Caring since 1981

Winter 2021

Refl ecting on 2020, I am proud of the excellent job that our staff have done, as well as the front-line workers around the world. We head into 2021 with a vaccine, giving hope for the year ahead. We will continue to do what we can to return life to some normality this year.

Our Christmas celebrations, albeit different, were fi lled with delicious food, lots of engaging activities and most importantly, an abundance of laughter... The best antidote to a pandemic don’t you think? I hope you enjoy seeing lots of photos of our activities throughout this newsletter.

We celebrated the 31st Anniversary of our care home to show our gratitude for the dedication, loyalty and contribution of our staff.

Thank you for all of the continued support from our relatives, friends, staff and residents. Let us all continue to stay safe, follow the guidelines and maintain all of the hard work, helping us to welcome better times to come.

Welcome to Cedar Lodge

Home News

Daphne was born in Stevenage in 1931. At the age of 2, she moved to Hitchin where she lived with her parents and younger brother. When she left school, she went to Newland Park Teaching College, where she met John and they married straight after qualifying as teachers. John went on to teach Secondary education while Daphne chose to teach in a junior school.

After a year living in London, they spent 5 years in various places before settling on the new Britwell Estate, that had been specifically built for teacher’s housing.

Finding their perfect family home in Burnham, they spent 60 happy years there growing their family. They welcomed three children into the world; Gareth, Johnathan and Rebecca. Daphne and John shared a love of the UK and enjoyed exploring the countryside by bike, along with many family holidays to the seaside in Wales and Cornwall.

As a keen historian, Daphne has published numerous books on the history of Burnham. She co-authored “Around Burnham: From Old Photographs”, which can even be purchased on Amazon. When she retired, she was eager to delve into her family history, which inspired another book that was also published.

Having moved to Cedar Lodge a year ago, Daphne settled into life at the care home quickly and is very sociable, participating in many of the group activities. She can often be heard saying “You’ve got to try everything once”. Keeping her mind active, Daphne has a love for quizzes, crosswords, scrabble and dominoes… wining the Cedar Lodge Dominoes plaque on many occasions.

Kindness Tree

In our endeavours to spread the right kind of positivity, our residents have been sharing words of kindness that we are proudly displaying in our reception for all to see and read. “As we enter 2021, I’m not sure there

can be many people who will not be pleased to see the back of 2020!! This year starts with the prospect of better times ahead and a return to some sort of normal life, with the biggest factor being the Covid vaccine roll-out. After a few false starts and logistical challenges, I am very pleased to say that all our residents and staff have received their first vaccine dose during January. Second doses will be given towards the end of March. The vaccine roll-out is great news for all of us. It offers protection from the virus as well as a route back to normality and I would urge everyone to take up the offer of having the

vaccine as soon as it is available to you. Until sufficient numbers of people have been vaccinated, the risks still remain, particularly with new variants of the virus emerging.

We very much hope that the continued vaccine roll-out, and potential lifting of restrictions, will allow some form of face-to-face visiting to resume as soon as possible as that will make such a difference to everyone. The option of outdoor visiting will also become available again soon, which in itself will allow visits to take place in a more personal way than has been possible recently.

In the meantime, we continue to try and make life as normal as possible for our residents and I hope you enjoy our latest newsletter which highlights the many varied activities that take place every day.

A big “thank you” to all our staff who make all this happen and who continue to rise to the challenge in the face of everything that has been thrown at them. An equally big “thank you” to all our relatives for your continued support, patience and understanding.”

Christmas at Cedar Lodge

Every year Cedar Lodge hosts a Christmas pantomime that brings smiles and laughter to the care home. With outside entertainers prohibited due to lockdown restrictions, staff at Cedar Lodge took it upon themselves to host their very own pantomime.... Cedar-ella!

Relatives were still able to enjoy the show by virtual attendance.

Thank you to Mrs Chevous who kindly narrated the wonderful production.

Residents clapped along to music, booed, cheered and laughed with the staff as they brushed up on their stage skills.

The performance certainly brought smiles and joy to our residents… which is all we could wish for.

Celebrating the 31st anniversary of Cedar Lodge was a little different than we are used to, but it was a lot of fun nonetheless. Relatives virtually attended the gathering, watching from the safety of their own homes. Frank, owner of Forest Care, also joined the team for the occasion to say a few words.

A big “Thank you” to JoJo who whipped up an incredibly cake for the occasion. Delicious!

Our residents enjoyed many festive meals freshly prepared by Head Chef Bhanu.

Whether it was in the lounge or in their rooms, residents thoroughly enjoyed opening their presents from family, friends and staff on Christmas day together.

From “Pin the Tail on the Cat” to a group game of spooky skittles, Halloween at Cedar Lodge was a fun filled day of themed activities and delicious treats.

Cheyanne has worked at Cedar Lodge for almost 8 years. Starting as a Kitchen Assistant, she demonstrated a passion for caring and quickly made the step to become a Care Assistant.

She is incredibly passionate about helping others and providing person-centered care to every resident. She is our Manual Handling Trainer and is a fully certifi ed First Aider. Showing strong leadership and communication skills, we can see Cheyanne is eager to progress her caring career within the team.

What do you like most about being a Carer?

I love listening to the resident’s stories, they are fascinating. Being a Care Assistant is hard work and diffi cult at times but it’s very rewarding and I really enjoy it. Cedar Lodge feels like home and I enjoy coming to work in the morning. Christmas is my favourite time of year at the care home. The team make it such a magical place to be.

Feedback Corner

Thank you to everyone who has sent in kind words of encouragement to us all through these diffi cult times.

The service and treatment my mother-in-law got were second to none. I was very pleased with everything they did for her and would recommend your home to anyone.

Cedar Lodge is in the excellent, capable hands of its manager.

She and her staff run the care home as a team and it is the strength of the teamwork that makes the home so outstanding as they cater for all the needs of their residents. I feel Cedar Lodge does go the extra mile for its residents, their families and friends.

Cedar Lodge is deserving of the highest praise as all the staff have worked so hard to keep the home safe during this dreadful pandemic,

The quality of care and kindness that Mum has received is second to none. As her daughter, I can relax, being 100% confi dent that she is being looked after in a respectful, caring and dignifi ed way, and Mum herself says how marvellous the staff are. I have personally found all staff extremely friendly and helpful, and always willing to answer any questions I may have. They also provide regular updates on Mum’s condition which I fi nd very helpful. I would highly recommend Cedar Lodge.

Thank You

A special “Thank you” to the children at Ravenscote Junior

School who took the time to make each resident a “hearts

for care homes” Christmas message and drawing.

Every year the school children come to perform their

Christmas carols for our residents. With lockdown

prohibiting them to visit in 2020, the children recorded

the performance and delivered a DVD to the home for

residents to watch. We were overwhelmed with their

generosity of spirit. The residents spent a lovely morning

reading the messages and watching the performance.
