As believers in Christ as the Son of God, and the Bible as the inspired word of God, we:

▪ Glorify God through worship

▪ Build strong relationships in the church family

▪ Grow in the knowledge of the truth as revealed through Jesus Christ

▪ Serve people as a reflection of the love of Jesus Christ, and

▪ Spread the Good News of the Gospel so that others may come to salvation though grace

Worship Series

I have prayed by fits and starts, sometimes deeply, sometimes with struggle throughout my thirty years of ministry. I have always valued prayers, but, to be honest, I have not always acted like it. Sometimes I get busy, get thrown for a loop, get distracted. Bill Hybels wrote a book, Too Busy Not to Pray, but sometimes, to my own detriment, I push prayer to the back burner. You too?

In the past five years, in one of the toughest ministry settings I have ever been in, God, through this crucible, taught me to pray. I was led to 24-7 Prayer International (www.24-7prayer.com) and the Lectio 365 Prayer App. I'm just scratching the surface, and I still have a lot to learn, but throughout this season, I vowed that my next church (that's you!) would bathe everything in prayer. Intercession and healing, praying for events, prayer vigils, fasting. Prayer is the fuel of the Church, the key to revival. It fueled what we read about in Acts, and it's been the catalyst for all the movements and revivals of the church throughout history. Those of you in Kairos and Emmaus have witnessed this.

So I would like to lay the foundation for the vow I made. I've discovered some great prayer tools. Maybe you have discovered others. We need to share what works and encourage one another to experiment to find what fits each one of us. Some of you have the gift of

intercessory prayer. I know this is a praying church. If we want God to do what He did in Acts, then we pray. Do it again, God!

So today is week three of our four part series on prayer called FUEL: When the Church

P.R.A.Y.s. (previous messages in the series can be found on our Facebook page). Prayer is the gasoline we pour on the fire of revival. We are using Pete Grieg's book, How to Pray - A Simple Guide for Normal People as our primary resource (THIS book is worth reading!), and this Fall, on Tuesdays, in response to the series, you're invited to join us for an eight week prayer immersion exploring the Lord's Prayer with the 24-7 Prayer Course

(https://prayercourse.org/home/). I am truly excited to see what God will do with our praying church

Here's the messages . . .

August 8 - Why Pray? Keeping It Simple, Keeping It Real, and Keeping It Up August 15 - Pause and Rejoice: How to Be Still and Worship God

August 22 - Ask: How to Petition God August 29 - Yield: How to Hear God

Hello all, it's come to my attention that several imposter emails have gone out to members 102

of the church likely to solicit gift cards. Please disregard. Know that I would not approach you 103

in such a manner and that if I were to contact you, I would use the email address with the fumcl.org domain. 104

If you received such an email, you can let me know. The more concerning news is that this person has 105

accessed church member's emails. Thanks - Pastor Stan 106

Disciple Fast Track Bible Study: Gauging Interest for Fall 2021

111

First UMC is attempting to gauge interest in offering a virtual version of Disciple Fast Track Bible Study beginning 112

this September. 113

114

Disciple Fast Track, an adaptation of the original Disciple Bible Study, provides a viable option

115

for busy people seeking comprehensive engagement over time with the entire biblical text. Fast Track

116

groups meet for a total of 24 weeks, devoting 12 weeks each to the Old Testament and the New

117

Testament. Participants read a manageable 3-5 chapters of the Bible daily in preparation for

118

the weekly online meetings, which last approximately 90 minutes. A brief, illustrated review video

119

enables participants to recall important facts and ideas; lively and engaging video presenters then offer

120

insights into the current week’s session.

121 122

All Disciple sessions are led by one or more experienced laypersons. Resources needed to

123

participate include a Bible (a study Bible is most helpful), the Disciple Study Manual (available through

124

First UMC) and an Internet or other connection capable of receiving audio and video. If

125

you participate in First UMC’s Zoom prayer or Sunday school session, you likely have the connectivity

126

needed to participate.

127 128

This year we are offering Disciple II, which focuses on Genesis, Exodus, Luke, and Acts. The sessions

129

will likely be held on Tuesday evenings over Zoom.

130

Interested? If so, provide Dave Meixner with your contact information (Name, email address and

131

preferred phone number) by email ([email protected], cc [email protected]) and the

132

study in which you are interested.

133 134

If you have questions, contact Dave Meixner, at cell 240-278-4950 or [email protected].

173

174

My last visit with “Miss Dolores” was only a few days before her passing. I

175

find great comfort in the knowledge that we finished so well. I happened to

176

show up at her door as she and Mr. Dolores (Oliver) were getting ready

177

to enjoy their dinner. Instead of asking me to come back later, they invited

178

me in to sit at their table and offered me dinner. That’s really being Family,

179

and I petition the Lord to fill the void Miss Dolores has left with another

180

good, Godly woman of her caliber. First church will be the Host church of

181

Miss Dolores's funeral celebration.

182

183

With that behind me, I will be able to return to my “Voice in the wilderness”

184

writings. Next week, I will begin with a teaching moment on “The Gift of

185

Tears,” as promised several weeks ago. Unlike my tears of sorrow in the

186

past 2 weeks, which were emotional. The Gift of Tears is a joyful personal

187

manifestation of the Holy Spirit.

188

189

I share this gift with Odile Martin of the choir, who joyfully has allowed me

190

to include her in this teaching moment. There are 2 of us in First Church

191

with this blessing. Until I return, read Isaiah 30:8-11 with a focus on verses

192

9-10. God's words, as true for our American society as they were for Israel.
