Reflecting on the

Gospel

This Sunday's feast is a "repeat" of what we celebrated just a few weeks ago on Holy Thursday. Jesus does something entirely new and unimaginably significant: he gives himself-his very Body and Blood-to us as our heavenly Food. This is the mystery we celebrate on Holy Thursday and this Sunday. This gospel, however, gives us a different context and some different details that move us deeper into the mystery. How confidently does Jesus send his disciples "into the city" to prepare for their celebration of Passover! How wondrously does God provide for the unfolding of salvation! The identifying sign for the man of the house where they would

Welcome

Our Mass Schedule

We will continue to live-stream many of our Masses on our parish website and parish YouTube channel. Effective May 28, 2021, N.J. Gov. Phil Murphy lifted the mandates requiring the wearing of masks and social

distancing. Yet, recognizing that the COVID-19 pandemic remains active, wearing a mask is an option for those who wish to do so. The clergy and faithful should use their best

judgment to protect their own health and the health of their neighbors. Moreover, those who are not fully vaccinated are strongly encouraged to wear a mask. Reconciliation will resume in the confessional rooms.

Visiting our Parish Offices

and Schools

Our Parish and School Offices have reopened. Our parish is open from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm Monday through

Friday. The office is closed for lunch from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm. St. James Elementary School Office is open 8:00 am to 3:00 pm and Red Bank Catholic High School Office is open 7:30 am to 3:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Please note that during the pandemic the number of visitors present in the

offices at one time will be limited; a mask covering nose and mouth must be worn at all times while in the schools. Visitors will need to complete a brief questionnaire. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding during these challenging times.

A Message from Msgr. Joe

Welcome Back! What great words to hear! In my first message as your pastor, I shared my firm belief that as Church: we need one another, we need the sacraments, we need to learn so that we will not allow the world with its short comings,

challenges and injustices to deceive us of the fundamental reality that God desires our joy and happiness—a joy and happiness that we only can experience in our communion with God and communion with one

another. With the increase of vaccines and efforts of mitigation, we can now return to familiarity in our Sunday Worship. Welcome Back! Your parish family missed you and we can't wait to see you in person! I can't wait to meet you!

Having concluded the fifty days of Easter time on Pentecost, last Sunday we celebrated the Most Holy Trinity, God’s self—revelation to us as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Today, we

celebrate Jesus’ gift of self to us in the

Eucharist, the Living Bread by which we are nourished. In the Eucharist, we commemorate the perpetual sacrifice by which we are redeemed. Jesus’ Real Presence among us is a comfort on our pilgrimage and a challenge to self-sacrificing love.

As we celebrate this great gift, the Eucharist transforms us to become that which we received, namely the holiness of Jesus through whom we become daughters and sons of God. It is for this reason that Vatican II taught us that the Eucharist is the source and summit of who we are as Church. All we do and teach finds its source in the Eucharist and leads us further into the mystery of the Eucharist. As the People of God we become the Body of Christ as we participate actively, fully and consciously in the Eucharist. Our identity is intimately linked to the Eucharist; from it comes our identity. A great gift of Jesus to us indeed! After the liturgical reforms of the Second Vatican Council, the Holy See

published Holy Communion and Worship of the Eucharist Outside Mass in 1973. This document teaches that by worshiping the Eucharist outside of the Order of Mass, we are continuing the celebration of the Eucharist in many different ways and for different reasons. It is helpful to remember the original purpose of Eucharistic

reservation was for viaticum

(communion at the time of death) and communion for the sick. Later in history, the devotional practice of adoration waiting for the Lord’s return, became another important reason to reserve the Eucharist. The Church recognized the significance of extending worship, staying or retuning after Mass to spend more time in prayer with the Risen Christ. People responded strongly to the question Jesus himself asked his disciples in the Garden of Gethsemane: So you could not keep watch with me for one hour? Just as time and presence with one

Reflecting on the Gospel

(continued from cover)

have this meal with Jesus was "a jar of water." Our own identifying sign as disciples is the waters of baptism, marking us as belonging to Christ and his mystery. The room where Jesus would celebrate the Passover with his disciples is described as a "guest room." Guest rooms are not where we are at home-they are transition rooms, temporary quarters, gifts of another's generosity. We are always "guests" in God's accommodations. We are to stay only temporarily, to move on from one place to another, from one person to another to witness to God's mighty deeds of salvation. God's gifts to us are not so we can settle in, stay put, become inert. God's gifts always impel us to move on, to spread the Good News, to "pass over" into someone new.

Jesus wants to "eat the Passover with [his] disciples." This annual festival celebrates the Jewish people "passing over" from lives of slavery and

drudgery in Egypt to lives of freedom and abundance in the Promised Land. This meal portends another passover-Jesus' own passing over from suffering and death to risen Life. Through our baptism we enter into Jesus' mystery of dying and rising. And yet another passover: our passing over from old self to new self, from life of sin to life of grace.

Each Eucharist, each time we eat and drink the Body and Blood of Christ, we embrace anew our passing over to new Life in Christ. Each celebration of the Eucharist is a passover for us. It celebrates our plunging ever more deeply into the paschal mystery, into Jesus' passing from death to risen Life. It celebrates our embrace of the new identity baptism first bestows on us and Eucharist celebrates and nourishes: that we ourselves are

members of the Body of Christ. As Jesus continually gives himself to us in the mystery of his Body and Blood, so does Eucharist call us to the same self-giving.

The covenant God made with Israel and sealed through the sprinkling of the sacrificial animal blood was a relationship with God in which they were to hear God's word and keep his commandments. Now, rather than being sprinkled "with the blood of goats and calves" (second reading), we drink the Blood of the risen Lord and by that action seal our new covenant

with God. We are still to hear God's word and keep his commandments, like of old, but now something else is added: we ourselves are to take up God's redemptive work as we conform ourselves more perfectly to Christ and continue his self-giving ministry. Our everyday living is preparation for sharing in the Eucharist and receiving eternal Life. We sprinkle among the people with whom we live and work little acts of self-giving, sealing our relationship with them and with God. This is how we "worship the living God" (second reading): by self-giving.

Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

First Reading: Exodus 24:3-8

Moses explained to the people the commandments he had received from God. Upon hearing them, the entire

community immediately agreed they would do as God had told them. Moses then sacrificed young bulls and sprinkled the people with their blood, calling it the blood of the covenant they had made.

Second Reading: Hebrews 9:11-15

Jesus did not offer God the blood of sacrifices, but instead he offered up his own blood to cleanse all people of the transgressions they had committed under the first

covenant with God. Christ instead brought a new covenant, which, if kept, would lead to eternal life.

Gospel: Mark 14:12-16, 22-26

Jesus sent two of his disciples to prepare the Passover supper. During the meal he blessed bread and offered it to them saying, “This is my body.” He then offered them wine and called it his blood, “the blood of the covenant, to be poured out on behalf of many.”

another after a great meal continues beyond the consumption of food. We do the same with the worship of the Eucharist outside of mass, when we bring our remembrances of the Mass, the liturgical season, the scriptures and songs, our petitions—all reminding us of heaven and earth united in liturgy, all in a special

devotional harmony that leads back to the Lord’s Day Eucharist.

I pray that as we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, as a parish family we

will experience time in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament in the

tabernacle, as opportunities for us to grow in our appreciation of the strength and grace we receive. We are our best as Church, when we celebrate and live the Eucharist. We are a Eucharistic Church!

I wish to express my appreciation in advance of your warm welcome to Fr. George as we welcome him to our parish this weekend for our

participation in the annual Missionary Cooperation Program in the Diocese

of Trenton. Our participation is an extension of Church and begin the Mystical Body of Christ in the World today continuing the mission of Jesus. Finally, I hope that you will be able to join of this Sunday for our Eucharistic procession. This tradition procession with the Eucharist is a visible sign that we are called to live the Eucharist and to bring the effects of Christ saving work to the places where we journey. God Bless and have a good week, hope you are able to enjoy the nice weather!

Receive

Awards

On Monday evening, May 24, Red Bank Catholic

honored the extraordinary young men and women of this year’s graduating class at its Evening of Excellence: The Class of 2021 Senior Awards. The evening celebrated remarkable successes in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and athletics. The seniors and their parents were thrilled to be able to celebrate these

achievements together in an in-person ceremony in the Eck Center on the first day of senior week.

To begin the ceremony, pastor and school chaplain Msgr. Joseph Rosie offered a blessing and senior Grace Allison sang the national anthem. Over 150 students were honored with awards for their outstanding

athletes were also awarded their varsity blankets. Principal Mr. Robert Abatemarco, Vice Principal Karen Falco, and Director of Student Life Mrs. Meghan Rabasca offered their congratulations during the

presentations of awards and

scholarships. The evening concluded with the shamrock pin presentation, a special tradition in which the seniors are invited to present a shamrock pin to a teacher, friend, coach, or parent who has supported and encouraged them during their journey as Caseys. Much of the class of 2021 has been awarded scholarships, totaling over 31 million dollars. There are a special few scholarships that are awarded by members of the Red Bank Catholic community and presented during the Senior Awards ceremony.

The Ellen Cunningham Akmentins Scholarship was presented to Sophia Cahlane, Liliana Joslin, Ciara Mullaney, and Lauren Yu by the Cunningham Foundation for their future studies in the areas of education and

communications. These students were selected for their high academic achievement and overall participation in all aspects of high school life. After a selection process of scholar athletes, the Peter Paul Apollo Memorial Scholarship was presented to John O’Brien, in honor of Peter Apollo, a graduate of RBC who died tragically in 9/11 at the age of 26. Finally, Jordana St. Phard received the Gilda A. Scarpone Memorial

Scholarship. Sr. Marge Scarpone presents this award each year in honor of her mother, a true advocate for excellence in education. The award is for a graduate of Sisters Academy who has distinguished herself during her four years at Red Bank Catholic.

RBC's popular Green & Gold Sports Campus have added an Alumni Football Camp for the summer of 2021. The camp is open to grades 3 to 8 and will be held on July

Summer Programs Return

to RBC

While students may enjoy some time off during the summer months, RBC faculty members and coaches keep campus buzzing with various opportunities in sport camps and academic enrichment courses. The pandemic halted many programs last summer, but with the declaration from the governor that summer camps were safe for the summer of 2021, Red Bank Catholic has reintroduced all of its summer offerings. Multiple faculty members participate in RBC's academic Summer Enrichment Program with offerings in many different areas. Those offerings include academic development, capstone research for social science, college essay writing, dance

workshop, mixed art and media, summer theater, algebra intensive, trigonometry and precalculus. There's something for everyone!

The RBC Green and Gold sports camps have returned as well with offerings in baseball, basketball, football and a new alumni football camp which will include coaching from RBC alum and Indianapolis Colts offensive lineman

Quenton Nelson.

RBC Rolls Out Virtual

Campus Tour

Red Bank Catholic is thrilled to

announce the addition of a 360 degree virtual campus tour! The tour is self-guided and utilizes camera and navigational technologies made common in Google Maps. Userscan enter multiple buildings to tour classrooms, computer labs, athletic facilities, athletic fields, fine and performing arts spaces, our chapel and church. The addition of this campus tour allows Red Bank Catholic to stay a cut above in providing current and prospective families access to our campus during the ongoing COVID-19 Pandemic. While the RBC Admissions office still offers (and encourages) COVID responsible in-person campus tours, the addition of the virtual tour adds another component to provide the best possible user experience for all current and prospective constituents.

Athletic News

Information about tryouts and Summer workouts is located on the RBC Athletic website at www.redbank catholiccaseys.com. Please note that each season, student-athletes are required to complete athletic forms for participation in athletics. All required athletic forms are completed on a secure online system called "Athletic Trainer System" (ATS). The instruction on how to complete this process can be found on the Red Bank Catholic Athletic website. All incoming freshmen will need to create their own account. Please contact Athletic Trainer, Lauren Barry at barryl@red bankcatholic.com for more info.
