Peace Be With You
When the churches reopened for Liturgical cele- braƟons, we, the clergy, oŌen got the quesƟon,
“When are we going to give the sign of peace?”
Maybe to some of us, we felt the Mass was incom- plete without sharing the "sign" of peace before re- ceiving Holy Communion. We have observed in the past months that, even without the priest saying,
“let us oīer each other the sign of peace,” the con- gregaƟon sƟll oīered peace to everyone while the priest was doing the fracƟon of the Most Precious Body of Christ. Let’s explore the roots and meaning of this gesture:
“The spiritual symbolism of the act is found in the Gospel of MaƩhew, where Jesus said, ‘If you are oīering your giŌ at the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your giŌ there before the altar and go; Įrst be rec- onciled to your brother, and then come and oīer your giŌ.’ (MaƩhew 5:23-24)
“The early ChrisƟan community took to heart the instrucƟons of Jesus and incorporated the acƟon in- to their celebraƟons of the Eucharist. In fact, the Ap- ostolic ConsƟtuƟons, a 4th century document, in- structs that aŌer the Prayer of the Faithful, “let the bishop salute the church, and say, ‘the peace of God be with you all.’ And let the people answer, ‘and with your spirit’; and let the deacon say to all,
‘salute one another with the holy kiss.’
“The kiss of peace was typically given only to those standing next to each other, and it was later developed that the kiss of peace descended from the sanctuary and was passed on to the people, symbol- izing that peace comes from Christ. This was even
further cemented when the priest would Įrst kiss the Altar and then pass on that kiss to his aƩendants.”
(refer to hƩps://aleteia.org/)
However, in the 2005 Synod of Bishops, there was a discussion about the appropriateness of greater restraint in this gesture. The Synod ex- pressed concerns about the abuses of the sign of peace. The list includes singing a song of peace, peo- ple moving around the church to exchange peace, priests leaving the altar to give peace to the people in the pews or replacing the word ‘peace” with con- dolences at funerals or congratulaƟons on other oc- casions. These become a moment of distracƟon and a disrupƟon of the solemnity and sancƟty of the Mass, especially when we are in the Real Presence of Christ at the Altar.
One should know that the exchange of peace comes aŌer the consecraƟon because it refers to
“the Paschal kiss of the risen Christ present on the altar.” It is not a personal greeƟng to each other.
(From the circular leƩer of the CongregaƟon for Di- vine Worship and the Sacraments on the ritual ex- pression of the giŌ of peace at Mass)
The guidelines from the Holy See also states that, “If it is foreseen that it will not take place properly due to speciĮc circumstances or if it is not considered pedagogically wise to carry it out on cer- tain occasions, it can be omiƩed, and someƟmes ought to be omiƩed. It is worth recalling that the rubric from the Missal states: ‘Then, if appropriate, the Deacon or the Priest, adds: Let us oīer each oth- er the sign of peace.’”

Reading II: I John 4: 7-10
Christ has shown us God’s love, so we ought to do the same to others. Love must be seen as God’s iniƟaƟve.
The Gospel: John 15: 9-17
The mutual love John describes is ground- ed in the fact that both Jesus and the disciples keep the commandments and abide in the love of the Father. We, as Jesus’ chosen friends, must obey His one command to love one another.

278. “What does Hosanna mean and why do we use it in the Liturgy?“
In St. MaƩhew’s Gospel we read, “Hosanna to the Son of David; blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord; hosanna in the highest.” (21:9) What exactly does the word “hosanna” mean, and why would the crowd shout it about Jesus at this Ɵme?
Hosanna is a transliteraƟon of the Hebrew word
“hosi-ah-na,” which means to save or rescue, or
designates the person who saves or rescues. According to Strong’s Concordance, the “-na” suĸx is used to express
“intense emoƟon.”
While originally the word was originally used as a prayer of intercession asking for God to intervene and save His people -- Psalm 118:25 says, “Lord, grant salvaƟon! Lord, grant good fortune!” -- by Jesus’ day, the word had become a shout of jubilaƟon, a statement of praise because God had saved His people. At the Jewish feast of Tabernacles and at Passover, the word conƟnues to be used in this way.
Gradually, this phrase saw its meaning develop as well, acquiring what Pope Benedict XVI in his book “Jesus of Nazareth” described as “messianic signiĮcance.” “It had become,” Pope Benedict writes, “praise of Jesus, a greeƟng to Him as the one who comes in the name of the Lord, the one awaited and proclaimed by all the
promises.” So, in shouƟng “Hosanna” as Jesus entered Jerusalem, the disciples were acknowledging Him as the Messiah, the promised one sent from God to save Israel.
We conƟnue to say a variaƟon of this phrase from
MaƩhew every Ɵme we parƟcipate in the Mass. We pray,
“Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.” In so doing, we recognize once again (as the crowd did on that day in Jerusalem) that Jesus is Lord, the promised one of God who comes to save us. Our prayers have been answered.
Now, we celebrate God’s saving power and love for us.

Bill Targeting Pregancy Centers Advances
On April 19, the New York State Assembly Health Com- miƩee voted to advance A5499/S470, a bill intended to conduct a “study” of pro-life pregnancy centers. The bill would enable the Health Commissioner to subpoena pro-life centers and force them to produce an over- whelming volume of data and reports. The pre-determined outcome of the “study” is to Įnd the centers “limited” because they do not provide aborƟon or aborƟon referrals.
Take acƟon to protect pregnancy centers and the valuable work they do in oīering women real help in Ɵmes of crisis.
1. Take AcƟon
Contact your legislators and urge them to op- pose this bill.
2. Learn More
Read the memorandum of opposiƟon from the New York State Catholic Conference.
3. Pray
Please pray for the protecƟon of all pregnancy centers. May women in need of help be able to ac- cess the life-giving services of these centers without interference. May vulnerable women and their un- born children conƟnue to Įnd a refuge in the hearts of those who serve in crisis pregnancy centers.
