Yes, It’s All about the Money*

*and the Money is All about the Mission Fr. David Poecking (Pastor)

I steal the title of today’s column from Fr Vallone, whose verbal wit surpasses most mortals and occasionally rivals G.K. Chesterton. He off ered also, “We’re spending for failure, not growth.”

He’s right. If you count the three predecessor parishes of Archangel Gabriel Parish as part of our history, then for many years Catholics in our neighborhood have given about 0.4% of household income to AGP. That’s barely a third of the 1.1% that Catholics in the U.S. give to their parishes. It’s not enough to sustain our current operations, never mind fulfi ll our mission.

We’ve already cut nearly $500,000 off the budgets of our predecessor parishes. We could cut more—say, most of the staff and any programming beyond weekend Masses—and then, when our donor pool continues to shrink, we could close more churches and merge parishes again. We know where that leads: We’ve been closing churches, schools, and parishes for thirty years. It was for a while necessary, given demographic changes. But as they say, if we keep doing the same thing and expect a diff erent result, we’re crazy.

Instead, it’s time to reverse the trend. To fulfi ll its purpose, AGP needs $2,900,000 in annual off erings.

That’s a lot more than our current rate of $1,800,000, but it should be within reach: Were we even to reach the average for Catholic giving in the U.S., we’d far exceed our need.

Of course, many Catholic households don’t give, and we rely mainly on the third of Catholic households who are more reliable donors. So to get what we need, I’m asking our regular donors to commit to give 5% of their household income, hoping that AGP can reach an average of 2.5% among households that give regularly.

Of course, I don’t know your household budgets. Some of you have very special needs. I can’t tell you what to do, but I can ask you prayerfully to consider pledging 5% of your annual household income. If you can’t reach 5%, you could still pledge a lesser amount, and enroll in online giving (www.

ArchangelGabrielParish.org/give). And if you’re already at 5% and want to give more, I won’t refuse it!

You’ll hear more about this next week from other parish representatives, and you’ll have an opportunity to ask questions at any of three parish assemblies:

(1) October 23 at 5:15 p.m. at St. Malachy;

(2) October 24 at 8:45 a.m. at Holy Trinity;

(3) October 24 at 12:15 p.m. at St. Mary.

Let us together steward God’s gifts and mysteries to make missionary disciples for Christ and his Church.

FIRST READING — WISDOM 7:7-11 FIRST READING — WISDOM 7:7-11

I prayed, and prudence was given me; I pleaded, and the spirit of wisdom came to me. I preferred her to scepter and throne, and deemed riches nothing in comparison with her, nor did I liken any priceless gem to her; because all gold, in view of her, is a litt le sand, and before her, silver is to be accounted mire. Beyond health and comeliness I loved her, and I chose to have her rather than the light, because the splendor of her never yields to sleep. Yet all good things together came to me in her company and countless riches at her hands.

SECOND READING — HEBREWS 4:12-13 SECOND READING — HEBREWS 4:12-13

Brothers and sisters: Indeed, the word of God is living and eff ective, sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating even between soul and spirit, joints and marrow, and able to discern refl ec- tions and thoughts of the heart. No creature is concealed from him, but everything is naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must render an account.

GOSPEL — MARK 10:17-30 GOSPEL — MARK 10:17-30

As Jesus was sett ing out on a journey, a man ran up, knelt down before him, and asked him, "Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?" Jesus answered him, "Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments: You shall not kill; you shall not commit adultery; you shall not steal; you shall not bear false witness; you shall not defraud; honor your father and your mother." He replied and said to him, "Teacher, all of these I have observed from my youth."

Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said to him, "You are lacking in one thing. Go, sell what you have, and give to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me." At that statement his face fell, and he went away sad, for he had many possessions.

Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, "How hard it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!" The disciples were amazed at his words. So Jesus again said to them in reply, "Chil- dren, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for one who is rich to enter the kingdom of God." They were exceedingly astonished and said among themselves, "Then who can be saved?" Jesus looked at them and said,

"For human beings it is impossible, but not for God. All things are possible for God." Peter began to say to him, "We have given up everything and followed you." Jesus said, "Amen, I say to you,

there is no one who has given up house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands for my sake and for the sake of the gospel who will not receive a hundred times more now in this present age: houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and eternal life in the age to come."

O blessed Archangel Gabriel, you announced our salvation to the Virgin Mary. Pray for us that we may be courageous and compassionate, strong and faithful followers of her Son, Jesus.

RESPECT LIFE MINISTRY - ARCHANGEL GABRIEL PARISH

PUBLIC ROSARY FOR AMERICA

The Public Rosary for America will be taking place on Saturday October, 16th at 12:00 PM – on the lawn between the Holy Trinity Rectory and Rt. 60. This Rosary is in reparation of our sins, the conversion of America from its moral decay and to honor God publicly. In the last few years there have been over 21,000 Rosary Rallies held across the country.

CHOICES PREGNANCY SERVICES VIRTUAL BABY BOTTLE CAMPAIGN

Baby Bott le Campaign will occur October 3rd – 24th. All funds go to support Choices Pregnancy Services in their support of women with troubled pregnancy and their abstinence programs taught at high schools. 79% of abortion-minded/abortion vulnerable women who receive services at Choices choose life after seeing an ultrasound image, seeing their baby’s heartbeat and talking with a counselor who helps them consider the support and alternatives available to them. Choices off ers free services at clinics in Coraopolis and Beaver Valley, and also serves women in numerous locations including Planned Parenthood with two state-of-the-art mobile clinics operating in Pitt sburgh and Beaver County. Please support this life affi rming organization by going to pages.fundeasy.com/5360426. Last year, $2800 was collected from our generous parishioners through this eff ort.

40 DAYS FOR LIFE

Respect Life thanks those that prayed at the 40 Days for Life Vigil on September 25th, in front of Planned Parenthood or from home for the end of abortion. The vigil continues daily from 7am – 7pm, through October 31st. You do not need to be scheduled to go. These 40 Days are set aside for prayer, fasting, peaceful vigil and community outreach.

PENNSYLVANIA MARCH FOR LIFE

On September 27th, Father Joe and 5 parishioners from Archangel Gabriel att ended the PA March for Life on a bus that left from St. Thomas Moore. Over 40 people were on the bus including 3 beautiful special needs young people. The pro-life politicians and inspiring speakers at the event seemed awed at the crowd size as they said they had never seen one that large at the state capital before.

Our goal was to encourage our legislators to protect babies in the womb as other states like TX and Mississippi are doing. We don’t want Pennsylvania to become an "abortion destination." Additionally, the speakers said they hoped our presence would send a message to the PA Supreme Court that Pennsylvanians DON'T want court-ordered taxpayer funding of abortions through state Medicaid. Thanks to all that came to Harrisburg or dedicated some prayers for this cause from home.

CHOICES NIGHT FOR LIFE BENEFIT BANQUET

Please join us at the Choices Pregnancy Services "Choices Night for Life Benefi t Banquet" on Thursday evening, November 4th, doors open at 6:15 PM. This annual banquet is their major fundraiser for the year. The speaker this year is singer/songwriter Mark Schultz , who will present his story and the story of Choices through song. Hyatt Regency Pitt sburgh International Airport 1111 Airport Blvd., Pitt sburgh, PA. Dinner is complimentary. An opportunity to make a fi nancial gift will be extended.

Please register by October 29th at htt p://www.choicesnightforlife.org and select "Archangel Gabriel

(Sharon)" as your host OR contact Sharon Graham at [email protected] or 773-972-6657.

Edge

Through the Mass, the grace of Christ’s life, death, and resurrection are made present to us. This week at EDGE, our middle schoolers got a closer look at that mystery with a church tour and a time for prayer in front of the crucifi x.

Life Teen

Last week at Life Teen we talked about why God allows suff ering and how He heals us when we suff er. We had a chance to adore Christ and ask Him for healing. This week, we’ll fi nish our series on the controversial Christ by talking about his promise of the Kingdom of God and what that means for us.

Catechesis Update

Steve Swank (Director of Faith Formation)

Our fi rst in-person Family Catechesis sessions for the Matt hew and Mark sections took place on September 26 and it was great to be back together in-person! To begin each session, the families gathered in the cafeteria where we prayed together. After prayer, the children went upstairs with their catechists to their classrooms while the parents stayed in the cafeteria for a presentation on the mystery of the Trinity and small group discussion. At the end of the sessions, the children rejoined us for closing prayer. So many of the catechists told me how wonderful it was to be with their students again, and I enjoyed working with the parents. Thank you to everyone who helped Fam Cat get off to a great start!

RCIA MINISTRY

Patty Sampogna (RCIA Ministry Leader)

We have entered into the period of catechesis for our RCIA Candidates and are beginning with a focus on the sacraments of the Catholic Church. In additional to catechesis, each Monday evening session also includes a time of prayer for our Candidates to learn about diff erent types of Catholic prayer and to deepen their personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

Concurrent with our RCIA catechesis we have two adult Confi rmation Candidates completing their own sacramental preparation. Any adult Catholics who have received their other sacraments but are seeking Confi rmation are welcome to reach out to me at any time.

Please pray for our RCIA Candidates: John Allan, Bruce Thompson and Susan Wuenstel.

Please pray for our adult Confi rmation Candidates: Mike Lewicki and Abby McHugh.

Contact Patt y Sampogna at [email protected] AFTER-MASS SOCIAL MINISTRY

Natasha Sutt

My name is Natasha Sutt and I am the new lead for the After- Mass Social Ministry. My family and I are relatively new to Archangel Gabriel Parish, having become offi cial parishioners last September. Originally from New York City, I came to Pitt sburgh to study at Carnegie Mellon, went on to study law at Duquesne University, and never left. I currently run my own law practice and my husband, three children, and I currently live on the Pitt sburgh/Ingram border.

The After-Mass Social Ministry is extremely important to me as I believe unifi cation of our parish is crucial to its success and longevity. Although social events are by no means a reason to come to Mass, it can’t be denied that if people who need connection come to our parish and leave feeling lonely, they will not come back. Parish involvement is also important for the next generation to see that we want them to belong to the Church in the future. The best way to ensure that our children stay in the Church is to SHOW them that it is important to us.

This ministry is one way to do that. If you are willing, I need

your help! If you’re able to volunteer 2 hours of your time each

month to help people feel connected to our parish, please email

me at [email protected].

Today our students cleared out the garden using the remains as compost getting the ground ready for new provisions in the next season. The students learned what joy they can experience by blessing others. Thank you Coraopolis Community Center for allowing us to become a part of your community!

Much of what we teach at AGS is to model Christ-like

behavior, which includes showing kindness and thinking of

others. In the social/emotional skills lesson, our

Kindergarten class learned the importance of being a good

friend. While this is extremely important no matter your

age, it is especially important in Kindergarten. They learn

that we are each special, and we have to be kind and

accept each other. Our five and six year old’s are now in

class with students which they will most likely be with until

High School and beyond, therefore it is extremely

important to remember these skills. Students were asked

to create an anchor chart that they may refer to

throughout the year which includes: sharing, saying nice

things to one another, taking turns, being patient, listen,

and just smile. They each even created their own Forky

(from Toy Story) as he represents a good friend.
