"COMPOSITION
IN
WOOD AND
PIGMENT"Detail
It
is
nearly
impossible
to
simply
statemy
initial
reasons
for
undertaking
this
particular project.In
the
past several yearsI
have
found
that painting is
the
mediumin
whichI
canbest
express myself.Unlike
pure pigment
painting,
collage and/or assemblagepainting
can often create greaterimpact
onthe
viewerand
thus
make a statement of greater clarity.*
In my
paintingsI
amattempting
to
make a statementof
many different
causes or reasons. Thesemay be
very
personal andsincere,
historical,
or evenbitterly
satirical.
I
amfirst
of all concerned withthe
overall composition and
its
initial
impact.
Butthis
composition
is
directed
and guidedby
the
desired
statement.
This
may
soundlike
a rather cold and calculated methodof
painting but
I
have
found that
this
planning
wasnecessary
to have
an end resultthat
communicatedthe
message or statement
that
I
had
initially
intended.
I
do
find
that
no matterhow
muchI
planmy
painting'scomposition,
statement, etc.I
still cannot predeterminethe
end result.This
I
would not even attemptto
do
asI
am sureIt
wouldbe
impossible as well as undesirable.I
don't
feel
that
a painter can ever predicthis
ownhis
painting
andthus
completeplanning
may
be
found
to
be
nearly
impossible.
I
have
not meantto
makeit
soundlike
I know
whatmy
paintings will
completely
state or evenlook
like
beforethey
arefinalized.
I
only
attemptto
know
enough abouthow I
planto
makemy
statement comeinto
view andhow I
want
to
basically
composethe
over-allpainting to
makethe
strongestimpact
onthe
viewer as possible.I
think
my
paintingsdo
showthis
clearly in that
they
may
appearas
being
rather wellthought
out paintings\n
over-allcomposition
but
onfurther study
they
showthat
the
statement
may be
readin
severaldifferent
ways ormay
notbe
ableto
be
read at all. Canthis
be
wrong?I
think
not.Because
if the
viewer reads a message or statementthat
I have
notintended
heis
atleast
involved.
One
certainly
cannot predict what motivatesthe
viewer andif the
viewer associateshimself
withthe
samethings
asdoes
the
artist.I
am surroundedby
my
enviroment andI
have
nodesire
orintention to
withdrawfrom
it
in
any
way. Because ofmy
intent
involvement
with allthat
surrounds meit
is
only
natural
for
meto
incorporate
myself,
my
inviroment,
andthus
my
personalfeelings
aboutmy inviroment
into
my
paintings.
In this
I
ammaking
statementsvisually
conI
amfully
aware ofmy
being
anAmerican
andbecause
ofthis
I
have
chosento
incorporate
the
American
flag
ascollage material.
I
am notintentionally desecrating
the
flag
but
rather amattempting
to
bring
attentionto
it
in
correlation withthose
things
that
it
is
presently
involved
with.This
involvement may
be
articlesthat
denotate
war,
tragedy,
nostalgia orany
one of a numberof
things.
I
have
also attemptedto
use materialsfor
collagethat
are
readily
found
around us everyday.Our
worldis
in
deed
complex and confused andthus
I
have
attemptedto
portray
this
feeling
into
such paintings as "Composition"by
using
these
found
collage materialsin
anorderly
conglomeration of collage and pigment.
I
have
found
in this
past yearthat working
with collagecan
be
rewarding
but
I
have
alsofound
that
it
is
ahard
medium
to
work with.It
is
too
easy to
get over-relianton
the
collage and much ofthe
drawing
that
is
necessary
with
strictly
pigmentpainting
is
lost
and/orforgotten.
As
a wholeI
think many
ofmy
paintingsfor this
projectare sucessful
but
they
may
remainto
be
somewhat relianton
the
collage and under-drawn.I
have
found
a understanding
ofthe
collage mediumbut
still realizethat
I
have
only
touched
upon a small percentage ofits
possiII
During
the
past yearthat
I
have
spentworking
with collageand relief
painting I
have
discovered many things
aboutthe
medium and
how
collage and relief relateto
a statementthat
apainting may
attemptto
visualize andthus
how this
marriage of statement and media react
to
the
total
painting,For myself,
I
have
found that
I
musthave
somethought
orpersonal
feeling
or statementto begin
within
a painting.I
cannot paintsimply for
the
pure sake ofcreating
apainting.
I
have
alot
to
say
aboutmany
a variousthings.
Much
ofthis
"saying"cannot,
or atleast
is
noteasy,
to
relate
in
words.This
is
why
I
paint.In my painting
I
can place on canvas
that
whichI
cannot verbalize andI
can come closer
to
expressing
my thoughts
andfeelings
anddo
so atnearly
the
same ratethat
they
materializein
my
mind.
I
planmy
paintingsbut
yetI
still paint ratherspontaneously.
This
is
one ofmy
largest
reasonsfor
using
collage.
Collage
is
real andtactile
andthe
images
arebasically
there
withouttedious,
and sometimesfruitless,
mannipulation of
the
pigmentto
attainthe
desired
effect.Collage
may
wellbe
easy
to
work within that
it
is
fast
and can
be
complete.But
to
say
that
it
is
easy
because
one
may
paste ratherthat
paint animage
is
false.
I
have
found that
oftentimes
the
desired
effectmay
be
lost
orovershadowed
by
a collage pictureetc,
andits
unforeseencreate a certain
feeling
of emotion and withoutrealizing
it
employedsomething
that
has
many
different
"hidden"denotations.
It
is
alsoeasy
to
become over-reliant onthe
collage andto
forget
or overlookthe
pigment.In
doing
this
the
painting may
eventually
violatethe
two-dimensional
plane ofthe
canvas.The
line between the
collage surfaced
painting
andthis
painting
planethat
has
been
violatedis
onethat
I
soughtbut
never,
asyet,
have
found
it.
Without
going
into
detail
concerning
my
statementsthat
I
have
attemptedto
makethrough my
paintingsI
do
feel
that
the
medium of collagehas
madeit
possiblefor
meto
create
the
impact
andhopefully
the messagethat
I
intend
ed.
Somehow the
impact
of aphotograph,
newspaperhead
line
etc. seemsto
bring
to view,
and/ormemory,
much morethan the
pure paintedimage.
I have
done
several paintings onthe
death
ofPresident
Kennedy
andthe
different
aspects of warin
general.This
type
of subject matterlends
itself
wellto
the
use ofthe
medium of collage.I
have
found this
to
be
somainly
because
the
viewerhas
his
own vivid recollections orideas
about subjects of
this
nature.This
is
perhaps somekind
ofplay
onthe
emotionsbut
the
memories andimages
of againquickly
draws
in
the
viewer and makesthe
intended
message or statement come
into
being
with a greaterimpact.
The
statementsthemselves
indeed
play
a major rolein my
paintings
but
certainly
mostany
messagemay
be
aidedby
the
use of collage.Collage
may
certainly
be
employedfor
the
sole purpose ofcreating
a relief pattern etc.but
this
I have
exploredvery
little
in my
project.For
methe
problems were
different
than
those
createdfor
the
reliefaffect.
I
set outto
make a statement andthrough
theuse of
collage,
in
correlation withthe
pigment,
the
endresult
had
to
read as a statement and atotal
painting.This
aspect ofthe
total painting
wasthat
whichI
feel
that
I
experiencedthe
mostdifficulty
in
attaining.I
often
found
that
eitherthe
message read orthe
compositionread as a
painting
but
to
combinethese
two
into
atotal
painting
that
moldeditself
from the
two
ingredients
andresulted
in
onetotal
canvasI
found
to
be
difficult.
In
several paintings
I
think that
I
have
succeededin
doing
this.
Of
these
I
feel that
the
most successful mightbe,
"ATTICTORIAL
MEMORIES"or
possibly
"COMPOSITION
III".
Of
those
that
arefarthest
from
attaining
this
total
concept"COMPOSITION

TIME

did
concerning
my

andfor
periodsranging
from
15
minutesto
aslong
as11
continuous
hours.
This
worktime may have been
occupieddoing

painting,
searching
for

nointention
oftrying
to
putinto
words allthat
wentthrough my
mind asI
went aboutmy
hopefully
creative process of collage painting.
However,
I
do
think
that
it may
help
the
viewerto
know
some ofthe
basic
personal philosophiesthat
I
was guidedby
andsome of
the
reasonsfor
my
choices asto
collage material,As
I
earlierstated,
I
am not an anti-American andI
have
notdesecrated
the American
flag
for any
reasonother
than to
bring
into
vividfocus
that
which surroundsus all.
I
think
that
America
is
the
rightfulleader
ofthe
world andit
standsfor
allthat
I
believe
in
andI
am proud
to
be
anAmerican.
Such
paintings as"Mother,
I've
gone",
"Dead
Valiant",
and
"Americanism
II" areclearly
statements of war andall
that
It
holds
for
wethe
individuals
that
fight
it.
I
am nottrying
to
changethat
whichis
but
ratherI
amonly
trying
to
bring
into
viewthat
which wehave
cometo
know
as war.I
am notsupporting
nor amI
criticizing
the
United
States'foriegn
policies...I
ammaking
astatement.
"Martyr
1963"and
"Collage
1963"are concerned with
the
death
ofPresident
Kennedy
and allthe
horror,
injustice,
"Visible
Landscape",
"Attictorial Memories",
and"Ben
Franklin II" are canvases
that
werepurely
inspired
by
my
own nostalgiafor
the
lost
past.These paintings mentioned
here
and allthe
other onethat
I
have
done
for
this
senior projecthave
been inspired
by
my
own personalfeelings
andhopefully they
convey
at
least
a small portion of allthat
I
have
placedinto
them.
Mentally
andverbally
these
subjects are oftenexpounded upon
but
in the
