Lost
Eyes
Introduction
This
paper explains the production ofmy
thesis"Lost
Eyes"which
is
a3D
computer generated short animation.I
will explain theprocess
I
wentthroughin completing my
thesis.There
weremany
challenges and obstacles to overcome,
however it is
complete andI
am
very
satisfied with thefinal
product.To
make things organizedI
broke
the paperdown into
sixtopics, story
development,
characterdevelopment
anddesign,
environmentdevelopment
anddesign,
development
anddesign
ofanimation,development
anddesign
ofsound and review ofthesis completion.
Story
Development
The story for my
thesis wasgoing
tobe different
thanmy
previous work.
In
the past,my
animation'shave been
comedies andfeel
goodfilms.
Since
I have
a realinterest in horror
films
withtwisted stories,
I
wantedtodo something dark
and scary.Influenced
by
thefilm
Halloween,
theanimationSandMan
andThe
first
pass atdeveloping
my
thesisstory
accepted was afailure.
I
had
to overcome questionslike
whatis
the ghost's goal?Why
is
the ghosttrying
to wakethis
baby(Mikie)
up?And why is
this ghost
bothering
Mikie?
See my
originalstory
was tohave
aghost stumble upon this
house
whichhad
ababy
sleeping.The
baby's
nameis Mikie
andhe
seemedtobe
having
problemssleeping.
The
ghost wanted to wakeup
andeventually
scareMikie.
However,
after three attempts oftrying
to getMikies
attention theghost
leaves because he
couldn't get the satisfaction ofscaring
Mikie. This story
was not accepted anddid
not get passedby
theFilm/Video/Animation
faculty.
The
ghosthad
no real goal.Finally
after
I had
modeled this ghostI
realized thathe physically had
noeyes.
Here
washis
goal.The
ghost wantedMikies young
andbeautiful
eyes.Instead
ofjust wanting
to scareMikie
the ghosthad
a need and
desire for Mikies
eyes.So
the ghost goes through threeattempts of
trying
tograsp
and take these eyes.Each
attemptis
filled
with surprises and abstractions, whichultimately leads
to thefailure
ofthe ghostin completing his
goal.At
the end ofthestory I
decided
tohave Mikie
acknowledge theghost.
He
sees the ghost as thisfunny looking
transparentthing
floating
abovehis
crib.As
the ghostis ready
torip Mikies
eyes out,Mikie
is
trying
toplay
withthe ghost,like
it
was playtime.In
thebeginning
ofthestory Mikie is
crying,however
in
the endhe is
laughing
because
ofhis interest in
the ghost.Eventually
the motherdecision for
theghost;
quickly rip
the eyes out ofthis cutelaughing
baby
or settlefor
the eyes of astuffedteddy
bear in
the room.The
ghost
feels sympathy
for
Mikie
and takes off with theteddy
bear
eyes.
This
is
thestory
I
was satisfied with and wouldeventually be
accepted
by
thefaculty
soI
could continue on withmy
thesis.Character Development
andDesign
Having
thestory down
and acceptedit
was time toconcentrate on the characters.
Since
the characters were wellestablished
in my
mindit
waseasy
tocreate the visualdesign
andpersonality
ofboth
characters.The
ghost was to appeartall,
thin andscary looking. I
wanted awhite, cloudy, transparentcolor
for
the ghost to add toits creepy
appearance.
The
personality
ofthe ghost was tobe
tamedbut
definitely
on a conquest.He
was tobe exploring
thishouse
untilhe
came across these babies' eyes.
The
minute the ghostsees the eyeshis desire is
enragedtohave
themfor himself. Mikie
was tolook
like
a cutebaby
trying
to sleep.He
wasgoing
tolook unhappy
andcrying
until thevery
endofthe story.At
the end whenMikie
acknowledges the ghost
he
becomes
cute andfilled
withlaughter.
Technically
I
wantedtokeep
the ghostandMikie
as simpleas possible.
They
weretobe
real andlifelike,
but I didn't
wanttomake them too complex, which might
limit
my
ability
toanimatethem.
I
figured
having
themwith simplergeometry
wouldgive meThe
transparency
ofthe ghost was a great challenge toovercome.
The
ghostshad
tohave
abelievable transparency,
however
nottoo transparent
were the viewer couldn't see some ofthe
facial
orkey
animated expressions.After
weeks oftests
withtransparency
mapsI
cameup
with afew
transparent
ramps whichI
used
for
thetransparency
ofthe ghost.These
ramps workedfor
themost ofthe
shots,
however
some shots were composited withAfter
Effects.
In
these shots thetransparency
ofthe ghost wasdone in
After
Effects
by
just applying
it
to thelayer
ofthe ghost.I
waseventually
satisfied with thedesign
anddevelopment
ofthe ghostand
ready for
the animation stage ofmy
thesis.The
challenge with thedesign
anddevelopment
ofMikie
wascreating
abelievable
texturemap for his face. There
weremany
revisions of
his face
andI
thinkit
wasn't untilthefifth
one,I
wasfinally
satisfied.The
fifth
texturemap
was created with a scannedimage
ofmy
sistersbaby boy
David. After
theimage
was scannedin,
it
was projected onto thegeometry
ofMikie'
s
face. Then
theprojected texture was
brought
into Studio
Paint,
wereit
waspainted and touched up.
It
is
atedious process,but if
you wantrealism
it's
a process thatworks.The
actual modelfor Mikie
wasbuilt from
his
chesttohis
head.
There
was no reasonto modellegs
andfeet
for Mikie because
he
wasgoing
tobe
under ablanket
all the time.However,
thatlead
to
animating
theblanket
which was also tedious andtimelittle
easierto animate each shotofthe
animatedblanket.
Now
thatthe
design
anddevelopment
ofMikie
was completed.I
wasready
to animate
Mikie
andcontinue onmy way
tocompleting
this thesis.The
thirdbut
small characteris Mikies
mother alsoknown
asmommy.
This
characteris only
in
afew
shots and neededvery little
attention to the
development
anddesign. It
wasonly
the shadow ofthe mother
I
wantedin
two shots and the mother's arms andhands
in
afew
other shots.Lighting
the mother was a challengein
orderto get the correct
shadow,
but
was achieved withlittle headache.
The geometry
ofthe arms andhands
waskeep
simple toestablishthe same
look
asMikie.
Continuity
had
tobe
establishedbecause
ofthe mother and son
relationship
and thefact
thatthey
wereboth
humans. With
all thecharactersdeveloped,
it
now was time toestablish the environment
in
which these characters wouldbe
animated.
Environment Development
andDesign
Since
allmy
charactershad
simple geometry,but
weretolook
as real as possible,
I
wantedto go all out on theenvironment. The
environment was
going
tobe
a great challenge.I
wasgoing
toreally
pushmyselfin
efforttocreate this photorealistic world.The
story
takes placein
ahouse late
at night and to thebest
ofmy
ability I had
tocreate aliving
room,hallway,
stairway, andbabies
room with
high detail.
Making
it
abelievable
setting
for
my
story.I
environmentcreates
realism,
depth,
and aninteresting
worldfor
these characters to
be
animated.One
majorchallengeI had
to
overcomein
creating
thisrealisticworld was to create an environment with
high detail
with somewhatsimple geometry.
I
knew if
the environment wasloaded up
withelaborate models then the animation and
rendering
wouldbe
slowed
down
considerably.A
greatway for making
ahighly
detailed
environment with simplegeometry
was to use alot
oftexture maps.
Almost every
surfacehad it's
own texturemap
whichI
createdin Adobe
PhotoShop
andStudio Paint. Some
surfaceshad
up
to sixdifferent
maps appliedto the shader.This
also slowsdown
the
rendering but
not as much as an environment with complexgeometry.
Another
major challenge waslighting
theenvironment.Most
of your
horror films
takeplace at nighttohelp
create a creepy,scary
and suspenseful environment.
I
also wantedmy story
to take placeatnight, so each shot was to
be dark
andpoorly lit.
However,
I
wanted the characters to
be bright
and vibrant sothey
would standout and not get
blended
into
thedark background.
I
overcame thisby
exclusively
linking
somelights
to the characters.These
lights
would
only
light
up
the characters and not effectthe environment. For
example, youhave
aball
in
aroom, theball
wouldbe
visible andthe room would
be
black.
The
environmentwould alsohave
exclusive
lights linked
toit,
which wouldonly
affect theexact oppositeas the one
before. After overcoming
these two and afew
other challengesI
wasready
to startanimating
the charactersin
this
realistic3D
world.Development
andDesign
ofAnimation
Since
I
built
all thecharacters with simplegeometry, theanimation was an easierprocess than
I
expected.Some
ofthe shotshowever had
alot
ofgeometry
because
ofthe environment.For
example
if it
were a wide shot with alarge
background,
thelarge
background
wouldbe
complex andheavy
with geometry.This
created a problem with
animating
thecharactersin
a complexenvironment.
The
more complex the shotthe slowerthe animationprocess.
I
stripped the environment modelsdown
aslow
asI
couldmake themand still ran
into
problems.One feature Alias/Wavefront
Studio
has is
theability
tooverlay
skeletons.This
allows you toanimate
just
the skeleton andoverlay
the characterbody
after theanimation
is finished. This
solutionincreased
the speed ofanimating
extremely
andfixed
theproblemI
raninto
withanimating
characters
in
complex environments.Another
feature
Alias/Wavefront
Studio has is inverse
kinematics(IK).
This feature
allows you tosetkey
frames
on anIK
handle
ratherthan on eachjoint
ofthe skeleton.It
also constraintsthe
joints making it
easierto move thejoints
into
the position youdesire
them toin.
Using
Alias/Wavefront
Studio
was abig
application.
Besides
the animationofthe characters and othermodeled
objects,
I
alsohad many
animatedtextures
creating
specialeffects such
as,
the static on thetelevision
screen.Ultimately
theanimationwent
smoothly
with no real majorproblems.Development
andDesign
ofSound
The
person,
who composedthemusicfor
my thesis, had
alsocomposedmusic
for
my
previous work.His
nameis
Ian
Sanchez
andhe
is
anEastman School
ofMusic
graduate.Normally
theprocessis,
first
the animationis
finished
thenbrought
to the composertobe
scored.
However,
due
to timeconstraints we satdown
and scoredthe music to
my
storyboard.We
cameup
withbasic
theme tocreatea mood ortone.
I
wantedthe music tobe
similartoJohn
Carpenter's Halloween. In Halloween
the music created asuspenseful and
thrilling
environment,
withpiercing high
andlow
tones.
It
alsohad
adistinctive
melody, which was repeated over andover and
kept
you on the edge of your seat throughout the wholemovie.
Ian
gave memany different
clips of music with variouslengths
andI just
edited them onto the animation whenit
came timeto edit.
This
process workedbefore
and was successful soI
wasconfidentwe could accomplish the same
quality for my
thesis.All
ofthe special effect sounds camefrom
a compactdisc
library
exceptfor
the sound ofthe mother, whichI
recordedfrom
Conclusion
In
this

have

many
great challenges.I
evaluated thestory

Treatment:
The
scene opens with a close shot of an exteriordoor

the

The door is
shaking

however from
the
