FAMILY EDUCATIONAL RIGHTS AND PRIVACY ACT (FERPA)
Texas Lutheran University complies with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974.
This act is designed to protect the privacy of a student’s educational records and the right of a
student to his/her records. The Student Handbook and the TLU Bulletin both describe the policies
that govern maintenance of and access to a student’s personal and academic records. The policy
permits disclosure of educational records under certain limited circumstances and routine
disclosures, at the University’s discretion of information defined by the University as directory
information. Texas Lutheran defines directory information as the following: name, address, phone
number, major, minor, photo, participation in sports, height and weight of athletes, degree
candidacy, degrees and awards received, number of registered hours, classification, academic
honors, dates of attendance, campus email address, photographic/videotaped images, and
previous colleges attended. You have the right to prevent the disclosure of directory information
by filing a request in writing in the Office of Registration and Records on the Request to Prevent
Disclosure of Directory Information form (which is available in the Registrar’s office). Such a
request is good for one semester only.
Texas Lutheran University assumes no liability for any actions or results that come from honoring
your instructions that the information be withheld.
Additional Schedule Information
General Education Requirements
Beginning fall 2012, TLU implemented a new general education curriculum. The new curriculum has 3 parts: foundation
courses, distribution courses, and competencies (and associated skills). Below are the requirements for each of the three
areas.
The Foundations (21 hours)
Basic Quantitative Literacy:
MATH 130 or higher
Critical
Reading:
FREX134
Engaging
Faith
Traditions:
THEO133
Modern
Language:
Any modern language at the 131 level or higher
Self-Awareness & Development:
PRWB130
Written
Communication:
COMP131 & COMP132
The Distributions (30 hours)
Arts
6 hours (with an attached competency) from the following: ARTS130, DRAM, MUSI, VART
Humanities
6 hours (with an attached competency) from the following: HUMA130, ENGL, GEOG, HIST, MAST, PHIL, WOST
No more than 3 hours can be taken in any one discipline
Natural Sciences & Math
6 hours (with an attached competency) from the following: NSCI 140, BIOL, CHEM, ENVS, MATH, PHYS, STAT
At least one natural science course must have a lab
No more than 4 hours can be taken in any one discipline
Professional
Applications
3 hours (with an attached competency) from the following: BUSI, COMM, CSCI, EDUC, ENGR, ISYS, KINS
Cultural Perspective & Religion
3 hours (with an attached competency) from the following: FREN, GREK, HEBR, SPAN, THEO
Social
Sciences
6 hours (with an attached competency) from the following: SSCI130, CRCJ, ECON, POLS, PSYC, SOCI
No more than 3 hours can be taken in any one discipline
For a course to count toward completion of a distribution, it must have a competency. For example, PSYC-131-01-P will count
toward completion of the Social Sciences requirement since it has an attached competency (Problem Solving). SOCI-238-01-G
would also count. PSYC-234-01 will not count toward completion of the Social Sciences requirement because it does not have
a designated competency. See below.
The Competencies
Through completion of the foundation and distribution courses listed above, and also through selected courses in their majors,
students will be developing important competencies. Course offerings designed to meet each competency will be identified in
the schedule of classes with a competency code attached to the course number. Throughout their course of study, students will
be required to take at least one course with each of the following competencies:
Advanced Quantitative Reasoning (Q)
Intercultural Global Knowledge (G)
Aesthetic/Expression
(A)
Oral
Communication
(O)
Civic
Engagement
(V)
Problem
Solving
(P)
Ethical
Reasoning
(E)
Scientific Literacy (S)
Inquiry & Analysis (I)
Competencies are identified in the fourth component of the course number. For example, VART-136-01-A is an Art
Appreciation course that meets the Aesthetic Expression competency requirement. Some courses can meet more than one
competency. For example, NSCI-140-01-IS is a Natural Science course that meets both the Inquiry & Analysis (I) and Scientific
Literacy (S) competencies. Some courses will not have a competency. For example, GEOG-331-01 is a Geography course that
does not satisfy a competency requirement.
Activity Modules
Activity modules stretch the educational experience beyond traditional academic boundaries by providing students structured
learning experiences outside of the classroom that help them advance toward achievement of the competencies. For more
detailed information and a meeting schedule for each module, go to the Student Life page of myTLU.
COCR 112 HELP! How Do I Study? (D) - Ever found yourself studying for hours only to do poorly on an exam, even though
you thought you were prepared? Maybe the strategies you use need some updating. This module will allow you to look critically
at how you currently study and it will help you develop better strategies for the more complex college environment.
COCR 117 Starlit Discussions (G) - This module develops the competency of Intercultural Global Knowledge. Specifically,
the student will attend all of the Starlit Discussion Series over the course of the spring semester. The topics of these focus on

or stressful if you get going early on! Learn how to choose a major and career path that are great fits for your personality. Craft a
resume, create online professional profiles, and learn to network in your area of interest!

website and find what you’re looking for the first time you Google it. Find it Fast will teach you about new tools and new search
strategies.
COCR 131 Sophomore Connection (P) - Sophomore Connection is a special program developed to guide sophomores
through the college decision-making process, connect with their peers, and help establish a sense of identity and pride during
the second year at TLU. Topics explored may include academic and career decisions, study abroad opportunities, community
service and an investigation of meaning, purpose and identity.
COCR 132 Got Your Six (D) - **Pre-Req – You should only take this module if you have previously been on active duty.

COCR 137 Number Sense (B) - This module will teach students number sense "tricks" for mental computations.
COCR 145 The Latino(a) Experience (G) - Who am I? Who am I in relation to others? It might be argued that everyone in
today's society struggles to understand and articulate their often multiple identities. This module will look at the diverse
experience of Latino's in the United States. Through sociological reading, media, stories, community and other relevant
perspectives student's will explore the social economic, cultural, and political issues that affected the Latino life. The module is
designed to be a highly interactive; requiring every student to participate in discussion.
COCR 146 Overview of Professional Nursing (D) - This module allows you to discover the nursing profession by attending a
workshop on nursing and getting you involved in the nursing simulation lab. This is a wonderful opportunity to discover if
nursing is right for you. You will be asked to complete a reflective writing assignment on if you feel the nursing profession is
right for you and, how you might work towards this career path.
Activity Modules Continued
COCR 147 Rebirth of the Dog Pound (D)
Be a part of the most spirited TLU group on campus. The rebirth of the Dog Pound will get the pride and school spirit flowing in
your Bulldog Blood.
COCR 149 Pathways to Silence (F) - Pathways to Silence is designed to deepen your spiritual practice through a variety of
prayer forms: art, music, body movement, and Scripture. Students of all faith backgrounds are encouraged to participate in order
to widen our understanding of the many ways God speaks. This module is designed for those who are open to new ways of
listening for God’s still, small voice.
COCR 151 Volunteer Income Tax Clinic (V) - ***Pre-Req: passing the IRS online tax qualification test.
Make a difference in the community by preparing tax returns for lower income residents of the local area. Gain experience
working with the actual clients and apply accounting to solve real world problems. The Clinic will be open Wednesdays from
5:00 to 7:00 p.m. and Saturdays 9:00 a.m. to noon. Volunteer for at least 10 hours to get credit for this module.
COCR 153 Diverse Worship Styles (F) - Diverse Worship Styles will introduce you to the many ways faith communities
express their beliefs in worship. Your attendance at chapel at TLU and 2 community worship services, equipped with a checklist
of patterns to observe, will lead to a broader understanding of why there are so many styles of worship. Don’t think you can
simply show up – this module requires your active participation in 2 small group discussion sessions to reflect on what you’re
experiencing in worship. All faith traditions and backgrounds welcome!
COCR 155 Basic Policing (V) - Thinking about a career in law enforcement, or just curious about how the men and women in
blue really work? Dispel media-driven myths and learn about the realities of basic policing. Completing this module will qualify
you to do volunteer work with the TLU police department.
COCR 157 Jefferson Elementary Tutoring (V) - Do you enjoy working with younger kids? We need you! As part of this
module, you’ll be partnered with a teacher at Jefferson Elementary to mentor and tutor students who need a little extra help.
TLU students need to be available at least 30 minutes between 8:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. on a weekly basis throughout the
semester. Have fun and be a positive role module for local kids!
COCR 159 Habitat for Humanity (V) - Ever wanted to be a part of building a house or make a difference in another person’s
life? Here’s your chance! Habitat for Humanity is an international organization with the belief that all people should have safe,
affordable housing. As a module, we will explore the importance of affordable housing, while getting our hands dirty serving at a
build site and at a Habitat Store
.
COCR 161 Coming Home (V) - The United States locks up more people than any other country in the world. On an annual
basis, hundreds of thousands of incarcerated people return home, including 70,000 per year in Texas. How can our
communities support these individuals in becoming upstanding citizens, overcoming significant barriers related to employment,
housing, and mental health? This module will provide participants with the opportunity to interview local Seguin churches and
community organizations to determine whether there is interest in developing a local, collaborative, prisoner re-entry program.
With the support of fellow students, each participant will facilitate one interview and also help present the cumulative findings to
the community.
COCR 163 Long Night Against Procrastination (P) - Help plan TLU’s first Long Night of Against Procrastination, an evening
to buckle down and work on papers and projects. The idea of the Long Night Against Procrastination started in Germany (where
it is called the “lange nacht der aufgeschobene hausarbeiten”)! Students gather in the library to work, and tutors and librarians
provide assistance and brain-refreshing activities. Module students will help organize and publicize the event. They will also
study the root causes of procrastination and ways to fight it.
COCR 165 Environmental Service Learning Module (V) - This module is for students interested in becoming involved in local
environmental issues through civic engagement. Students will participate in a creek cleanup event and other similar activities in
Seguin.
COCR 167 The TLU Water Bottle House (V) - The TLU Water Bottle House: Want to be involved in a unique experience that
will be around long after you graduate? Come help us build a house out of plastic water bottles. This structure will serve as an
important gathering point for the TLU community and will house stories of current and former students, employees, and
members of the Seguin community. To see how we will be building, watch this video:

Community Engagement Courses
Community engagement has been integrated into the following courses. Please check the actual course listing to see whether
the course is taught to the level of the civic engagement competency (designator V) or simply includes involvement outside of
"normal" class parameters.
BUSI 372: Advertising, Dr. Alicia Olson
Students in this class will work on an advertising project with real-life implications for a local nonprofit organization. The class will
be divided into teams, and each team will develop ideas and make a pitch to the client. Some class time will be dedicated
toward the civic engagement project; students will also need to find common time when their team and client organization can
meet for collaboration and follow-through.
COMM 236: Public Relations, Professor Sarah Story
Students will gain a real life PR agency experience a la AMC's "The Pitch" by creating a PR plan and pitch for one of TLU's
7-minute faculty lectures (similar to TEDTalks). Students will learn how to identify target audiences, craft key messages and use
various communications channels to promote their project. They will also assume the role of PR agency employees as they
make a formal pitch to their client – select TLU faculty and staff. The winning pitch will be used by TLU Marketing & Admissions
to recruit prospective students to campus.
COMP 132 (sections .01, .02, and .06): English Composition II, Professor Beth Barry
Students will complete a Write to Serve project, which gives them an opportunity to share their writing with middle and high
school students in the surrounding community.
EDUC130: Intro to Teaching Middle & High School, Professor Carol DeHaven
Students in this course will spend time assisting teachers in Seguin ISD classrooms. Community engagement will happen
outside of meeting time for this class but during normal SISD school hours.
ISYS 133: Applications Software, Dr. Rodrick Shao
Students will respond to Seguin’s Digital Divide by promoting computer literacy. Using classrooms on campus, TLU students will
work with and answer questions from community members related to operating systems, application software and Internet
technology.
ISYS 232: Business Spreadsheet Applications, Dr. Sam Hijazi
During class time, students will work one-on-one with community members in a TLU computer lab to help them maximize their
use of spreadsheets for business and other purposes.
KINS 232: Adapted Physical Education, Dr. Casi Helbig
Students will lead fitness and adapted physical education for intellectually disabled adults from Mosaic of South Central Texas.
As a result of this course, students should be able to write lesson plans, conduct learning and fitness activities to groups and
individuals, and be able to work with populations of varied age and ability. The service component of this class is mandatory and
will happen during class time.
KINS 377: Early Childhood Motor Programming, Dr. Casi Helbig
Students will be paired with a preschooler from Faith Lutheran Preschool. The TLU student will write lesson plans and lead the
preschooler through a movement program during class time that will last approximately two months.
SOCI 232: Social Problems, Dr. Corinne Castro
The class will be divided into five groups and will dedicate the entire semester working on a chosen social problem such as
domestic violence or food insecurity with a corresponding community partner. Each student is required to complete 10 hours of
service for a non-profit organization by the end of the semester, as well as complete a collaborative research project tailored to
fit the needs of the community partner you will be working with. Background checks are mandatory for all students enrolled.
SOEN 379: Empathy for Social Change, Dr. Alicia Olson
Students will develop their empathy skills by interacting with varying populations and areas of social needs. Examples of the
interactions include working with the homeless population at Haven for Hope, working with Hospice patients at GRMC and care
centers for adults with learning challenges. Students will be required to take several field trips outside of class time but there will
be flexibility in accommodating the student’s schedule.
