Attachments – Internet Explorer

Outlook Webmail allows you to share files with your email correspondents through the use of attachments. This document discusses accessing email attachments, attaching files, and deleting attachments using Outlook

Webmail.

Opening Email Attachments

Often, you will receive messages that will have files attached for you to view using Word, Notepad, Excel, or other programs. Most attachments can be accessed directly, but some attachments must first be saved to your disk before opening them. If this is the case, a pop-up window will appear alerting you to this. Refer to Saving Attachments for instructions on saving an attachment to your disk.

1. If the Reading Pane is displayed, in the Folder Contents area, select the message containing the attachment

The message content is displayed in the Reading Pane.

OR

If the Reading Pane is not displayed, in the Folder Contents area, double click the message containing the attachment

The message appears in a new window.

NOTE: If you are using Internet Explorer 7, depending on the options you have set, the message may appear in a new tab.

2. Click the attachment you want to open The File Download dialog box appears. 3. Click OPEN

The attachment opens in the appropriate program.

Saving Attachments

You may not have time to view or work with an attachment when you receive it. These steps show you how to save an attachment without opening it.

1. If the Reading Pane is displayed, in the Folder Contents area, select the message containing the attachment

The message content is displayed in the Reading Pane.

OR

If the Reading Pane is not displayed, in the Folder Contents area, double click the message containing the attachment

The message appears in a new window.

NOTE: If you are using Internet Explorer 7, depending on the options you have set, the message may appear in a new tab.

2. In the message, from the Attachments section, right click the linked filename » select Save Target As...

3. Using the Save in pull-down list, navigate to the appropriate save location 4. Click SAVE

Opening Email Attachments as Web Pages

This option allows you to view an attachment even if you do not have the application which created it. For example, you can view an Excel spreadsheet even if you do not have Excel installed on your computer. While viewing the attachment in this way, you still have the option to print or save it or, if you have the related application, open it.

1. If the Reading Pane is displayed, in the Folder Contents area, select the message containing the attachment

The message content is displayed in the Reading Pane.

OR

If the Reading Pane is not displayed, in the Folder Contents area, double click the message containing the attachment

The message appears in a new window.

NOTE: If you are using Internet Explorer 7, depending on the options you have set, the message may appear in a new tab.

2. Next to the attachment, click OPEN AS WEB PAGE The attachment opens in a viewing window.

3. To print the attachment from the viewing window a. Click PRINT...

The Print dialog box appears. b. Make the desired selections c. Click PRINT

a. Next to You are currently viewing, click the linked filename The File Download dialog box appears.

b. Click OPEN

5. To save the attachment from the viewing window

a. Next to You are currently viewing, click the linked filename The File Download dialog box appears.

b. Click SAVE

The Save As dialog box appears.

c. Using the Look in pull-down list, navigate to the desired save location d. OPTIONAL: In the File name text box, type a new name for the file e. Click SAVE

The Download Complete dialog box appears. f. Click CLOSE

Attaching Files

It is often necessary to attach files from Word, Notepad, Excel, or other programs to messages you send to people.

1. Compose a new mail message

2. When finished typing the message content, from the Message toolbar, click ATTACH FILE

The Attach Files dialog box appears.

3. Under Include Attachments, type the path of the attachment (e.g. H:/Folder/file.doc)

OR

To select the attachment a. Click BROWSE...

The Choose file dialog box appears.

b. Using the Look in pull-down list, locate and select the file to attach c. Click OPEN

The Attach Files dialog box reappears. 4. OPTIONAL: If you wish to attach additional files

a. Click CHOOSE MORE FILES

An additional text box appears. b. Repeat step 3

When composing a message, you may change your mind about sending an attachment and wish to delete that attachment so it is not sent with the corresponding message. However, attachments can be deleted only before the corresponding message is sent.

1. In the New Message window, select the attachment(s) to be deleted by clicking it The attachment is highlighted.

2. Press [Delete]

The attachment(s) are now deleted from the message. 3. To send the message, click SEND
