Yes,theyhave.

And,surprising ly,we sayit again today.

You are livingin the time of the end - at the close of an age.

But, where do we get off telling you we are living in the endtim ewhe n people ha ve beensaying the same thing forcenturies?

Aft er all, we cou ld practically fill a room fu ll of old an d ancient books about predictions of the end of the world. As the story goes: "There have always been people who have said that." There have been people wandering around in religiou s and astrological cir cles talking about

"the endof the world" from tim e immemorial.

Hispessimist ic diatribe isoften referred to as a "Jere- miad ." The ter m means " ...a prolonge d lamen t ation or complaint by one who ispessimistic aboutthe presen t and who foresees acala mitous future." This defin iti onis ta ken fr om a misunderstanding of the Old Testamen t prophet Jeremiah.

Others Believed It Too

Not justthesu n ke n-eyed"prophets ofdoom" believed the end of the world was near. Many types of othe r indi- viduals in everyage believed it too.

Some thought that the world sure ly cou ldn't go beyond 1,000 A.D.

Therewas the Blac k Dea th in Europe, the many me- dieval wars, mech anized warfare, the in dustrialan d socia l revolu ti ons of the 1700-1800's. All were tho ug ht to sign al th eendof theworld.

And sometimes very sin cere religious organizations have set spec ific dates and ha ve had entire church mem- bersh ips believing those dates signaled the end of the world.

Perhaps the most famous was in 1844-45. Notice an encyclopedia account:

In 1831 [William Miller] began to lect ure, arguing that, the"two tho usan dthree hund reddays" of Dan- iel viii.14 mea n t 2300 years, and that theseyears be- gan with Ezra's going up to Jerusalem in 457 B.C., and therefore came to an end in 1843, and urging his hearers to ma ke ready for the finalcoming of Christ that year.. .. In spite of disappointment, many still

believed with him that the time was near (Encyclo- paedia Britannica,Vol. XVIII, p.465,1911 edition).

In the time of the early church it was generally be- lieved that the fall of the Roman Empire meant that the end of the age was near. Tertullian'sApology records the following statement:

We know that a mighty shock is impending over the whole earth - in fact, the very end of all things threatening dreadful war - is only retarded by the continued existence of the Roman Empire.

But Rome fell and Christ didn't come. And He didn't

come in the Middle Ages, orin the time of the Cr usades, or evenby WorldWar1.

So, all these peoplehave something in common. They were all wrong. Not one of them was right. The end of the worldhasn't com e yet. We're still going along on a kindof disequilibrium. But, going alongnevertheless.

Yes, all suc h individualshave ended up wit h "egg on their faces,"because their prophecieshaven't come to pass, much to the delight of a generally cynical and sardonic public.TheworldIS still here.Andso are th e"pr ophet s of doom"!

World Leaders Predict Impending Catastrophe But thegen erallaughterhasbeen dyingdown as the world getssh a kier. Theworld,it seems,is getting nervous.

Many are beginning to shift uneasily in their once com- fortablesea ts ofcyn icism.

Why ?

Because new andprestigious voices are chim in g in - the chorus grows lou der ! Now learned and dignified men of scien ce and representatives from the hallowed halls of learning around the world are adding their voices to the frantic shrieks of impending catastrophe. World leaders are saying mankind's days are numbered unless we solve the problems of war, overpopulation and th e destruction of our life-sustaining environment.

For example, Dr.George Wald, a Nobel Prize win ner and professor of Bioche mistry at Harvard, recently said,

"Civiliz ation will endwithinfifteen to thirty years unless immediate action is ta ken against problems now facing mankind, especially pollution, overpopulation and thepos- sibility of nuclear war." It is "utterly mean ingless and bankrupt,"he says,"to believe that merely increasing food production will answer th e problem of a growing popu- lation."

Dr.Herbert F.York, former chief scientistof the Pen- tagon, after describing the destructive power of the la t est weapons of war, warned that "u n less th e nations agree to an arms rollback, ourciviliz a tion is doomed."

And in his inaugural address, the late President

These are sober men of science and sea soned world statesmen talking. Not wild-eyed fanatics walking aro u nd in togas and open-toed sanda ls with signs on their backs.

N E VER BEFORE IN HISTORY

H

I~TORY has a~ways had it s skeptics. This generation

ISno exception.

In spite of the pressing realities of pollution, overpopulation, ever-escalating wars and the constant threat of new conflicts, growing rebellion of youth, the breakdown of world morality, the looming spectre of planet-wide disease epidemics and a host of other life- threatening problems - somehow these "optimistic" ide- alists feel the "grea t er good in human nature" will some- how prevail! Everything will be all right. Somehow we'll weather the storm. There'll be a brighter day tomorrow and the sun will arise on a peaceful, deliriously happy,uto- pian world of harmony and plenty produced by the twin godsof science and human rationalism.

These skeptics scoff at Biblical prophecy. Wars,fam- ines, and disease epidemics are nothing new to them.

"Such catastrophes have always been with us," theyclaim.

Earthquakes and other natural disasters occur in cy- cles and are based on the "law of averages," theyassert.

So when someone can't believe that anyone in the 1970's would be so in credibly unaware, uneducated, un-

scientific, and unintelligent (other than a Bible-belt fun- damentalist ) to think in terms of the literal (not figurative) "end-time generation," "last days," "great trib- ulation," etc., we must understand his feelings. As a mat- ter of fact, Peter prophesied of precisely this approach in II Peter 3:3-4, followed by a powerful description of what would happen thereafter. But if someone can't see it yet, it's not his fault.

- W e fully admit that it takes a certain amount of per- ception and savvy to scan through the usual news reports of local murders, national politics and international gossip and to be able to locate, collate, and correlate the signifi- cant happenings of our time. Then to go further and to un- derstand what the trends mean when projected forward into the future takes a mind well-versed in Biblical prophecy.

The Proof

Thereisone statement in the Bible that is beyond re- futation. In the year 1975 it stands unequivocably above the convenient ploy of academic argument.

(15)

Itis a short comment in a long prophecy.Itis a simple declaration that Jesus Christ made in answer to His dis- ciples' direct question: "What shall be the sign of your coming, and of the end of the world [age]?" (The original Greek word isaion, meaningAGE - not the physical earth on which we live.)

Itmust have sounded utterly absurd to that small au- dience about 1940 years ago.It sounded just as absurd to an audience about 41 years ago, in 1934,when Mr. Herbert W.Armstrong (Pastor General of the Worldwide Church of God) first began to preach it to the world.

Yet suddenly, some 11 years later, in the year 1945,it began to make sense. Today it makes full sense. Today, everybody knows. Today, right now, it is being repeated across the length and breadth of the United States and on around the world. Scientists and heads of governments

alike are proclaiming it. And as they do, they are unwit- tingly"usurping" the responsibility of the theologian. Be- cause what they are in fact doingisparaphrasing Matthew

First examine James Moffatt: "Had not those days beencutshort, not a soulwould be saved alive.. ."

Then, the Ph illips translation :"Yes, if thosedays had not been cut shortno human beingwould survive."

And fina lly, The New English Bible: "Ifthat time of trou bles were not cut short,no living thing could survive."

Thosewordscould never have begun to be understood in correct con t ext until 1945 when the first Atomic Bom b burst upon an unsuspecting world. At that time,we began to becom eaware of the vast potential of science and tech- nology to erase human, animal, and plant life from the fa ceof thisear t h .

For the First Time

Neverbeforein historyhas man been able to literally exte r m in a t e eoery human being on earth. Not just a large part of the enemy's army, not even most of the opposing civilia n population - but every last man, woman, and childon earth: in Ca n a da , Australia and South Africa;in Honduras, Peru and Chile; in Indonesia, Southeast Asia and Korea; in Manchuria, Iceland and Antarctica - all over theworld.

We've all heard the gruesome statistics that there are enou gh nuclear weapons stockpiledright now to kill every humanbein g 5, 10, 50- or isit now 150timesover?

When are the nations going to decide they've stock- piledeno u gh?

Conse rva ti ve estimates show that the world nuclear sto ckpile is equiva len t to 50,000 megatons of TNT. But, more recently, Ameri can Nobel Prize-winning scien t ist Dr. Linus Pauling estimat ed that there were 500,000 megatons in the world nuclear stockpile. Reduced to sim ple terms, this would mean th e explosive force of 150 tons of TNT for every person on earth.

So,we may have reserved for ourselve s our own little

"150 tons of TNT," when one tiny portion ofone st ick of

(19)

Never Before In History 19

.dynamite would be suffic ient to kill anyone of us. In one

sense, it really doesn't matter how muc h overkillthere is.

Itdoesn't matter that we've got enough nuclear weapons stockpiled to obliterate 50 worlds. There aren't 50 worlds ofhuma ni t y. There is onlyone- OURS.

And so, why overkill? Why kill somebody more than once?

We can't help but agree with one well-known British official."Once wouldbe quite enough"was the way he put it.

Additional Gruesome Statistics

Then, in addition to finishin g everything off, the world would be made so radioactive that no living thing, human or otherwise, cou ld survive. And all of this was be- fore MIRV - the Multiple, Independently-targeted Reentry Vehicles - whichmultiply the number of nuclear bombs that every ballistic missile can car ry from one to threeto ten!

When the first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiro- shima on August 6, 1945, the military commander of that B-29 bomber had the power to destroy one medium-size city.Today, a scant twenty-eight years later, the military commander of a nuclear submarine - still just one man, remember- wields the power to obliterate over 150 large cities. (Each submarine carries 16 Poseidon missiles and each missile has 10 or more nuclear warheads.)

Thi nkof it! Nuclear-armed Russian submarinesprowl the Pacific and Atlantic. Their computers are whirring and clicking away as they change courses on pre-assigned paths in the sea. And anyone of them could obliterate over a hu ndred large cities.

The Ultimate Weapon

"T h er e have always been 'ultimate weapons,' " retort

the skeptics. Axes, bows and arrows, gunpowder, rifles, cannons, machine guns, tanks, etc.,are all brought up as

"pse udo-ultimate weapons" of the past.So how can we in God'sWork be so surethat nuclear weapons arereallyTHE

ultim ateweapon - whic h they mustbe if we are to prove thattodayis theend time?

(20)

20 Is This the End Time?

Good question - with a very simple two-part answer: 1) No other "ultimate weapon" cou ld ever kill every human being on earth. Nuclear weapons ca n . 50 times over! (How muchmore "ultimate" ca n we get?)

2) Nuclear weapons work by exploiting the most fun- damental physical law in th e universe - the equivalence and interconvertibility of matter and energy . The hydro- gen bomb works the same way the sun works! All future

"ultimate weapons"could only be refinements of this basic process - th ey wouldst ill haveto work on thesa m e basic equation: E (energy) = M (matter) C~(the speed of ligh t squared).

WhatAbout Poison Gas?

Sooner or later this argument always comes up. It goes something like this: "Nu cle ar weapons will never be used. Each side, the UnitedSta t es or theSoviet Union, for example, knows that the other side has the same incred- ibly destructive capa bility. And in any nuclear excha n ge, the entire world (wh ich happens to include both sides) would be devastated. Consequ en t ly,this 'balanceof power' [or, moreaccurately, a "ba la n ce of terror"] will maintain the pea ce. Neither side would ever dare precipitate a nu- clear excha nge. A solid preceden t in th is regard was set during World WarII when both the British and theGer- mans had vast st ores of poison gas, but neither side used them because eac h knew the ret al ia t or y ca pac ity of the otherside."

Unfortunately , th ere are at least six fundamental rea- sonswhy theabove argumen t isinvalid :

1) Nuclear war by accide n t is a fri gh t ening reality.

Conside rin g the accumulation of nuclear weapons, the proliferation of cou n t r ies in the nuclear club, nuclear bombs inadvert en tl y dr opped fro m airc raft, the uniden - tified blips on radar screens, wron g messages flashed on wires, off-co urse missil es, etc., the sta tistica l "im prob- ability"of anaccid en t al nuclea r war is tragica lly nolon ger so "im probable."

2) The "ba la nce of ter ror" the ory is foun de d on the aXIOm that the.men in cont rol of every power, the men

(21)

22 Is This the End Time?

whosefingers rest on "the buttons,"are, ifnothing else,ra- tional. Now, while the great majority of world leaders today are indeed rational, we are not dealing with a demo- cra t ic procedure. All we need isoneirrational leader in one country which happens to possess a nuclear capability.

And then, even though all the rest of th e world's leaders are perfectly rational, this one man can trigger the feared ch ain reaction of a gigantic nuclear exchange. Do such men exist? Even recent history has seen national leaders who are mentally troubledcom e to power and quickly de- generate into becoming mentally deranged .Hitler would have used nuclear weaponshad Germany developed them in time. Other leadersof other cou ntries as well, distinctly paranoid in th eir thinking, cou ld indeed ch oose to use nu- clear weapons in some last-ditch, self-destructive,suicidal urge. Remember, nuclear holocaust doesn't require a ma- jority of worldleaders to bementally sick; it doesn 't even need two of the m .Oneis unfortunat elyquit esufficient.

3) An unauthorized nuclear attack , launched by a gr ou p of despera te and diabolical individuals withoutthe governmen t's consent, must not be discoun t ed in this age of rampant revolu t ion and irrati on al acti vism. Writing in Com mo n weal,Dr.Edward S. Boylan ,a mathematicianat Rutgers University and a consu ltant on strategicissues to the famous Hudson Institute "th in k -t a nk," poses the fol- lowingfrightening scenario:"S u ppose, for example, th at a civil war breaks out in Communist Ch in a , that rebels ca p- ture th e Ch inese ICBM weapons and that th ey threaten to at t ack the United Stat es unless it inter venes on their behal f. .. ."

4) Even morechilling istheprospect of an anonymous nuclear attack. Here an unknowngovernment could think to gain enor mous geographical, political and/oreconomic advan tage by triggering a nuclearwar between th e super- powers(or at leastby blackmailing one or more of them).

We again quote Dr. Boylan: "One can conc eive of a tense diplomatic crisis occurringbetweenth e United States and theSoviet Union. ACh ineseCom m u nist leader might seek to instigatea war between the two nationsby sendin g sub- marine-launched ballisticmissiles at New York or Moscow

(23)

Never Before In History 23

[or both] ... . In a simila r vein one can conceive of the Wh ite Hou se receiving an anonymous message that unless the UnitedStates stops supporting Israel one submarine- launchedmissilea week will destroyan Americancity. "

5) One na ti on might th ink that it could most effec- tively protect its own vita l interestsby a quick preemptive strike against any and all real or imagined foes. Such an attack would be designed to destroy the enemy's missiles in their silos on the ground.Ifsuch an attack succeeds , hal f the world-dies. Ifit fails - asit would - everybody goes!

6) We haven'tforgotten aboutthe poisongas analogy.

It is indeed crucial to the who le point. Let's go back to World War II. True en ou gh , poison gas was never used.

But had Germany launched her much-heralded invasion of England, that statement would no longer have been true.William L. Shirer, in his classic work,The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, report s that British plans called for the extreme all-out utilization of poison gas had con- ventional methods of defense failed - even th ou gh such action would have surely meant a brutal German retali- ation on the British civilia n population.

"Had the invasion been attempted th e Germans would not have been recei ved gent ly by the Brit- ish.. .[Peter Fleming in his book,The Sea Lion, says ] the British had decided...as a las t resort an d if all othercon - ventional methods of defensefail ed,toattac k the German beachheads with mustard gas, sprayed from low-flyingair- planes. Itwas a painful decision, take n not wit h ou t much soul-searching at the highest level ; and as Fleming com- ments, the decision was surr ou nded bysecrecy at the time and ever since" (William L. Shirer , TheRise and Fall of the Third Reich,Fawcet t Publica t ions,Inc., 1962,p.1030).

In other words, when the vital int er est s of a nation are being threatene d, whe n that nebulou s lin e "here and no further"iscr ossed, anati on will use every weapo n at its disposal to defend it self. And as more and more cou ntries acquire nuclear capa bilit ies, the numb er of "here and no further" lines likewise incr eases. Imagine Ind ia and Paki- st a n, Israel an d Egyp t , East and West Germany, North

Matthew 24:22

"And except those days sho uld be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those daysshall be shortened."

In this popular King James translation, the meaning of"saved" isambiguous.

What is meant by "saved "? Spiritual salvation? Or sim ply, as we have explained here, the preservation and con ti n u a nce of physi cal human life?Ifthis verse refers to the sp iritualcon dition of individual human beingsduring a certain period of history , th en the whole propheticsig- nificance would be lost. The original Greek can go either way.Theanswer must be determinedfrom the context.

And the context is very physi cal. The en t ir e twenty- fourth cha pter ofMat thewdeals with th e basicproblem of staying alive during wa rs (verse 6), famines, pestilences and earthquakes (verse 7), religious persecutio n (verse 9), great tribulation (verse 21), etc. Consequently as men- tioned before, more modern translations em phasize that Mat thew24:22 refersto the fact thathumanlifewould lit- erally be on thever ge of total annihilation- and this was to bea suresign that the last days ofthe end-time genera- tion had arrived.

Chapter Three

UTHIS GENERA TION SHALL NOT PASS u

M

E N HAVE been specu lating on the return of Jesus Christ for millenn ia. There were those in the lat- ter part of Paul's day who thought the return of Christ was immi nent. The apostle to the Gentiles had to warn the Ch urch in his day not to be deceived by un- fou nd ed and unrelia bl e information concerning the return of the Messiah. "And now, brothers, about the coming of ourLord Jesus Christ and his gathering of us to himself: I beg you, do not suddenly lose your heads or alarm your- selves, whethe rat some oracular utterance, or pronounce- men t , or someletter purportingto come from us, alleging that the Day of the Lord is already here. Let no one de- ceive you in any way whatever" (IIThes. 2:1-3,The New Englis hBible) .

Christ WILL Return

Butthereis no doubt that the Messiah will return to this earth to set up the everlasting Kingdom of God! The Bibl e is filled with prophecies describing the second com- ing of Jesus Christ.

Why?

PhotographerUnk nown

MAD DICTATOR ADOLPH HITLER. Could yet another such despotrise to master-minda plotof worlddomination ?

(28)

28 Is This the End Time?

Because the heart and core of the New Testament message concernsHISRETURNto this earth to set upa rul- ing, governing kingdom. That'swhat the true gospel is all about. "Gospel" is an old An glo-Sa xon word meaning

"good news." Today, the gospel (or good news) of the Kingdom of God is being preached and published. And that gospel is part and parcel of the second coming of Jesus Christ. (Ask for the free booklet What is the True Gospel?)

The very first message that ever came back fr om heaven - afte r Christbegan to ascend to God'sheaven- was that He was going to return to this earth.

In Acts 1:11,Christ's discipl es were told :"Men of Ga- lilee, why stand there looking up into thesky?ThisJesus, who has been taken away from you up to hea ven , will come in the same way you have seen him go" (The New EnglishBible).

This scripturealone is conclusive proof ofChrist's sec- ond com in g to this earth. But, read just one more, this time in the King James version . "So Ch rist was once of- fered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear thesecond time witho ut sin unt o salvation" (Heb. 9:28).

So the question is not whether He will return, but

WHEN!

Human speculation on this hascom e to nothing. The truth must be revealed. Thosesections of God's Word, the Bible, which revealfuture events are known as prophecies. Only those who ha ve been given special wisdom and in- sight by God are able to com preh end the meaning of prophecies and rightly use them. "...None of the wicked [those not living in God's right way of life] shall under- stand; but thewise sh a ll understand"(Dan.12:10).

Peter, referring to the Church, said , "We have also a moresureword of prophecy; whe reuntoye do well that ye takeheed .. ."(II Peter 1:19) .

Itis th ro u gh this "sure word of prophecy " that we can underst and the truth about the return of Jesus Chr ist . And the Bible revea ls that Jesus Chr ist islikely to return to set up His world-ruling kingdom in your lifetime and

(29)
(30)

30 Is This the End Time?

mine! (That is, barring any unforeseen termination of your life or mine!) Christ's return will likely occur in this very generation!

Itis entirely possible that YOU, as an individual, will live to witness this greatest event in contemporary his- tory!

But you say, "How can you be so sure? Aren't you sticking your neck out too far this time?"

Not at all! The answer is simple. Jesus Christ person- ally stated, "Veri ly I say unto you, THIS GENERATION SHALL NOT PASS, till all these things be fulfilled" (Matt.

24:34).

Moffatt has it: "I tell you truly, the present genera- tion will not pass away, till all this happens." Phillips translates: "Believe me, this generation will not disappear till all this has taken place."

Which Generation?

But how can we know Jesus is talking about OUR GEN·

ERATION TODAY? How can we be sure He wasn't talking about the generation ofHisday? Let's get our bearings.

Matthew 24 records what is commonly called the

"Olivet Prophecy." It is so named because it was on the Mount of Olives that the disciples of Christ came to Him and asked about the prophecies concerning His second coming and of the end of the world [age - verse 3].

The whole prophecy is about the age in which we live - this generation.

In answering the question about the end of the world, Jesus foretold a series of events that would intensify just before His return. He told about false prophets in this end time (verse 5). He talked about war and rumors of war, about world war (verse 6). He foretold famines, pestilences and earthquakes in different places (verse 7). (Most have been occuring for 2,000 years, but never as intense as today.)

Then Christ explained that this Gospel of the King- dom would be "preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the END come" (verse 14).
