Creating a Server or Published Application Connection

Creating a connection to a Citrix server or server farm is very easy. The principal of the tools differs slightly from that of the Windows based client. To start with, the Citrix ICA Client for the Macintosh does not have Program Neighborhood functionality. Instead it is more of a fixed configuration using connection files to establish connections.

If Program Neighborhood functionality is desired, it is recommended to use Citrix NFuse Classic or Elite to deliver the application set. However, it is still required that you install the client through the aforementioned series of steps.

Citrix ICA Client 6.30 for OS 10.x

The recently released Citrix ICA Client 6.30 for OS 10.X is Citrix’s first native 10.X Macintosh client. While it functions very similarly to the 6.20 client, both installation and configuration are slightly different. Also note that if you intend on using NFuse to deploy your applications, the ICA Client 6.30 for OS 10.X is not natively configured for it after the installation. Please read the Citrix Knowledgebase article ID: CTX795700 for more information on how to use NFuse with OS 10.X.

Installing the Citrix ICA Client 6.30 for OS 10.x

The first step to install the Citrix ICA Client 6.30 for the Macintosh is to acquire the appropriate archive. It is recommended to download the software directly from Citrix to ensure the most current release. If downloaded, the file will come as a disk image format, or referred to as a .dmg file.

The contents of the mounted drive will reveal a folder titled Citrix ICA Client. Copy this folder to your desired location. In the following image, the folder is copied into the

Applications folder.

Configuring the Citrix ICA Client 6.30

The Citrix ICA Client for the Macintosh OS X functions on the same principal that the OS 9 compatible client version 6.2 operates. Both clients allow you to use the Citrix ICA Client Editor tool to create a connection file which, when executed, initiate a connection to the desired server using the Citrix ICA Client application. While they both operate similarly, the OS X Client Editor looks slightly different, but works much the same.

Begin configuring the connection to the Citrix server by opening the Citrix ICA Client

Installing the Citrix ICA Client For Java On the Macintosh OS 10.2

The Citrix ICA Client for Java on the Macintosh can provide your user with complete Program Neighborhood functionality. The Java Client 6.20 is almost identical to that of the Win32 based client. Note that we are working with the Java Client 6.20, and not the Java Client 6.30 which is designed for web server based deployment only as an applet, not an application.

To begin, it is necessary to download the java client setup application. This file can be found on the Citrix website in the section titled downloads. The file downloaded is called

setup.class. Save it to your home your home directory.

Next, you will need to open a terminal session. Typically, the terminal program can be found in your hard drive, under Applications, Utilities folder. Double click on Terminal to launch it. You will find yourself at a command prompt with your home directory set as your current working directory. To begin the installation, type java setup and press enter as seen below. If it fails to launch the installer, make sure that the file setup.class is in your current working directory. If not, change directories in to the folder where you stored the

setup.class file.

(25)

Next, read and accept the license agreement. Then, press Next to continue. The following screen asks you to select the primary destination directory. In the example below, the folder /applications/Citrix Java Client is selected. If the folder doesn’t exist, the installer will prompt you to create it. Select yes.

Finally, you’ll be presented with confirmation screen, and the option to Install. Select

Launching the Citrix ICA Client for Java

To launch the Citrix ICA Client for Java, change into the folder where the files were stored into. If you followed the preceding installation instructions, you would need to change in the /Applications/”Citrix Java Client” folder. Note the fact that quotes are used around the Citrix Java Client portion because of the spaces located in the folder name. Once you are in the correct location, launch the client with the following command line:

java –cp JICAEngJ.jar com.citrix.pn –CDMPromptAlways:false

Using MRJAppBuilder to Create a Custom Java Application

In the previous steps, it was demonstrated how to install and launch the Citrix ICA Client for Java. The drawback with the aforementioned procedure is the difficulty for the end user to launch the java application. To simplify it, you can use the MRJAppBuilder to create an application bundle which is an icon used to launch the Citrix ICA Client for Java.

To start with, MRJAppBuilder is only included in the Macintosh OS X Developer Tools. The developer tools can be installed from the OS X product CD’s, or downloaded from Apple at http://developer.apple.com.

Once the Developer Tools are installed, launch the MRJAppBuilder by opening the hard drive, then the Developer folder, and finally, the Applications folder. MRJAppBuilder should be located within this folder. Double click on it to launch it.

If it launches successfully, you should be presented with the application as shown below. The first thing you need to do is enter the Main classname. In the text field, enter

(30)

After selecting the Java Jar file, you’ll need to set the output file name and location. Press the Set… button in the Output File section. Another file and folder browser window will open up. Switch to the Java Properties page. In the list, find the property titled growbox.intrudes. Click in the value field for this record and erase the entry leaving the box blank.

If you wish to include online help, you’ll need to complete several extra steps not included here. Refer to the Citrix Knowledgebase article ID CTX284477 for more information.
