Introduction

Welcome to the Riverbed TurboCap Gigabit Ethernet Packet Capture system.

This Installation Guide will guide you through the procedure to install both the hardware and the software components that are part of the TurboCap product.

Requirements

The minimum requirements to install and run the TurboCap Software are:

 Pentium-D (dual core) processor or multiple CPUs (SMP), 2.8GHz

 2GB RAM

 50MB free disk space on the hard drive plus additional space for capture (trace) file. Disk performance is key to full-rate packet dump to disk.

 PCIe 4x or 8x slot. 8 lanes are required for the 4-port board.

 One of the following operating systems: Windows XP Service Pack 2, Windows Vista or Windows 7. The software supports both 32- and 64- bit (AMD64/EM64T) operating systems.

What is in the Box

 One TurboCap board

Download the Installation Software Disk Image

The latest Windows Installation Disk ISO image is located at:

http://www.cacetech.com/downloads.html

Once your download is complete burn the image onto a Blank CD.

What is in the Disk Image

The TurboCap Software Distribution Disk Image contains:

 The TurboCap driver

 This Installation Guide

 The TurboCap User’s Guide

 The Wireshark® Network Analyzer

 The TurboCap developer’s kit, for developers interested in directly accessing the features of the TurboCap board from their applications.

The developer’s kit is installed as part of the driver installation.

Hardware Installation

This section will describe how to install the TurboCap board on a PC. To install the board, follow these steps:

1. Power off your PC and unplug the power cable.

2. Open the PC chassis and locate an available PCIe 4x or 8x slot.

NOTE: Most PCs have a PCIe 16x slot dedicated for graphics cards, called PEG (PCI Express Graphics). Do not install the TurboCap board in such a slot; these slots do not support 4x or 8x speeds when not used with a graphics card.

(7)

3. Insert the TurboCap board into the slot securing it in place.

4. Close the chassis, connect the power cable, and restart the system.

Driver Installation (Windows XP/Vista/7)

Important: Do NOT install the software before installing the TurboCap board. Please follow the steps above to install the hardware first.

To install the software, follow these steps:

1. Power on your PC.

2. Depending on the operating system version, at the first reboot after installing the board, Windows may show the “Found New Hardware Wizard” (Figure 1) or “Found New Hardware” (Figure 2) once per port.

Click on “Cancel”.

On Windows 7, a tooltip will appear on the bottom right corner first telling you that Windows is “installing the device driver software,” and then that the “Device driver software was not successfully installed.” (See Figure 3).

Please ignore this message.

4. The CD setup page should appear automatically. If it does not, please select your CD-Rom Drive and manually open the setup page.

6. Follow the installation instructions. The installer tries to detect if WinPcap is already installed in the machine and if the installed WinPcap version supports the TurboCap board. If not, you will be asked to upgrade WinPcap during the installation.

(10)

7. For Windows XP: During the installation, the operating system may show a “Security Alert” dialog (Figure 5). Choose “Yes”.

For Windows Vista: During the installation, the operating system may show a “Windows Security” dialog (Figure 6). Choose “Install this driver software anyway”.

Wireshark Network Analyzer Installation

Wireshark is the world’s most widely deployed network analyzer. It is used by network professionals for troubleshooting, analysis, software and protocol

development, and education. Your TurboCap board has been integrated with Wireshark. Once Wireshark has been installed you can immediately start capturing and analyzing Ethernet traffic.

To install Wireshark, follow these steps:

1. If you have a previous version of Wireshark already installed in your system, uninstall it by clicking on:

Start » Control Panel » Add or Remove Programs » Wireshark 2. Insert the TurboCap Software Distribution CD into your CD drive.

(12)

3. The CD setup page should appear automatically. If it does not, please select your CD-Rom Drive manually to open the setup page.

Developer’s Resources Installation

Riverbed provides a developer’s pack with everything you need for using a TurboCap board with your application for capturing Ethernet packets:

 Header and lib files

 Online API documentation

 A ready-to-compile set of example programs that shows how to configure the board and capture packets

The TurboCap Developer’s Kit can be found in the “devpack” folder of the TurboCap installation folder (usually c:\Program Files\CACE

Technologies\TurboCap). A handy link to this folder is provided under:

Start » All Programs » TurboCap » Developer’s Kit.
