ANNUAL REPORT 2006 – 2007

Mr. Ramesh Ramanathan, Co-founder, Janaagraha, Dr. (Fr.) Terence Farias, SJ, Rector, St. Joseph’s Institutions, Fathers, Sisters, members of Staff, Parents, Alumni, Guests and my dear students.

The academic year 2006 –07 began on a very positive note. The staff and the students were happy to note that the College was rated as the eighth best College for Commerce studies in India and the best in Karnataka by INDIA TODAY. The acclaim and commendations the College received motivated the staff and the students to prepare for the NAAC Re-Accreditation. In keeping with NAAC guidelines, after the first accreditation the College established an Internal Quality Asurance Cell (IQAC) to monitor the quality enhancement initiatives of the institution in terms of academic programmes and development. The IQAC through its subcommittees has been quite successful in implementing a culture of benchmarking and overall quality assurance. The Peer Team was on the campus for two days, interacting and taking feedback from all the stakeholders of the institution. The result was the College being awarded A Grade. I am grateful to Mr. Ravi Richard, the coordinator of IQAC for his scholarly approach in preparing, writing, and presenting a well appreciated Self Study Report; and the staff who assisted him in implementing the IQAC recommendations and completing the Re- Accreditation process successfully.

The year 2006 was declared by NAAC as the year of student participation in

quality enhancement. In keeping with this theme, the students of our college

took initiative to organize a national seminar on “Emerging Contours in Higher

Education – Exploring Excellence”. I congratulate all the staff and students who

worked hard in organizing the seminar and hope academic events like this will

inspire the students to look beyond their curriculum and make them aware of the importance of research.

CONCLUSION:

The new building has become functional from this academic year. The long cherished dream of a Business Lab has materialized and the campus has become wi-fi-enabled. Seventy-five more computers have been added to the computer lab. The College building now houses all the required infrastructure facilities to conveniently manage and run different programmes and courses, so as to keep pace with academic growth and modernization. I hope the students with proper guidance from their teachers make appropriate use of our infrastructure for their academic enhancement. Our duties and responsibilities towards the student community have increased all the more after autonomy. Today Commerce education needs to be highly sensitive to the technological advancement in the realm of business. The assimilation of the state of the art technologies by business has created an array of opportunities for wealth creation and employment. In this context, the future of commerce education calls for paradigm shift in the teaching learning process and curriculum design. Autonomy provides us scope for experimentation, and innovation. There are immense challenges ahead of us in our quest to become an institute par excellence.

But I am sure, with God’s grace, the loving care of our patron St. Joseph, the

constant support and encouragement from parents and staff, we will gain

strength to move forward and face the future with confidence. We will strive to

(17)

impart quality education to our students without compromising on values and principles, before they go out into the society. We will also try, never to lose sight of our primary mission i.e., to be at the service of the deprived and the underprivileged sections in the society, to uphold the hallowed tradition of Jesuit Education.

I would like to conclude by congratulating our prizewinners. They have made us proud. We are greatly indebted to the Provincial Fr. (Dr.) Vijaykumar Pabhu, SJ and our Rector Fr. (Dr.) Terence Farias, SJ, for their guidance and encouragement. I also thank our staff, who are an indispensable part of our institution, and have made the College what it is today.

May God Bless us all
