...Bird-Johnson propellers setting the standard.
In 1986 we acquired an industrial facility in Pascagoula, Mississippi, and turned it into the most fully equipped state of the art ship propeller manufacturing center in the United States. Here, Rolls-Royce produces a broad line of Bird-Johnson fixed pitch propellers in diameters from 40 inches to 33 feet. This extensive product offering is backed by the industry’s largest inventory of patterns and a captive foundry dedicated solely to the manufacture of marine propellers.
Our engineering team includes many well known naval architects and marine engineers as well as world class hydrodynamicists. This combination of experience and expertise gives us an exclusive technical advantage when it comes to evaluating the use of stock or custom-designed propellers for any application. Only then, through the special skills of our foundry men, machinists and propeller technicians, do these engineered solutions evolve into high quality marine propellers worthy to carry the Bird-Johnson product name.
Commitment, capability and capacity are the driving forces behind Rolls-Royce. Experience true quality. Experience Rolls-Royce.
The 62,000 sq. ft. Pascagoula facility is dedicated to the manufacture of marine propellers.

Engineering and development
Rolls-Royce has more expertise, more experience and more comprehensive resources than anyone else in the industry. Fixed pitch propeller analysis and sizing is handled by our quali-fied staff of accomplished marine engineers and naval architects educated in the proper application of both stock and custom-designed propellers.
If you want our recommendation on what kind of propeller is best for your kind of work, Rolls-Royce will provide such information as a shared technical resource available at all levels of product application.
We are dedicated to exploring new technologies through cooperative programs with naval research and development centers as well as other leading testing facilities throughout the world. We are involved with comprehensive computer-aided engineering (CAE) analysis and utilize these techniques to accurately predict strength and loading. Other recent activities include investigations in:
• Nonmetallic composite components for improved weight reduction
• Improved materials for longer life and easier maintainability • Improved welding techniques
• Greater hydrodynamic efficiency
At Rolls-Royce your particular application is engineered before the propeller is fitted to the shaft.

The success in producing Bird-Johnson fixed pitch propellers results directly from our precise control of the ever-so-critical foundry process. Such is the integrity of casting operations, right here in our own Pascagoula facility, we are able to offer extended service life, ease of repair and a product that lives up to those promises.
Thanks to the assistance of leading foundry experts, such as Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), we have consistently advanced our capability in casting technology to provide the best bronze and stainless steel castings available. Moreover, our stringent foundry process control combined with our comprehensive quality assurance program ensure optimum quality in every casting.
Five electric induction and three reverbatory furnaces provide pouring capacity in excess of 195,000 pounds. Bird-Johnson propellers are manufactured in a variety of materials to meet diverse customer needs. Standard alloys include:
• manganese bronze • nickel-aluminum-bronze • stainless steel

Metal properties
Manganese bronzeManganese bronze propellers are the most inexpensive to manufacture. Easy to finish, manganese bronze has long been the tradi-tional bronze propeller alloy.
Nickel-aluminum-bronze
The high tensile strength of nickel-alu-minum-bronze allows the manufacturer to produce propellers with many built-in design features such as thinner blade sec-tions. The advantage of a thinner blade is less hydrodynamic drag which greatly improves a vessel’s operating efficiency. Nickel-aluminum-bronze is the metal of choice for US Naval Vessels.
Stainless steel
Propellers manufactured in our ASTM Grade CF-3 Austenitic Stainless Steel benefit from superior strength and damage resistance inherent in this extra low carbon stainless steel.

New Generation Workwheels
® In order to optimize the performance of workboat wheels, in both open and ducted versions, Rolls-Royce has developed the New Generation Workwheel series. Designed to outperform conven-tional 3- and 4-blade standard series pro-pellers, New Generation Workwheels apply state of the art technology routinely used in the design of large, com-mercial and military propellers. The improved hydrodynamic performance of the New Generation Workwheel results from state of the art hydrodynamic design codes which are applied in both design and off design operating conditions.
The use of 5 blades not only reduces propeller-induced vibration levels, but also increases the thickness/chord ratio of the blade section. This makes the blade sections much less sensitive to cavitation when operating in uniform inflow common to workboats. The given non-linear skew distribution provides the hydrodynamic equivalent of 36 degrees of non-linear skew while maintaining the structural strength of an unskewed propeller. This feature, combined with the 5 blades, assures a propeller which reduces vibration levels approximately 50% below traditional workboat designs.
The customized new technology blade sections significantly improve cavitation performance and reduce blade area which contributes to improved propeller efficiency. In addition, the new blade sections incorporate a flat pressure face for ease of manufacture and repair. Sophisticated structural finite element analysis and generous blade edge thicknesses insure structural integrity of the new blade design. The end product is a propeller that delivers opti-mum cavitation and vibration performance while maintaining the structural and maneuver-ing characteristics of a standard series workwheel.

Kaplan type
The Kaplan propeller is designed for installa-tion in a nozzle on vessels engaged in trawl-ing or towtrawl-ing operations. A Kaplan nozzle system offers fishing boat and work boat owners maximum economy and efficiency with considerable fuel savings and increased bollard pull of up to 40%. Because of the increased performance char-acteristics of a Kaplan nozzle system, these propellers must be custom sized in accor-dance with the vessel’s design and power specifications. The Kaplan is available in
three, four and five blade configurations. 40 3.75 284 691 327 880

Pacific type
The Pacific type propeller is usually supplied for freighters and fishing boats where nar-row blade area and large propeller diame-ters are essential to maintain efficient opera-tional characteristics. The blades of the Pacific type propeller are raked aft in order to gain greater clearance between the blade tips and the hull, thereby minimizing vibration problems. The Pacific type pro-peller can be furnished in either constant or graduated pitch specifications.
Above weights are based on estimates. For weight-critical projects, consult factory. Anti-singing chiseled edges are applied as standard on all five blade propellers and offered as an option on three and four blade designs.

The Atlantic type propeller is a conventional constant pitch design. It can be provided in graduated pitch if required. This type pro-peller is generally supplied for fishing boats, work boats and other commercial applica-tions where maximum propeller diameter is limited and greater blade areas are required. The Atlantic type propeller is typically supplied with aft rake to maximize propeller diameter, but is also available in a ”no rake”design.

The Type B propeller blade’s leading edges, with semi-airfoil section, maintain top vessel operational efficiency while reducing the vibration problems inherent in conventional three and four blade propellers. They can be manufactured in either four or five blade configurations with graduated pitch.
