(3) From Fr. Mike’s Desk God speaks .... When we read the Book of Genesis, we see that God communicates with key people directly. He speaks to Adam and Eve, even when He is expelling them from the Garden of Eden. He speaks to Cain after he kills his brother Abel, and God speaks to Abraham when He calls him to leave Ur and to go to the Promised Land. God continues the conversation when He makes His covenant with Abraham and his descendants. God also communicates directly with Jacob. After Jacob, it appears that God does not directly communicate with His people until He calls upon Moses to rescue the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. God comes to Moses in the Burning Bush, without consuming the bush, and there is no doubt that Moses is experiencing the presence of God. As the Book of Exodus continues, God communicates with Moses and the people. As we see in today’s first reading, God communicates in the Book of Deuteronomy, as we see, the people are upset over this, for they are afraid of God. God for His part, gives into this request, but He does not leave it at that! He tells them that He will send them a prophet from their own people who will speak like Moses and speak totally in God’s name. When this prophet comes, all should listen to him. As we see, “Whoever will not listen to My words which he speaks in My name, I Myself will make him answer for it.”. The people were afraid and begged God not to let them see Him talking to Moses, the same is not true of the people in today’s Gospel, as they see the promised prophet driving demons out of a man. The people in the Capernaum Synagogue were more amazed and realized that Jesus spoke with the authority God promised in Deuteronomy. Jesus would not allow the demon to identify Him as the Holy One of God, yet Jesus did not stop the people from spreading the news. This is because Our Lord wants human testimony to spread the word, so others would be ready to listen to Him when He spoke. We, too, should not be afraid, yet we should be totally amazed and accepting of His Divine Authority. Jesus is indeed the Prophet that God was speaking about in Deuteronomy, He is one like Moses and He speaks totally in God’s name so we must pay attention to what God says above. So listen to His words and spread the Good News. What more is there to say! Please take home a copy of the bulletin. There are many things of interest and you will find something for everyone. See the notice about the upcoming Catholic School Week. Chances are available for the next Crown Club drawing in February. There’s information about our pantry needs and what’s going on with the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Find out about the upcoming fun events at Harvest House, and ticket information for the Knights of Columbus Recognition Dinner in February, and much, much more. Keep a copy of the bulletin at home for quick and easy reference.. God bless you always! Fr. Mike.
