International experience and

Mobility service (IeMs)

IEMS is Coventry University’s dedicated service

that supports students’ international experience.

Whether you are interested in studying abroad

or would like to gain some work, volunteering or

teaching experience in Europe or beyond, IEMS is

here to make it a reality.

Students have a chance to work with

organisations that aim to make a social impact

through the Intrapreneurship at CU (I@CU)

scheme launched as part of the Social enterprise

for Employability Development (SEED) project.

International students can also be supported

in gaining work/work-related experience in the

UK. Through the UK Work Experience initiative,

postgraduate international students in the

University can get access to short-term and

long-term graduate placements opportunities;

Those already working also get a chance to

showcase and develop their skills to enhance their

competitiveness in the job market. This includes

the opportunity to enhance their employability and

showcase the skills they have attained through the

Advancing Student Skills Employability Training

(ASSET) programme.

Students work in group sessions and individual

appointments to prepare them for the graduate

placements and in order to match them to

opportunities available, both during their

studies and for as long as they need it following

graduation. This includes training on professional

skills, UK work culture, CV checks, and

employability training. Reflective practise which

is a mandatory requirement within ASSET, gives

Students who go through the ASSET programme

are awarded with a certificate upon completion.

Additionally, postgraduates who go through

the ASSET programme will also be able to gain

points towards the Global Leaders Programme

Feedback from past students has been very

positive and many have indicated that they valued

the chance to relate and enhance the skills gained

through doing a real piece of work.

IEMS will guide and mentor students at every

stage and funding is available notably from

sources including the European Union’s Leonardo

Da Vinci programme and Erasmus – in fact,

between 2011 and 2012 Coventry University

about Coventry

The City of Coventry is proud of its reputation as

a world leader in peace and reconciliation. This is

reflected in the cultural diversity of the city and the

welcome it extends to visitors. Coventry attracts

thousands of visitors each year, but it is also a

university city and as such offers a wide range of

cultural and social opportunities. There are plenty

of restaurants, sport centres, cafés, the Belgrade

Theatre, an ice-rink and a multi-screen cinema

complex. For visitors who are keen to see the

surrounding areas of the city, Warwick Castle,

Stratford-Upon-Avon and Coombe Abbey are all

Image courtesy of Stratford Upon Avon District Council

Coventry was established in 1043 with the

founding of a Benedictine Abbey by Leofric,

Earl of Mercia and his wife, Lady Godiva. By

the thirteenth century it had become a centre of

many textile trades and its non-fading ‘blue’ cloth

became highly sought after throughout Europe.

Coventry had become the fourth largest English

city by the fourteenth century and on several

occasions became the ‘second capital’ of England

with parliament moving there. Coventry continued

to thrive and in the eighteenth century enjoyed an

industrial boom, which led to a massive expansion

in its population.

In the twentieth century, Coventry had become

a centre of the British motor industry, but it also

suffered massive devastation during World War

II when many of its historic buildings, including

the cathedral were bombed. After the war the

city was rebuilt, and now it is undergoing more

transformation and regeneration in order to create

the City

Coventry is a lively, multicultural city with a rich

history embracing the old and the new. Nowhere

is this more evident than in the Cathedral Quarter

where the modern architecture and ancient ruins

of the two Cathedrals dominate cobbled streets

lined with bustling cafes and restaurants. Walk

through Coventry’s pedestrianised city-centre

and you’ll see over 1,000 years of English history,

ranging from the medieval charm of historic Spon

Street to the architectural innovation of Millennium

entertainment and Culture

Expect world-class entertainment in Coventry.

Some of the biggest names in music, including

Coldplay, Take That, Oasis, Pink, Beverley Knight,

Kings of Leon, Bon Jovi and Rihanna, have

performed at the Ricoh Arena and nearby National

Exhibition Centre (NEC) to sell-out crowds.

Coventry’s music credentials are well documented

thanks to home grown talent such as 2-Tone

band, The Specials and rock band The Enemy.

As well as open-air concerts, there are cultural

festivals, continental and farmers’ markets and a

range of music and dance events, Coventry is also

sport

There’s plenty on offer for sport lovers too. The

Ricoh Arena is home to the city’s football team

and is also a major entertainment venue for the

Midlands. Thousands of visitors flock to the Arena

for major sporting events including Rugby Union’s

Heineken Cup, the Women’s Football FA Cup

Final and it will be a venue for the 2015 Rugby

World Cup. The Ricoh Arena is also an Olympic

venue, hosting early rounds and the Bronze final

for the London 2012 Olympic Men’s Football

Tournament. The Butts Park Arena is home

to Coventry Rugby Club who play in National

League 1. For those who prefer the rink to the

pitch, Coventry also has a successful ice hockey

team, the Coventry Blaze, who regularly play at

Planet Ice in the Skydome complex. In addition

to this, the campus couldn’t be closer to the city

sports centre, which is home to the Olympic-sized

swimming pool.

MSc Accounting & Financial Management “All the lecturers are professional and experienced. Most of them used to work or still work for blue chip companies,

therefore using real cases to explain theories, thus making it easier for students to understand and know how these theories are used in the real world. The other fantastic thing Coventry University offers is a possible 3 month internship which provides more of an advantage to students after they leave university to look for jobs.”
