Justin Martyr, Philosopher and Martyr

June 1 has been set aside on the Episcopal Calendar (also by the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox church- es) to honor an early Christian Saint. Justin Martyr was born around 100 AD in Samaria, the middle part of Israel be- tween Galilee and Judea. His parents were pagan and probably Greek. Justin was well educated in the Greek manner and studied various schools of philosophy in Alex- andria and Ephesus. While in Ephesus, Justin was im- pressed by the Christian martyrs. It is believed that Justin be- came a Christian in Ephesus after meeting a Christian man walking along the seashore. Justin believed that pagan phi- losophy, especially Platonism, is not simply wrong, but is a partial grasp of the truth. He engaged in debates with Christians and non-Christians. He opened a school of Chris- tian philosophy first at Ephesus and later in Rome, and ac-

cepted students. After debating a pagan philosopher Justin was arrested by the Roman authorities for practicing an unauthorized religion. When he refused to renounce Christi- anity, Justin was put to death by beheading along with six of his students. A record of the trial, known as The Acts of Justin the Martyr, has been preserved. Justin died on June 1, 165 AD.

The Humane Society of NW GA, located in Dalton, is looking for volunteers and hope you can help.

We adopt out 700-800 cats and dogs each year. Many of them before coming to us have struggled just to stay alive. Taking care of the 75-85 cats and dogs that we have at any given time requires 60 volunteer hours each day! We hope that you can tell your church members that we would love to have them join our volunteer team! We have three 3 hr. daily shifts to care for dogs and three 1 hr.

daily shifts to care for cats. To volunteer, they can go to hsnwga.org and fill out a volunteer

application. Thanks for your help-our cats and dogs thank you too!

The Birds Want Suet!

Suet is the white beef fat.

They used to give it away but now you can’t even buy it in most stores. I used to put it in mesh bags you got with onions and dangle it from a tree limb for the birds in winter.

Somebody started to make little metal mesh boxes to hold the suet a n d t h e n s e v e r a l companies made suet cakes to go in the holders. Suet cakes are much better than the plain suet which melts in warm temperatures. The suet cakes are made with suet, peanut butter, grain and seeds. You can even buy cakes with cayenne pepper that the birds will eat but squirrels won’t.

Suet is high energy food. Remember your health class. Fats have more than twice as many calories as carbohydrates ( sugars and starches) and protein. I used to put suet out only during winter until I read that woodpeckers needed it in the spring to feed their babies. I don’t know what’s going on this year but I have more birds eating suet than ever before. They have eaten 10 suet cakes in less than 2 weeks! In past years in the spring I have seen woodpeckers, mockingbirds, thrashers, and chickadees. I’ve seen all of those this year and some parents have brought their newly fledged babies to the feeders. But I have also seen wrens, house finches, cardinals , and even a pair of mourning doves!

These eat seeds from the feeder but I’ve never seen them eating suet. A friend even saw a robin at her suet feeder, and I’ve never seen that before. The squirrels are also eating suet but since there are only 2 of them I leave them alone. Once squirrels have eaten all stored nuts they eat buds, mushrooms and even bird eggs. So buy some suet cakes and see who comes to feed.
