1. Applicants must have completed a bachelor’s

degree (BA or BS) from an accredited four-year

institution by the end of the spring semester prior to

entry. You are not required to be a graduate of

Hunter College to apply to this program. If you have

taken courses in a non-accredited institution in or

outside the U.S., these courses will not be accepted

as equivalent to Hunter College courses, and will not

be accepted as helping to meet the number of

credits required for earning a bachelor’s degree or as

counting toward our prerequisites. Even if another

U.S. college accepts those credits, we will not. For

example, if you have taken 30 credits abroad or in

the U.S. within a non-accredited institution, these

credits will not be accepted as meeting the minimum

of 120 credits to have earned a bachelor’s degree,

even if you were granted a bachelor’s degree by

another college in the U.S. Be sure the credentials

you are paying for are valid elsewhere.

We require an undergraduate cumulative grade

point average (GPA) of 3.0 or above. If a course is

repeated, both grades are used in GPA calculation.

2

.

Two semesters of Anatomy & Physiology, with lab

(e.g., Anatomy & Physiology; Biol 120, 122)

3. Two semesters of physics for science majors, with

lab (e.g., General Physics; Phys 110 & 120)

4. Two semesters of chemistry for science majors,

with lab (e.g., Chem 102, 104 & 106 (which is lab for

Chem 102 &104)

5. One semester of college level mathematics (e.g.,

Math 125, Precalculus: If you are taking this course at

Hunter, you may email [nmoy@hunter.cuny.edu]

to request registering for MATH 125 without the MATH

126 corequisite.)

6. Two semesters of psychology. We recommend,

but do not require, one semester of developmental

or child psychology.

7. One semester of statistics (e.g., Stat. 113 or

Statistics for Psychology majors)

8. One semester of English composition (e.g., Eng

120 (Expository Writing) or its equivalent.

Association (212-878-5900, www.americanheart.org)

OR

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certification by the Red

Cross (212-787-1000, www.nyredcross.org). An advantage

of taking CPR through the American Heart Association is

renewal every two years, not annually. You must submit a

copy of your CPR card to the Physical Therapy Program at

the address above.

10. Two on-line letters of recommendation. We suggest at

least one be written by a physical therapist. Formal letters of

recommendation attached to a completed clinical

experience form will be considered one letter of

recommendation plus documentation required of the

clinical experience. The online application process requires

LOR's be submitted electronically (on-line) and requires you

type in the email address for those you will list as

recommenders.

11. Documented clinical experience of at least

100

hours in

the United States under the supervision of a licensed

physical therapist, with a minimum of 50 hours in a

hospital-based or rehabilitation setting. See documented

experience for additional information on submitting a

Clinical Experience requirement. You cannot complete all

of your clinical experience in a private practice! The most

common error made by applicants is not fully meeting this

requirement by

November 1

st

.

12. Filing of the Hunter College Graduate Admissions

Online

Application. The online application becomes

available approximately August 15th. You can use this link

to access the application:

http://www.hunter.cuny.edu/graduateadmissions.

We do not accept scores from the

previous version of the GRE (before the Fall of 2012). If you

are first taking the exam this fall, be sure to indicate when

you have taken the GRE's and be sure we get the scores

sent to the Admissions Office ASAP. We do not have a

specific cutoff score for being considered for admission.

For information on the GRE, go to www.gre.org

14. Applicants invited for interviews will write an essay

about a topic chosen by the DPT faculty on the day of the

interview.

15. The TOEFL examination is required for applicants who

have not earned a bachelor's degree in an

English-speaking country. We expect a score of at least 550 on

the paper based; 79-80 on the Internet based; and 213 on

More Admission Information

Admissions Procedures

Acceptance to the Program

The Graduate Admissions

Office at Hunter College will open online

applications on or about August 15 for the program that begins the following June.

The Hunter College Graduate online application, unofficial transcripts, clinical experience forms and online letters of

recommendation have a November 1st deadline for

submission. Use the attached

Applicant Checklist to guide you on meeting the

admission requirements.

We ask that you submit to the DPT department a completed copy of this applicant checklist. Documents submitted by eligible applicants will be reviewed for GPA,

completion of prerequisites, clinical experience and other relevant experience in health care to identify those eligible for interviews. An interview is required with faculty of the Hunter College Department of Physical Therapy. Subsequent to the interview, a standardized

scoring form is used to evaluate each applicant, based on GPA, TOEFL scores, clinical experience, essay quality, and interview scores.

Meeting theses minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance to the program, which is based, by necessity, on the limitations of space and resources. Hunter College Physical Therapy Program is dedicated to equal opportunity for all applicants who meet admission requirements.

Our enrollment is capped at twenty-eight students per year. To achieve this goal, we typically offer seats to approximately 40 highly qualified applicants. If you meet our requirements, we urge you to apply. Please note that an interview is a meaningful component of

the admissions procedure, andtherefore overall GPA is not the sole factor for acceptance. If you have questions regarding your qualifications, or need to speak with an advisor, please contact the Physical Therapy office.Applicants will be contacted by the

Department of Physical Therapy regarding

scheduling of an interview. We will request official transcripts of applicants we plan on admitting to verify the records you previously submitted.

Students who have not completed all course prerequisites may be conditionally accepted for the incoming class; but all requirements must be met

prior to the starting date of the program in early June. You may apply during the year you are completing your requirements. Indicate on the checklist what courses are completed and what is in progress, and submit unofficial transcripts before

Novemberr 1st. We will

expect updated transcripts after completion of each semester once the application is submitted.

DO NOT WAIT TO SUBMIT TRANSCRIPTS UNTIL AFTER FALL GRADES ARE POSTED.

Trimester Schools & Quarter Hour Credits: Schools that use the trimester calendar award quarter hour credits for courses. One quarter credit equals 0.7 semester credits. If a course was 4 quarter credits, then it is equal to 2.7 semester credits, if the course was 5 quarter credits, then it is equal to 3.3 semester credits.

The bachelor’s degree requirement for entry is based upon the CAPTE criteria which mandates that physical therapy programs are “…built on a balance of course work in social sciences,

humanities, and natural sciences, which is appropriate in depth and breadth, to develop the ability in students to think independently, to weight values, to understand fundamental theory, and to develop skill for clinical practice, including critical thinking and

and who demonstrate a professional commitment

to the further development of the profession of physical therapy.

4. Physical therapists who have an appreciation for life-long learning in their careers.

The 3-year curricula for the Hunter College DPT degree is based upon the need for students to receive a strong foundation covering all aspects of Physical Therapy practice, followed by the attainment of advanced skills.

This graduate curriculum builds from such a basic foundation, beginning with a series of core courses for evaluation, treatment and clinical problem solving skills, followed by

advanced clinical course work covering all areas of clinical practice. Hunter College PT faculty feels entry-level graduates need greater emphasis on clinical skills and critical inquiry of evidence with a foundation in research design and methodology.

The curriculum has continuously evolved to provide graduates with the necessary knowledge and skills to succeed in a physical therapy career. The design and content of this program is based upon a detailed review of physical therapy practice, accreditation guidelines, and the Guide to Physical Therapist Practice. The Program is full time, during the days, and three calendar years in duration. Students enter in the summer semester only. Refer to the curriculum outlined on the next page for actual courses. To review the course descriptions, please go to our web site

www.hunter/cuny/edu/pt

The purpose of the Doctorate in Physical Therapy curriculum is to prepare professionally competent physical therapists that will be capable of providing a diverse scope of Physical Therapy services. The educational goals of the DPT Program at Hunter College are to prepare: 1. Clinical professionals capable of providing a full range of physical therapy rehabilitation and health care services to meet the diverse needs of patients with musculoskeletal, neurological,

integumentary and/or cardio- pulmonary

conditions, as well as health promotion and wellness services to the general population.

2. Physical therapists who are capable of assimilating the changing health care needs of society into their delivery of services. 3. Physical therapists who are knowledgeable consumers of scientific information and research,

FAQ

More FAQ’s

One more FAQ

What type of bachelor’s degree should you get?

We do not want to drive your undergraduate education. You should pursue a bachelor’s degree (BA or BS) in a major that suits your interests and is related to working with people and/or

is related to healthcare. For example, degrees in Psychology, Nutrition and Food Science, Community Health Education, Exercise Physiology or Biology are all very acceptable

undergraduate degrees. Our philosophy is for you to obtain a marketable

undergraduate degree in an area of interest. This degree, coupled with a DPT degree upon

completion of our program, will give you excellent credentials for working in any area of Physical Therapy and health care in the future. Hunter College Department of Physical Therapy 425 East 25th Street New York, N. Y. 10010 212-481-4469 www.hunter.cuny.edu/pt Once You Are Accepted:

Letters of acceptance are usually mailed in February. An orientation for incoming PT students is usually scheduled for the middle of the spring semester. You will be notified of this orientation in a letter of acceptance mailed by the PT Department. Additional information on the

curriculum, schedules, etc., will be provided at that time.

Criminal Background Checks:

Applicants to any professional program in

which state licensing is required will be questioned about any previous arrest and/or conviction record. Clinic affiliation sites are also beginning to require criminal back-ground checks prior to a student being approved for placement in a clinical internship at that site. Please be advised that your past record many prevent you from completing this or any professional program and/or may prevent you from being eligible for licensure in New York and other states.

International Students and Foreign

Trained Physical Therapists

How to Get More Information

International Students:

Translations and evaluation of

transcripts from colleges outside the U.S. must be completed early in the application process. If you want assistance with reviewing your coursework taken outside the U.S. and have not yet submitted an admission application, you may contact the Graduate Admissions Office by email at

gradadmissions@hunter.cuny.edu

The Admissions Office does not accept World Educational Services (WES) evaluations of transcripts.

Foreign Trained Physical Therapists:

If you are qualified to work as a physical therapist in another country, you may not need to apply to our program. Contact the N. Y. State Board of Physical Therapy to determine if your education allows you to take the National Physical Therapy Examination. You must hold a bachelor’s degree to beconsidered eligible. If you wish to

become a licensed Physical Therapist in the U.S. then you must apply to an accredited physical therapy program. The Physical Therapy Program will require you to apply and enroll in the entire curriculum. We do not waive courses from other colleges or universities. You must also complete 100 hours of clinical experience in the United States, Canada, Australia, or England.

Evaluation of Transfer of Courses:

Most students applying and admitted to our program have completed undergraduate course work outside the City University of New York system. Your best method to determine if a course you have taken or are planning on taking will meet our requirements is: First, ask your advisor or course instructor if the course will typically transfer to a four year college. Be sure it will not transfer as elective credits, but as an equivalent course at a four-year college. If you are taking a prerequisite course at a two-year college in the CUNY system, a course equivalency guide is

available to you at:

www.tipps.cuny.edu.

Schools that use the trimester calendar award quarter hour credits for their courses. One-quarter credit equals 0.7 semester credits. Example: If your

trigonometry course was 4-quarter credits then it is equal to 2.7 semesters’ credits, if the course was 5-quarter credits, then it is equal to 3.3 semesters credits. All AP credits listed on the college transcript are considered regular college credit.

Applicant Advisement:

Members of the Physical Therapy faculty are available for counseling appointments. These are

only scheduled after receipt of this information packet. Contact the Physical Therapy Program secretary between the hours of 9:00 - 2:00 to schedule an advising appointment. THESE ARE NOT INTERVIEWS.

Informational Session Dates: The Program Director hosts an

informational session every semester about the Program, prerequisites, the admissions process, and answers questions regarding entry into the Hunter College DPT Program and other New York State schools. Please call for the date and time of the next scheduled session or check our web site homepage for dates posted on the calendar.

HUNTER COLLEGE

DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICAL THERAPY

CLINICAL EXPERIENCE FORM

APPLICANTS - READ THIS CAREFULLY

All applicants to the Department of Physical Therapy at Hunter College are required to have had practical

experience in a physical therapy setting in order to be considered for admission to our program. We

recommend that you try to select a health care facility having a physical therapy service, which treats a

variety of disability groups and ages.

Your participation in the Physical Therapy Department can be either on a paid or voluntary basis. We require a

minimum of 100 hours of exposure of which at least 50 hours are obtained in an acute care hospital or

rehabilitation setting. A multi-disciplinary in-patient hospital type rehabilitation setting is considered

acceptable toward these 50 hours as well. IF ALL YOUR CLINICAL EXPERIENCE IS IN A PRIVATE

PRACTICE, SCHOOL SETTING OR NURSING HOME - YOU WILL NOT MEET THE CLINICAL

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT. You must make your own arrangements for this experience.

CLINICAL EXPERIENCE FORMS MUST BE COMPLETED BY A PHYSICAL THERAPIST AND

SUBMITTED IN A SEALED ENVELOPE FROM THAT FACILITY.

ONLY ONE CLINICAL EXPERIENCE FORM WILL BE ACCEPTED FROM EACH FACILITY FOR THE

APPLICANT.

ONE PAGE LETTERS SUBMITTED BY A VOLUNTEER OFFICE WILL ONLY BE ACCEPTED TO

DOCUMENT CLINICAL HOURS. THEY DO NOT REPLACE A CLINICAL EXPERIENCE FORM FROM

A PHYSICAL THERAPIST.

To verify your experience and to provide a reference for you, the opposite side of this sheet must be completed

by a licensed Physical Therapist who observed your performance. He/she is to return the completed form to

you in a sealed envelope with initials of person completing form on seal for inclusion into your self-managed

application packet. Enter your name and address on the top of the form and sign the disclaimer before

forwarding to the physical therapist. (I suggest you attach a post card to the clinical experience form, which we

will then mail to you indicating receipt of the completed form.)

The absolute deadline for receipt of the Clinical Experience Forms is

November

1

st

. Forms received after

November 1st will delay your application being reviewed for eligibility for an interview.

You may photocopy this form if you require more than one form submitted from more than one facility.

Applicants, mail the completed form to:
