The Common Shelduck Tadorna ttadorna fis one oftthe 42 specfies of ducks, geese andswansfound fin Indfia belongfing tto tthe famfily Anafidae(Rahmanfi &Islam 2008; Praveen ett al. 2016).Itt breedsfin partts of Europe, Medfitterranean, centtral Asfia tthrough easttern Sfiberfia, Mongolfia and Tfibett(Alfi & Rfipley 1987). Durfing wfintter,fittfis wfidespread, fincludfing nortthern Afrfica, Iran, tthe Indfian subconfinentt, coasttal Chfina, soutthwesttern Korea, Japan and Tafiwan (Alfi & Rfipley 1987).InIndfia,fittfis an uncommon vfisfittortto nortthern partts of penfinsularIndfia, however,fittfis rarely recorded from soutthern penfinsula (Rahmanfi &Islam 2008). Thfis nottereporttstthe firstt sfighfing of tthe Common Shelduckfrom Karnattaka.
On 24 November 2016,tthe firstt autthor had noficed a whfitte and a black duckfin a lock ofseven Ruddy Shelduck Tadornaferrugfinea on tthe banks of tthe Shefikerfi ttank fin Gadag Dfisttrfictt, Karnattaka. Whfile observfing tthrough bfinoculars,fitt was found tthatt tthe duck had a greenfish -black head and neck, whfitte body wfitth a chesttnutt band ontthe breastt, and a blackscapularsttrfipe. The abovesafid morphologfical charactterfisfics of tthe duck corresponded wfitthtthe Common Shelduck Tadorna ttadorna (Grfimmett ett al. 2011). Afew phottographs(Images 1 & 2) were alsottakentto endorsetthefidenfificafion oftthespecfies because of pottenfial mfisfidenfificafion oftthe Shelduck wfitth domesficatted ducks.
Shefikerfittank(15.181388890N & 75.558055560E)
fislocattedfin tthe Shfirahafi Taluk of Gadag Dfisttrfictt, Karnattaka wfitth asfize of 94.95ha. Shefikerfittank and
nearby Magadfi ttank harbours a large congregafion of wfintter vfisfittorsfincludfingtthousands of Bar-headed Geese vfisfifingtthesettanks every year. Consfiderfingfitts sfignfificancefinttheconservafion of mfigrattory wettland bfirds,tthe Magadfi-Shefikerfittanks wererecognfised as Importtantt Bfird Areas(BfirdlfifeIntternafional 2018). Agafin on 02December 2016, a male Common Shelduck was observed swfimmfing amfid a lock of 36 Ruddy Shelducks. Asuccessfive vfisfittttotthettank on 10 December 2016 fafiled tto dettectt tthe Common Shelduck, however, Ruddy Shelducks were roosfing on tthe banks of tthe ttank.
Otther records of tthe specfies from tthe soutthern penfinsula (Ffig. 1) are Carambolfin-Dhado Wettland complex and Narve-Tfikhazan Marsh fin Goa (ebfird), Chfilfika Lake fin Odfisha (Balachandran ett al. 2005), Pulficatt Lakefin Andhra Pradesh (Taher 2016), and efightt locafions fin Maharashttra vfiz.: Malkhed Reservofir, Amravafi(Wadattkar & Wagh 2014), Sonvad Dam(eBfird), Chandfika Devfi Mandfir, Jalgaon (eBfird), Kavdfi-Pune (eBfird), Kumbhargaon Bfird Sancttuary (eBfird), Bhandup

lfimfitt oftthespecfies(Taher 2016). Whfilerevfiewfing a recenttcompfilafion of bfirds of Karnattaka(Praveen ett al. 2016),fitt was found tthatt tthe Common Shelduck was nott reportted from tthe sttatte earlfier. Hence,fittfis a firstt reportt for tthe sttatte and tthe Common Shelduck appears lfike a vagrantt tto some partts of Karnattaka and soutthern penfinsularIndfia.
