In another sense it refers to the defensive

military struggle against those who would attack Muslims and their faith (holy war).

It states in the Koran, that if a devout

Muslim dies during the act of jihad then they automatically go to Paradise.

Some Muslim leaders, like Osama Bin Laden,

 Saddam Hussein, the dictator of Iraq

invaded the country of Kuwait

He wanted access to the Persian Gulf for trade

He also wanted more control over oil fields

 The U.S. and other nations told him to

get out of Kuwait or they would attack him

He refused and the war began

(17)

Instead of getting Hussein out of power, the world told him to stay out of Kuwait and they kept an eye on him

One way that they did this was regular inspections to make sure he was not

building “weapons of mass destruction” (nuclear, chemical, or biological weapons)

▪ Hussein had a history of war not only with Kuwait, but with Iran

on trial by the newly elected

government of Iraq for “crimes against humanity”

 He was found guilty and was executed

(21)

 Weapons inspectors later determined

that Saddam Hussein did not actually have weapons of mass destruction in Iraq

Some people think other countries helped him dispose of evidence

Others think we went into the war for oil

(22)

 The U.S. remained in Iraq until last

2010, even though Saddam Hussein was gone

 “Insurgents” (people who were fighting

against America in Iraq) continued to cause instability as the new

government was being established
