Intro to Jazz.net (http://jazz.net/)

First a few questions: who here has…

 heard of Jazz.net?

 visited/registered at Jazz.net?

asked a forum question or opened a bug report at Jazz.net?

 What’s this presentation about?

Introduce the Jazz.net web site and explain why we created it

Explain how you can use Jazz.net to learn about Jazz and Team Concert and collaborate with the Jazz team

 Demo Jazz.net

 Ask for your Jazz.net feedback

Talk about the future of Jazz.net

Jazz.net … from 50,000 feet

 Jazz.net is a web site that…

Provides information on the Jazz Platform and Rational Team Concert

Allows community members to download and try early access builds of Rational Team Concert and Jazz-based incubator technologies

(Incubator == interesting and useful technology that’s not quite ready for primetime)

Helps community members keep up to date on Jazz and Rational Team Concert news and development plans

Enables community members to interact directly with the

development team via forums and the bug tracking system

(4)

Why Did We Create Jazz.net?

First… where did we come from?

Many of the original Jazz project leaders were also project leaders on the original Eclipse project and Eclipse platform

The Eclipse effort resulted in both high-quality software and a

vibrant community of happy users and extenders, and we wanted to achieve similar goodness with Jazz

Unlike Eclipse, Jazz would be commercial software, but wanted to keep the transparency of open source; we call this transparency in a commercial context open commercial development

Also, since Jazz focuses on development teams and communities, we had a great opportunity to publicly “drink our own champaign”

and indeed give our community early samples

(5)

Why Did We Create Jazz.net? (continued)

This led to our two main goals:

1. Create a high-bandwidth, direct channel between the

development team and community to promote transparency in the development process and make new software available early and often

2. Enable community and potential customers to see how our

geographically dispersed development team uses Jazz technology

to successfully deliver software (Jazz and Rational Team Concert

themselves)

(6)

What’s so great about transparency?

Stakeholder perspective (not exactly rocket science)

Easy to file an enhancement request, defect report

Easy to subscribe to a work item to track its progress

Easy to follow a collection of work, via work item queries or iteration plans

Have direct, high-bandwidth interactions with the people actually writing the code and making the decisions

 Developer perspective

Good pressure – our commitments, problems, and successes are all visible

Direct interactions – input isn’t filtered, can’t hide behind layers of bureaucracy

Community support on common questions and issues

Diverse input – helps avoid groupthink

 Everybody perspective

Meet and build relationships with smart people with common interests

(7)

What’s available at Jazz.net (some highlights, anyway)

Used by development teams to communicate recent issues and decisions Mailing Lists

Reference information on advanced configuration and deployment scenarios Tech Notes

Used by development team to collaborate on new designs and jot down reference information

Development Wiki

Provides analysis of project/team health and trends

Project and team plans for the current and previous milestones Task and defect tracking – open a bug report!

Summary information on the project, teams, and individuals

Conceptual overviews, getting started guides, product documentation, white papers, presentations

Download early access builds of Rational Team Concert and Jazz-based incubator technologies

Ask questions to be answered by the Jazz development team and other community members

Development team members write mini articles with insights on how to use some capability or insights on why some capability is used as it is
