Selecting
athesis
projectfor
my
Masters
Degree
wasa
difficult
task.
It
had
to
be
relatedto
my
field
ofstudy,
yetbe
a projectthat
was notsimply
arehashing
of
the
workI
had
done
during
the
first
two
quarters ofmy
graduateyear.
To
getthe
most out of aThesis
related
to
Design
Applications
(Three
Dimensional
Design),
I
wantedto
combinein my
Thesis
researchin materials,
process methods of
materials,
anddesign.
There had
to
be
anintegration
between
design
and material.Each
would
influence
the
other andit
wouldbe
my
task
to
select
an area ofstudy
that
would allow meto
considerboth
material related
to
design
anddesign
relatedto
material.My
choice oftopic
wasfurniture
design.
More
specifically,
how
materialsinfluenced
furniture
design.
My
plans
included
researchthat
involved
seeking
out piecesof
furniture
that
have
won acclaimfor
their
unique useof material.
Selecting
whatI
considered unusual materialsthat
furniture
couldbe
madeof,
I
began my
search.Prac
tically
every book
onfurniture
in
thelibraries
werelooked
at.
Starting
with "Furniture" asmy
mainheading
of
interest
in
the
Art
Periodical
Index,
I
wentthrough
all
the
sub-headingsthat
suggested an article about orfor
their
design
but
for
the
material of whichthey
weremade.
As
with mostresearch,
onething
led
to
another andmany
times,
I
couldfeel
myselfbeing
side-tracked,
orfound
myselfspending
too
muchtime
on a subjectthat
really
was not pertinentto
my
Thesis.
I
discovered
thatthe
materialbest
relatedto
my
topic couldbe
seen andpossibly
photographed.
The Museum
ofModern
Art
in
New
York
City
has
a permanentdisplay
offamous
chairs andtables,
many
of which werefirsts
in
terms
of the materialsthat
they
were madeof.
A Thonet
rocker and aMies
Van
der
Rohe
tubular
stainless steel chair werebut
two
examples of a material
influencing
a chairdesign.
Some

manufacturershad
showroomsin
New York
City
thathad
furniture
ondisplay
madefrom
unusual materials.I
spentfour days
in
New York
City
visiting
theMuseum
ofModern
Art,
America
House,
The Museum
ofContemporary
Crafts
and a number offurniture
showrooms.I
also spent some timein
some ofthe
more modernbuildings
merely walking
aboutlooking
at some exquisite modernfurniture.
Those
four
days
in New
York
City
did
morefor
methan
two
weeksin
the
library.
I
wasfortunate
to
be
ableto
photographthe
furn
iture
display
in
the
Museum
ofModern
Art,
althoughI
was not permitted
to
getvery
closeto
the
furniture
it
pic-tures
wasLaverne
Incorporated,
located
in
theDecorative
Arts
Building.
Mr.
Laverne
permitted meto
wonder aroundand
take
pictures,
but
I
had
to
sign a statementstating
that
the
photographs wouldbe
usedonly
for
my thesis.
I
was morethan
happy
to
sign.
The
Laverne
Gallery
has
some ofthe
most unusualchairs
that
I
had
seen.
Chairs
made of clear plasticthat
wereamazingly
confortable.
The
trip
terminated
my
researchinto
whathad
been
done,
and whatis
being
done
today.
I
find
that
mostfurniture
today
is
madefrom
the standardmaterials,
woodand
metal.
It
is
safeto
say
that
the
best
designed
furn
iture
today
is
made ofthese
materials.What
I
wantedto
do
for my
Thesis
waslocate
an existing
materialthat
has
been
overlooked asfar
asdesign
possibilities and work
up
someideas
onhow
this
materialwould work as an
integral
part of a piece offurniture.
I
quickly
realizedthat
designing
chairsin
relationto
material would
be
more worth-whilethan
considering
beds,
tables,
chestsetc.
By doing
chairsonly,
my
Thesis
would
have
more of acontinuity
andI
could compare oneidea
with another anddecide
which material showedthe
most potential
in
terms
of chairdesign.
Actually,
considering
the
time
involved
to
do my
thesis,
I
had
to
take
the
liberty
ofworking
backwards.
materials
I
wasworking
within
designing
my
chairs.
Ce
ramics
in
particular,
was much of amystery
to
mebut
I
worked
up
ideas
for
chairsthat
I
thought
couldbe
constructed
in
ceramicmaterials.
One
thing
has
to
be
saidfor
my
procedure andthat
is,
I
wasn't restrictedin
terms
of
design.
My
thinking
wasfree wheeling
and uninhibited.I
figured I
could make the proper revisions after consultation
with peoplelike
Frans Wildenhain
andMr.
Sekely.
I
chose whatI
thought
were materialsthat
had
latent
design
possibilities.
Much
to
my
surprise anddismay,
allbut
one ofmy
conceptshad
been
tried
in
oneform
oranother.
I
developed
sketches and elevations of allmy
ideas.
In
most casesI
made revisions ofideas
aftertalks
withknowledgeable
people.
Comprising
the
bulk
ofmy Thesis
is
background
material,
whichI
feel
is
pertinentto
my
topic,
namely,
materials
andtheir
influence
onfurniture
design,
andmy
ownconcepts of materials
influencing
my
chairdesigns.
With
most of
my background material,
I
have
included
short comments,
and each one ofmy
chair conceptsis
explainedquite
thoroughly.
Of course,
I
have
included
withmy
explanation of
my
work allthe
shortcomings ofmy projects,
ERFURTH
I
BENTWOOD
Michael
Thonet,
aGerman,
wasthe
greatinovator
ofthe
technique
ofbending
wood andapplying
the
bentwood
to
furniture.
The
Thonet
rockeris
typical
ofthe
elaborate
furniture
design
that
thebentwood
allowed.Thonet
developed
the
processfor
bending
wood around1850
andsince
then
millions of pieces offurniture
have
been
manufactured
in
bentwood.
Thonet 's
simple side chairdesign
is
probably
the
best
known
and mostwidely
used of allhis
furniture
creations.
Chairs,
tables,
beds
and even coat andhat
racks weredone
in
bentwood.
The
rockeris
typ
ical
of all ofThonet 's
furniture
designs.
The
invention
of a process ofbending
wood,
influenced
Thonet,
to
someextent,
to
design
his
furniture
ashe
did.
The
possibilities andlimitations
ofthe
materialdic
tated
greatly how
a piece offurniture
wouldlook.
The
process ofbending
woodis
actually
simple.
The
wood
is
steamed untilit
is very flexible
andthen
clampedinto
aframe
and allowedto
harden.
Bentwood has
provento

ideal
for
furniture because

strength anddurability.
Thonet
alsodeveloped
the
technique
ofbending
laminated
vaneer and used
the
technique
in
furniture

design
of
bent
veneers,
the

to
dictate

Decorative

two
side chairsillustrated
weredesigned

Charles
Eames.
They
aregenerally
considered masterpieces of
design
andtechnical
ingenuity.
Every
element
in
the
chairis
functional
in
oneway
or anotherand
every
elementincluding
the
rubber supports underthe
seat andbehind
the
back
addto
the
comfort ofthe
person sitting.
The
chairs arevery
flexible.
The
molded plywood seat and
back
areexceptionally
comfort-able and move
slightly
to allow changesin
sitting
positions.

workability

strength and
durability
wereimportant
factors
to
be

designs
furniture
for
public places.Because
the aluminum wasdie
cast,
Eames
had

determining
the

Associates
ofProvidence,
Rhode
Island
have
worked on a number of experimentalchairs.
Shown
here
is
a chair with ahollow
shell seatformed
by
joining
atop
andbottom
section of molded plastic.The
sections
bonded
together
form
ahollow
core which acts asan air
cushion.
The
legs
are welded steel andthe
seatis
supported and
held
in
placeby
giant suction cups.This
possibly
facilitates
changing

Laverne
Incorporated
is
manufacturing,
whatthey
call,
"Invisible
Chairs".
They
are madefrom
clear plastic andthe
shapes are vacuumformed
over a mold.The
plasticchairs are crystal clear and are
really
quite comfortable,
due
mostly
to
thecushions.
The
chairs are novel and were of greafinterest
to
me
for my
project,
but
they
seemedto
lack
a warmquality

coffeetable
