SUREedge Software Appliance (vmware)
Installation Guide
Thank you for choosing SUREedge®
This guide describes the procedure to obtain and install SUREedge software appliance on a vmware server. The steps are as follows:
1. vmware server pre-requisites 2. Download software
3. SUREedge Software Appliance Installation
Step 1: vmware server pre-requisites
The SUREedge software appliance will install two pieces of software:
- First is the “SUREedge Storage Virtual Machine” installed on the vmware ESXi server
- Second is the “SUREedge management console” software installed on the Windows system identified in Step 1 To install the “SUREedge Storage Virtual Machine”, following are the pre-requisites:
● Identify a vmware ESXi 5.x server
● Identify a “datastore” on the above vmware server ● This “datastore” will be used to:
o create the “SUREedge Storage Virtual Machine” o store backup data
o recover backed up virtual machines for local disaster recovery ● Install VMware tools on the ESXi server VM’s
● Note: special characters should not be used for VM names
To install the “SUREedge management console” software, following are the prerequisites: ● Identify a Windows 8, 8.1 system in the network – virtual machine or physical
● Ensure that Windows .NET framework 3.5 is installed on the system. If it is not installed, explicitly install it. Note that any other version (higher or lower) will not suffice.
● The SUREedge Management Console software will be installed on this Windows system
Eg: Below is a screenshot of a vmware ESXi server management console displaying the Windows 8.1 virtual machine. As per the above pre-requisites:
- 192.168.20.86 is the ESXi 5.1 server - datastore1 is the vmware datastore
- Win8.1(MC) is the name of the Windows virtual machine (Please do not give spaces in the VM name) o Login into this virtual machine and ensure .NET 3.5 is installed
Step 2: Download Software
1.1) Register at Sureline website to download the software. Use the following link:
http://www.surelinesystems.com/registration/
1.2) You will receive an email with following information
● Link to download the SUREedge Software appliance on vmware ● Evaluation License as an attachment
● Link to the SUREedge Guides and tools
Step 3: SUREedge Software Appliance Installation
The installation of the SUREedge software appliance is a simple single workflow procedure described in steps below: ● Wait for download to complete (initiated in Step 2)
● Double click on the installer to start the installation procedure
● The first screen is a “Welcome screen”
● The second screen is to Upload License File
The license key file is an attachment in the email. Download the attachment file on the Windows system where SUREedge is to be installed. Click on “Browse” button in the “Upload License” dialog. Specify the full path for the downloaded license file.
● The third screen is to accept the “License Agreement”
● The fourth screen is to gather the VMWare ESXi server details
- Specify the IP address of the vmware ESXi server identified in Step 1 o In the current example, this is 192.168.20.86
- Specify the password for the root user
- Specify the name of the datastore on the vmware ESXi server where the SUREedge software appliance is to be installed
o In the current example, this is “datastore1”
- Specify the datastore size to be used for storing backup data. Please note that this should be at least equal to the amount of data to be backed up.
● The fifth screen is for SUREedge Configuration details
- Specify the credentials for the user with administrator privileges. This user is the local user on the Windows system where installation is in progress.
o In the current example, the local user with administrator rights on the Windows system is “Windows8-1-MC\Admin”
- Specify an IP address that is not used by any system on the network. This IP address will be used by the “SUREedge Storage Virtual Machine”
o In the current example, this IP address is 192.168.20.100 (This is not used by any system in the network) - OPTIONAL choice: Enable the check box for “Enable Data Encryption” if the data is to be encrypted. If this is not
● The sixth screen is encryption configuration
This screen will appear only if “Enable Data Encryption” is enabled.
The encryption used is AES256 with the encryption key derived from password and pass-phrase. Hence in this dialog to enable encryption, specify these values.
- Specify the Password value and confirm by keying again - Specify Pass-Phrase
● The seventh screen is an Install confirmation dialog
● Installation Progress and Completion Pages
The installation progress will be displayed in the installation dialog. The installation will run for around 15 minutes. Once the installation is done, click on the “Finish” button.
System roboot is needed to complete the installation.
As a part of the installation a new “SUREedge Storage Virtual Machine” is created on the vmware datastore. In the current example, refer to the screenshot of vmware management console below:
The SUREedge software appliance is successfully installed and ready for use.
- Open the “Firefox” web-browser and type the Name / IP address of the Windows system where SUREedge is installed o In our example the Windows system is the Windows virtual machine on the vmware server
- Login into the SUREedge console and start using the product o Username: SuperAdmin
o Password: Sure@1234
