August 8, 2021 Welcome to Trinity! 9 am & 11:11 am
Sermon: Bring Us Back to God: The Burn Romans 12:1; Ephesians 4:1-8(NIV)Rev. Chris D. Neikirk
Basic Theme: This series is based on a book by my pastor-friend, David Warren who passed away in June. In it he writes, “It strikes me that our frailty before the Living God can be a lot like my first experience with the ocean. Those who know Him intimately speak of His wondrous love and grace. They talk as if He is nothing but good. Yet, we often find ourselves trembling at the thought of real vulnerability and intimacy with God. This is natural because, let’s face it, God is scary. We intuitively understand that He is already aware of just how much we don’t deserve an audience with Him. We are painfully aware of our own insuf- ficiencies, our profane existence. How could a Holy God even stand to be in the same room with us, much less wrap us in His embrace? Yet this is the promise. There is an unceasing invitation from the throne for us to crawl up in His arms and rest in His love.” My friend, David, affectionately called God, Abba, which is the Aramaic word for Father that expresses a more intimate relationship. Abba more closely resembles the sentiment of our affectionate term, daddy. In the next few weeks, we are going to explore three prac- tices, or gifts, that help to facilitate a more intimate relationship with God – to Bring Us Back to God.
These three practices are prayer, worship and study, or “the Breath,” “the Burn,” and “the Bread.”
Sermon Snapshot (Key Points): Richard Foster defined worship as, “our response to the divine initiative” and also, “our response to the overtures of love from the heart of the Father.” For the church, worship seems to have become more about the gathering than the One for whom we gather. Worship seems to have col- lided and combined with our faith to the point that going to church has replaced being the church. Wor- ship is intended to praise God as an affirmation of our faith. “Worship is about listening to the Spirit who is drawing us to Christ who leads a righteous and uproarious march toward our Father’s lap.”
So What? How is it with your soul? Do you have an intimate, close, personal relationship with God? Did you at one time, and yet, that is no longer the case? What changed? How is your “worship life?” Could a more intentional effort to “worship with reckless abandon” be the catalyst to Bring You Back to God?

ALL TOW
ORSHIP (based on Psalm 42)Leader: As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God.
People: My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?

People: By day the Lord directs his love, at night his song is with me — I offer a prayer to the God of my life.
Leader: Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.

We would like to continue that service in some way as the pandemic subsides and more people are vaccinated. This will be a re-organizational meeting to get input and ideas as to how we can best do this in the future. You do not have to be a member of Trinity to help. If you are interested and cannot attend, please contact Jan McCauley-812-948-5055 or Phyllis Wright 812-246-9111
