand.Eventually
several groups ofThai
migrants united and establishedSukhothai
astheir
capitalin
the mid13th
century.Although
other civilizationshad
existed onThai
soil muchearlier,
Sukhothai
wasthe
first
sovereignkingdom
ofThailand. It
flourished
for
over
1 00
yearsduring
whichtime the
distinctive forms
ofThai art,
architecture and culture werefirmly
implanted.
At
approximately
the
sametime,
King
Mengrai,
anally
ofSukhothai,
wasestablishing
the
northernLannathai
kingdom,
centeredin
Chiang
Mai
which was
founded
in 1296.
In
the
mid-14th
century
a new and more powerfuldynasty
arose atAyutthaya,
anisland
city
in
the
Chao Praya River 85
kilometres
north of presentday
Bangkok.
Quickly
gaining
in
wealth,
military
might andprestige,
Ayutthaya
absorbedthe
former kingdom
ofSukhothai
and remainedThailand's
capitalfor

years,
holding
sway
over most ofthe
country
exceptthe
North.
Ayutthaya
prosperedsteadily reaching
the
height
ofits
powerin
the
1 7th
century
whendiplomatic
relations with theWest
were established andtrade

Weakened
by
internal
conflicts,
Ayutthaya

to
theBurmese in 1767.

Chakri Kings
the
borders

West,

Chulalongkorn, 1868-1910),
