The credit union idea began more than 160 years ago with a simple idea — people helping people.

In the 1850s, hard times hit Germany, and people turned to each other for help. They removed small savings from under mattresses and made reasonably priced loans to one another. These early credit unions were the model for all the credit unions that followed: not-for-profit, democratically controlled and community oriented.

In the 1920s, Edward Filene took cooperative finance to the next level in Boston, as a means of lifting working people out of debt and creating a better life. On January 17, 1927, the Credit Union League of Massachusetts celebrated the first official credit union holiday. January 17th is the birthday of Benjamin Franklin, America’s “Apostle of Thrift,” who credit union founders believed to symbolize the purpose and spirit of credit unions. During this time, the credit union movement was new and spreading. People involved only began to recognize the celebration’s significance and were unable to devote the time required for sufficient planning. Credit Union Day quietly faded away.

The U.S. Credit Union National Association (CUNA) and CUNA Mutual Insurance Society initiated a new national Credit Union Day celebration in 1948. The third Thursday of October was set aside as the national day of observance. This occasion brought members together to promote the credit union philosophy nationally and reflect upon credit union achievements and history. Members raised funds for the movement and paid homage to loyal supporters and pioneers.

The World Council of Credit Unions, established in 1971, assists credit union movements and supports their development around the world. World Council observed the first International Credit Union (ICU) Day more than 30 years ago, and continues to endorse global celebrations. The credit union movement has grown to more than 200 million members in 101 countries. Celebrate the credit union difference during this year’s ICU Day – October 15, 2015.

When you have the chance, lend a hand. Don’t be afraid to try to take a stand. Pay it forward, expect nothing back. Compassion is something we all lack. A word of kindness is sometimes in need, So is the chance to commit a good deed. Pay it forward, take nothing in return. Compassion is something we all can learn. If you see the need, follow your heart, Helping others out will always be a start. Pay it forward and pass on the charity, Compassion is out there, we all will see. Help someone out with a life changing event, Let someone feel that you were heaven sent. Pay it forward, all the kindness inside, Compassion is out there, it hasn’t died. Show your neighbor what they’re worth, And the reason that you’re on this earth. Pay it forward without ever any regret. Compassion is here, let us not forget. Jon M. Nelson

YOU ARE AN OWNER.

Members who belong to the credit union are its owners, not merely customers. That's because credit unions are set up as not-for-profit cooperatives.

YOU PAY LOWER LOAN RATES AND

EARN HIGHER DIVIDENDS.

Because credit unions are not-for-profit businesses, they return income to members in lower loan rates and higher savings rates. Also, unpaid qualified volunteers serve on the credit unions' boards and committees. This means lower costs of doing business--no hefty payments to a corporate board. Credit unions pass along those savings to members in the form of better deals.

YOU PAY LOWER FEES.

At the credit union, you'll find no or lower ATM fees, lower service charges on checking accounts, and lower fees for overdrawn checks than fees at banks.

Here are four key factors that

set us apart from other financial

institutions:

Let's All Cooperate

with Helping Hands

1

Open and voluntary membership. It's important that members voluntarily choose to become members. Ideally, according to the principles reaffirmed at the Manchester (England) Congress of the International Cooperative Alliance in 1995, cooperatives are "open to all persons able to use their services and willing to accept the responsibilities of membership...."

2

Democratic member control. Members ultimately control their cooperatives. When you attend your credit union's annual meeting or vote for the board of directors, you're exercising your member-owner control.

3

Member economic participation. According to the Manchester Congress, "Cooperatives operate so that capital is the servant, not the master, of the organization."

4

Autonomy and independence. While governments determine the legislative framework within which co-ops function, this principle asserts that co-ops also have an "essential need to be autonomous in the same way that enterprises controlled by capital are...."

5

Education, training, and information. This principle says members can play their role in the cooperative only when they understand that role and the co-op. That's one reason, for example, that your credit union provides you with this information and other educational tools.

6

Cooperation among cooperatives. Cooperators believe that co-ops have a unique opportunity to protect and expand the interests of ordinary people. This kind of one-for-all and all-for-one idea is unique among businesses. Even in localities where they compete, it's common for them to also cooperate on numerous activities.

7

Concern for community. Cooperatives exist primarily for the benefit of their members. Because of this strong association with members, they also are often closely and actively tied to their communities. We at CSE strive to give back to those who have given us so much. We are very active around the community and participate in several community events. CSE proudly sponsors McNeese Athletics, MusicMakers2U, Cell Phones for Soldiers, Ethel Precht and several Lake Area Schools annually.

Helping Hands

Credit unions are not-for-profit financial service

cooperatives, owned and controlled by their members, and operating in a democratic way. What difference does that make?

Co-ops are businesses, in many ways like any other business. But a cooperative operates solely for the members' benefit. All co-op businesses run in accordance with seven basic principles, many of which have been part of the co-op philosophy from their beginnings more than 150 years ago.
