Adaptive Optimization

Simple workload acceleration

Intelligent sub-volume auto-tiering

• Adaptive Optimization uses all capacity of the underlying storage

subsystem

• Relies on “Adaptive Optimization capable” storage systems with two

user-designated tiers: Tier 0 (faster) and Tier 1

• Supports virtually any storage option on VMware and Windows

Hardware Compatibility Matrix

• Recommended tiering options: SSD/SAS, SAS/MDL SAS

• HP recommends 10-15% of the total capacity in an SSD/SAS mix

configuration to be SSD

• Volumes are configured with either “Adaptive Optimization permitted”

or “Adaptive Optimization not permitted”

Adaptive Optimization

Simple application acceleration

• Tier 0 is always ~100% utilized

• Granularity is a single LeftHand OS page (256 kB)

• Each storage system continuously maintains a heat map

about the pages and moves data accordingly

• A page is moved to Tier 0, if Adaptive Optimization is permitted on

the volume and the page is more frequently accessed than other

pages in tier 0 on the storage system

• A page is moved out of Tier 0, if the page is less frequently

accessed as a page in tier 1 on the storage system

• In addition to access counts there is also a threshold that is used

to prevent thrashing

• Disabling “Adaptive Optimization” on a volume will cause

pages to be gradually moved to the lower tier

NEW – Veeam API for LeftHand

individual file recovery from VMDK

(20)

What does Veeam Data Protection Software do?

Hyper-V and VMware Backup & Recovery

Runs on Windows (VM or Physical)

Hardware-agnostic Backup to/Recover from CIFS or NFS

Compression/Dedupe at the source

API Integration VADP, VSS (log truncation)

Hyper-V and VMware VM Replication

Hardware-agnostic VM-level replication

HP Storage Integration

Reads StoreVirtual and StoreServ Snapshots

Recover from HW Snaps (Veeam Backup Free Ed)

(21)

Veeam Explorer for SAN Snapshots

What is it?

New capability in Veeam Backup and Replication 6.5

Restore from a SAN snapshot through the Veeam backup console

• Point in time copy created by the storage system

(22)

Veeam Explorer for SAN Snapshots

What it isn’t …

A separate product (it’s part of Veeam Backup & Replication)

Available for Hyper-V (it’s VMware only)

Available for any SAN (it’s HP StoreVirtual SAN only)

Replacement for Veeam disk-based backups

• SAN snapshots are great for “operational” recovery

Very low overhead

Protection against daily disasters (user deletes data, script corrupts data, system update goes wrong,

…)

• SAN Snapshots are NOT backups

They offer no protection against storage failures

Never store your backup with your production data

(23)

Veeam Recovery

How it works

1. From the VEEAM UI, a command to the SAN is

initiated through the API

2. The SAN issues a clone of the requested

snapshot

3. The clone is promoted to an active LUN

4. The LUN is mounted on the vSphere host and a

re-signature operation occurs

5. Veeam initiates the recovery operation

6. Post-recovery, a cleanup command is issued to

the SAN to delete the promoted snapshot

Deduplication – What is it?

HP StoreOnce cleverly eliminates duplicate data to reduce the amount of backup data

to be stored on disk

– Compares blocks of data being written

to the backup device with data blocks

previously stored.

– If duplicate data is found, a pointer is

established to the original data.

– This removes, or “deduplicates,” the

redundant blocks.

– HP D2D Backup Systems allow unique

data to be compressed following

deduplication and prior to storing to disk
