John Munro: Contributions to Coral Reef

Fisheries Science

John Munro has contributed to our understanding of coral reef fisheries resources, and how to manage them, in an extra-ordinary way. His contributions began when he introduced fisheries science to the small-scale coral reef fisheries of the developing island states of the Caribbean in 8 years. This was truly groundbreaking work, and John is widely regarded as the “father of tropical fish stock assessment” for the research he did there.

The Pacific Islands were the next to benefit from John’s experience and commitment to help coastal communities in developing countries. In addition to training many young scientists at the University of Papua New Guinea in the management of inshore fisheries resources, he played a major role in alerting the region to the plight of giant clams. John then joined the WorldFish Center (or the International Center for Living Aquatic Resources Management as it was known then) and, for the past 20 years has led programs, projects and initiatives to improve the well-being of coastal people who depend on fish for their livelihood. His work with us began with the launching of efforts in the Pacific and Southeast Asia to restore severely depleted stocks of the largest giant clam, Tridacna gigas, in collaboration with scientists from Australia, the Philippines and Micronesia. As part of this initiative, John established our facilities in Solomon Islands. While there, he also secured the first funding to start the work we have since been doing on farming pearl oysters and restocking sea cucumbers. John then moved to the Center’s previous headquarters in Manila where he supervised more than 20 research projects on coastal resources.

In 1996, John returned to his first love – solid scientific work in the field, this time back in the Caribbean, where he set up our regional office and focused on the role of marine protected areas, improved management of trap fisheries and the potential for adding value to spiny lobster fisheries through the capture and culture of peurulus larvae.

The range of issues that John has investigated in an effort to provide benefits to coral reef resources users in the developing world is unparalleled. It is with much pleasure and appreciation that the WorldFish Center produces this list of his published scientific papers and reports, and those currently in preparation, which together span 35 years of research on fisheries and aquaculture in tropical seas. I commend these valuable contributions to all those interested in learning more about the biology and management of our fragile, valuable coral reef resources.

Please note that the publications in the list marked with a location code are available in the WorldFish Library collection. Requests for them should be forwarded to our librarian (email: worldfish-library@cgiar.org).
