Message from the Admin Team

Greetings from Riverside’s Admin Team;

It’s been another busy month at Riverside, as we work through this unique year and prepare for next year. We are now in Quarter 4 with about 7 weeks left before year-end. In the busy months ahead, we are looking forward to a celebration of the Graduates of 2021, and excitedly awaiting more news on vaccinations.

Since our last newsletter, we have seen a big improvement in the traffic jam issue in front of our school. Thank you to parents who are now dropping off their children a bit further from the building.

Also, thank you for the ongoing support for our COVID protocols and the Daily Health Check, both of which help prevent any transmission of the virus here at school.

In this newsletter, there are some very important sections that all parents should take the time to read. Although we also use email, the app, and Instagram… the newsletter provides a more detailed description of upcoming events and

initiatives. Happy Spring!

-- Mr. J. Bruneau, Ms. S. McKay, Mr. J. Giles, Mr. JJ Hyde

Grad 2021

Below are a list of dates and events that we have planned for our Graduating class of 2021. While

we understand that this is not a typical graduation/commencement, we need everyone to follow

all the rules. The safety of all involved is our number one priority and we appreciate your support

in making this happen. A huge thank you goes out to the members of our parent after-grad

committee, especially to our co-chairs; Christina Braun, and Birgit Giesser, for putting a lot of time

and effort in fundraising for the Grad gift/swag bag. Ms. Chin, our teacher Grad sponsor, has put

in an immense amount of time and effort with the kids throughout the year to try and make this

graduation as special as possible….Thank you.

1) Friday, June 18th: each grad will be given their Cap, Gown, Tassel, and Stole. We will send out

more details as to the process, but most likely given out in their Block 5 class. For those students without a block 5, we will have another process. Remember, they get to keep all 4.

2) Monday, June 21st: This is the day that we video the kids crossing the stage. Students will have

scheduled appointments, in alphabetical groups of 30, every 30 minutes or so. A schedule will be sent to everyone by the second week in June.

Student Learning Survey 2020/2021

The Provincial Student Learning Survey is unique in its scope, size, and usefulness to schools.

It gathers information from parents/guardians/caregivers, teachers and students on topics

related to school environment, safety, and achievement. The information is used for planning

in individual schools and provides a district and provincial perspective.

Early in 2021 the Student Learning Survey will be administered to students in grades 10 and

12, their parents/guardians/caregivers, and all school staff. We encourage

parents/guardians/caregivers to participate in this survey, as the results are important in

identifying and celebrating current strengths, as well as determining where the school needs to

focus improvement. The surveys contain standard questions for the Province in addition,

questions from the school and/or district that focus on local conditions or issues may be

included.

The survey can be completed electronically and can be accessed on the Internet at

http://www.bced.gov.bc.ca/sat_survey. This link can also be found on the Riverside website.

Any computer with an Internet connection can be used, and access to the e-survey is simple

and secure. The survey can be accessed through the link with or without an anonymous logon

code by selecting the school district and school name where your child attends school.

Provincial, District and School Reports for previous years can be viewed at the same site

under the Results section.

The e-survey site will be open until May-7

If you have any questions, please contact Ms. McKay at [email protected].

Riverside’s Art Department is pleased to announce the opening of our

annual Imaginings III Art Exhibition. In partnership with the City of Port

Coquitlam this important event celebrates the achievements of many

of our student artists.

The Art Departments in Riverside Secondary

School, and CABE have come together to feature the more successful

artworks of many of our Art students. This is the third year for this event, and

this year it is a virtual show to be enjoyed online. It features sculpture,

ceramics, drawings, paintings, prints, collages, skateboard graphics,

photographs and an animation film. While this list is extensive it provides a

terrific overview of the not only what is taught in the classes at both schools,

but also the imaginative application of the students’ skills and talents to

create these great works of art.

The

exhibition is titled “Imaginings”. Einstein said: “Imagination is more

important that knowledge. For knowledge is limited, whereas imagination

embraces the entire world, stimulating progress and giving birth to

evolution.” The art departments at Riverside and at CABE have as their

focus to stimulate the imaginations of the students and development their

creative thinking through the various art mediums and the projects taught.

A big shout out to all the students for their hard work, their creative minds,

their imaginative perspectives and their skills at manipulating their mediums

to create works that make us wonder and be awed.
