SECTION 9 - SLIP LINING PIPELINES
9.01.00 GENERAL
Slip lining is a technique used to renovate an existing pipeline by inserting a new pipe usually of a smaller diameter, by pushing or pulling it into the existing pipe and grouting the annulus between them.
9.01.01 SCOPE
Specified in this section are requirements of slip lining of existing pipelines generally, including but is not limited to the following:
•
flow diversion and temporary works• traffic management
•
excavating entry and exit pits•
pipe lining fabrication, storage and placement•
service connections, connecting to access chambers and make water tight•
Grouting•
other specific structural works•
testing•
reinstatement9.02.00 MATERIAL
Suitable pipe lining materials are HDPE, MDPE and UPVC. Contractor may specify other material for consideration by the Superintendent.
Use clause 2.04 – joints, of general specifications – pipe works.
Grout to comply with AS3600. Use cement and water at a water cement ratio of 0.5. If blockage with pumps is a problem Contractor may use additives such as Methocell. Obtain prior approval before using any additives.
9.03.0 CONSTRUCTION
9.03.01 REQUIREMENTS
Provide all necessary plant, equipment, material and labour for carrying out the slip lining activities.
9.03.02 EXISTING SERVICES
Locate existing service connections using closed circuit television (CCTV) method or using sonde and mark them on site. Carry out the necessary excavation to verify their locations.
9.03.04 PIPE JOINTING
PVC PIPES
Solvent welded pipe joints are permitted. Ensure pipe pushing or pulling apparatus does not cause shattering or compression of the new pipeline.
POLYETHYLENE PIPES
Butt fusion weld all pipe joints to Australian Standard AS 1159. Remove both the internal and the external beading around the pipe joint caused by the welding.
9.03.05 BYPASS PUMPING
Maintain the flow in the system during lining by bypass pumping or flow diversion. Submit details of bypass pumping or flow diversion to the Superintendent for approval.
Stopping of the live flow and storing in the pipeline may be permitted only if there is sufficient storage in the upstream pipeline that will prevent overflows, flooding or blockage of the system. In such cases, provide detail of the length of time proposed for stopping flows. In any case stopping of live flow is permitted for a maximum of 8 continuous hours and thereafter the drainage system must be put back into operation. Give one week notice to the Superintendent, so that the affected public can be notified.
9.03.06 PIPE LINING
Submit details of the pipelining plan to the Superintendent for approval. Include in the details at least the following:
• Type of mechanical head to be use,
• Application pressure,
• Length of pipe to be install per day,
• Impact of any vibration on adjacent buildings,
• Storage requirements
• Environmental issues such as noise, vibration and how they will be minimised,
• Calibration details of measuring devices,
• Safety aspects, and
• Any temporary works proposed
Carry out the pipelining operations as approved by the Superintendent and in accordance with the drawings. Stop pipe-cracking operations immediately and take direction from the Superintendent if any of the following occurs:
• surrounding structures show signs of cracking or vibration
• pipe lining tool goes off-line
• incomplete insertion of new pipe
• flooding of the system due to blockage
Arrange for storage of materials and plant with the property owners, if the work is located within the property boundary.
Provide adequate traffic management in accordance with Special Conditions of Contract Clause S9.0, if the work is located on roadways.
Minimise the impact of disturbances to buildings and property owners. Reinstate the site to its existing conditions and obtain satisfactory written clearance from property owners and the Superintendent ( Use form 596).
On completion of the pipelining and the installation of the new pipe, inspect all access chambers. Make the connections of the new pipe and the access chambers watertight by using approved sealant. If mortar is used, it should comply with AS3600, Clause 19.1.11. Maximum shrinkage allowable is 1% by volume.
9.04.00 CONNECTIONS
9.04.01 SERVICE CONNECTIONS
Reconnect all service lines to the new pipeline as identified by the CCTV survey and in accordance with Standard Drawing 7600 series.
Property connections or adjoining mains are not to be out of service for more than 8 hours. If this is not possible, temporary connections are to be made at convenient locations, as approved by the Superintendent.
9.04.02 CONNECTIONS TO EXISTING NETWORK
Reconnect all new works to the existing network in accordance with Section 4.03.00 - Drainage.
9.05.00 GROUTING
Carry out grouting of the annulus between the old and the new pipes using grout specified in Clause 9.02.00. Submit to Superintendent details of grouting technique and verification methods to be used for approval prior to commencement of grouting.
9.06.00 TESTING
Provide CCTV equipment and inspect pipeline after all connections have been reconnected. Submit the CCTV surveys to the Superintendent for approval.
Field test the pipelines as directed by the Superintendent and in accordance with Section 4.02.00 – General Specifications, Drainage.
9.07.00 MEASUREMENT FOR PAYMENT
Payment shall be based on the Schedule of Rates as tendered for the contract. The following units of measurement shall be used in the preparation of the Schedule of Rates if lump sum prices are not required.
a) Pipe material is measured in linear metres. Include all items in accordance with Section 2.07.00 - Pipe Works.
b) Slip lining is measured in linear metres. Include in the rate the supply of all plant, equipment and labour including all CCTV, temporary works, bypass pumping, jointing and positioning the pipeline in its final alignment and testing.
c) Entry pits and exit pits are measured by cubic metres. Include in the rate the cost of excavation, backfilling and support if required. Excavation in rock if encountered shall be measured for payment in cubic metres separately.
