> Prince Philip was a young man of 30 when he walked through this crowd of children in Salmon Arm 70 years ago in October. Princess Eliz-abeth, at the time, is on his left. The Duke of Edinburgh died on April 9, two months short of his 100th birthday.

ystems are not all go. Our health system, our private and public systems, and our personal mental health systems are indeed stretched to the limits this past extraordinary year. Yet there’s much humming along as per usual behind the scenes. Even the over burdened health system has proved it can work on other issues amid the chaos of a global pandemic. The best example is the $3.3 million fundraiser for a new replacement CT Scanner and a Mammography Unit at the hospital. The new CT Scanner will assist in pro-viding 24/7 service for regular and emer-gency needs. The Mammography Unit will be part of a new breast health program, enabling patients to receive services here instead of travelling out of town.

Just over $1 million remains to be raised for this campaign. Check out the website shuswaphospitalfoundation.org; the kiosk at Piccadilly; or the May 20 Radiothan. There are many more examples that life as we’ve known it is waiting in the wings.

It’s National Volunteer Week April 19 to 25. Each year Canada honours those who volunteer in their communities to make things happen. I would like to thank all the volunteers who have helped the Seniors Drop-in on Hudson provide activities, programs and space for renters. We are tempo-rarily closed due to the Covid-19 virus, but once all is clear we hope to start up again so we can do the much needed socializing activities once again. The Theme for this year is: “It’s time to applaud this country’s volunteers.”

> It’s like the ‘tide is out’ on Salmon Arm Bay, way out. We need rain and plenty of it to drench and replenish the fields, forests and the lake basin. The coming snowpack will not suffice. The expanse of drying mudflats looks tidy, but if there are debris and gabage, this is an opportune time to clear it away. Meanwhile the amount of garbage in the region’s ditches is out of control.

e are coping and liv-ing in unprecedented and confusing times. There were two permitless rallies this weekend next to the Blackburn Park playground. The Friday afternoon event was billed as part of a tour by the leader of the People’s Party of Canada, Maxeme Bernier. The Saturday event drew well over 300 people from far and wide, and it was billed as a food security event. Masks were no-tably absent at both rallies, there were common themes of con-spiracies and loss of freedoms, curious alliances, and a surpris-ing lack of police presence. Confusion for the uninitiated. n

S

chool District Board is making a decision on potentially having two separate high schools in Salmon Arm - one at Sullivan and the other at Jackson - both Grades 9 to 12.

Who gets to go to the newer high school and who gets stuck at the old one? Is this the best decision? The “E5” option is not even a part of the facilities report prepared by the consul-tant - it is one that the outgo-ing Superintendant came up with sometime in the last year. I think trustees truly need to hear where parents and students stand on this. We need another elemen-tary and a high school in the region, but I think the high school needs to be in the South Shuswap.

Covid-19 has dramatically changed the landscape. All population growth trends have

been upended with families relocating to the Shuswap for small towns and rural living. Which students will get the privilege of going to Sullivan and which ones will go to Jack-son? SD83 cannot offer equita-ble opportunities for students at both schools without millions of dollars invested in Jackson. Why does this decision about dramatically changing the social fabric of our community need to happen in May 2021, after a year of unprecedented change with Covid-19? Schools are the fabric of our communities. A decision to create two separate Grades 9 to 12 high schools in Salmon Arm should not be made be-fore having a fully transparent talk about the implications - with ALL of the stakeholders, including our youth.

> I misread a few memos in my years at school as well. In fact, I was away on the day they taught my class about the little squiggly thing at the bottom right corner of the let-ter Q. The teacher kept trying to “Cue” me in, but I kept saying “Oh”.. It wasn’t until my first day of journalism

class, and they handed me a typewriter. I asked the professor, “What’s this key for?” The professor totally lost it, and said, “Queen’s bees!! What are they sending me??” My first assign-ment was “10 Ouestions to always ask in an interview.” > “Everybody is a genius. > “I oppose the idea that the school has to teach directly that special knowledge and those accomplishments which one has to use later directly in life. The demands of life are much too manifold to let such a specialized training in school appear possible...
