Computer and Internet Usage
Questionnaire
Within our Comenius School Partnership project entitled "Recipe for 21st century life" we
wanted to survey teachers’ and students’ habits of using computers and the Internet.
We created an online questionnaire –
http://tinyurl.com/internetsurv
– and asked both
students and teachers at each school to answer the questions.
Altogether 360 students and 19 teachers from six partner schools were involved in this
project task.

Background information
The distribution of genders among the pupils was almost equal: 179 boys and 181 girls filled
in the form. However, that is different among the teachers: there were 15 female and only 4
male teachers who responded the questions.

The ages of students varied. The youngest respondents were 9 years old, the oldest ones were
16. Most of the respondents were 13 years old.
The ages largely depend on the type of school the students study at. In England and Cyprus
they are at elementary level, while in Norway and Slovenia the students are older. In the Czech
Republic and Hungary both younger and older ones completed the questionnaire.
The diagram of the teachers’ age shows that most of the responders are in their thirties,
though in Hungary they are over 50.

The answers to the question ‘
Do you have a computer on your own?
’ show that the most
students who have a computer are at Nattland skole (Norway). They are followed by the
Slovenians, while in England and Hungary the same percentage (64%) has a computer. Though
almost the same aged pupils attend the English and the Cyprian schools, the number of children
who have a computer is almost the double at Lewannick School.
Having a look at the diagram below we can see that most of the students’ families have one
or two computers at their homes, however, there are ones with none or more than 10.
Nearly all families have Internet connection at their homes.
As for the teachers, all of them have a computer on their own and they have Internet
access, as well. The number of PCs they have at home varies from 1 to 5.

The type and frequency of the activities are different at each school. It is most probably due
to the diverse ages and interests. However, it is clearly visible that
blogging
and
creating a
website
are the two actions the students almost never do.
The most common and frequent activities with the older students are using social networks
such as
,
chatting
and
listening to online music
.
The Hungarian and Czech students use the Internet for
School preparation
and
searching
for information
the least.

Most of the teachers use the Internet for school preparation, searching for information and
writing e-mails. They occasionally chat on Facebook, watch online movies or listen to online
music. However, they hardly ever blog, create a website or play. It sometimes happens that they
purchase something on the web.

Time
The diagrams below show how much time the students spend on using the computer. On
weekdays the English children are on the computer the least, while most of them use it for 1-2
hours a day. However, almost one third of the Slovenian students are in front of the computer
for more than 4 hours.
At the weekends the hours spent on the computer increase, but not with the Slovenian
children. It is very interesting that while on weekdays 31% of them spend more than 4 hours on
the computer, only 9% do that at the weekend. It may mean that they are involved in outdoor
activities.

In the holidays the number of hours varies differently at each school.
As for the teachers most of them use the computer usually for 0.5 to 2 hours.
According to the chart below we can see that the Cyprian children are the most trustful ones.
Only one quarter of them have ever neglected their duties because of working or playing on the
computer, or being on the Internet.

Emailing and chatting
Almost half of the children do not send e-mails at all. It means that they do not use this
function of the computer.
Teachers more often do that, but they do not send more than 30.
The diagram shows how much e-mails they get.
The teachers typically get 11-30 e-mails a week.
