On August 31 longtime member May Wynia passed away at the age of 108. May joined FPC in 1943. She served as Sunday School superintendent for almost 60 years and was involved in the Helping Hand Storeroom from its inception.
Congratulations to Craig and Vicki Shadle on the birth of granddaughter Kaydence Elise Shadle on September 6. Kaydence’ parents are Tyler and Amanda Shadle.
Donna Iverson and her sister Valerie Turner sent a note of appreciation for the support their family has received from FPC through the years. Donna moved recently and you may call the church office for her new address. Rides to church during October are provided by Deacon Carolyn Stucker. Call the assigned deacon or the church office to make arrangements. PLEASE don’t hesitate to take advantage of this service. Your presence in worship is important to your church family.
HARVEST DINNER
Autumn brings falling leaves, crisp, cool air and, of course, the Harvest Dinner. The youth of the church will prepare and serve this annual meal on Sunday, October 26. Mark your calendar! Dinner is served at 5:00 p.m. Call the church office, 377-7309, by Wednesday, October 22, to make your reservation or to have a meal delivered.
In November the youth will be offering their services for raking leaves. Watch the bulletin and next issue of First Press for more information.

AREOne of the positive outcomes of last year’s “Caring for Elderly Loved Ones” support group was a collection of information about services. If you are caring for an elderly loved one, or looking for general information about senior services, we now have four folders of information for your use in our church office.
These include: 1. an annotated list of website resources on many topics; 2. a list of books in our church library regarding aging and caregiving; 3. checklists to help organize documents and monitor senior health; and 4. information by the Presbyterian Foundation on estate planning.
Ask our office manager Karen Greene to direct you to these folders. You may take copies of this information and make additional copies if desired. Contact Connie Kent with questions.

It’s Socktober again! FPC is collecting children’s socks for Marion Cares’ Trick or Trunk on October
25. Contributions of new children’s socks of all sizes will be collected in baskets in the Social Hall.
CHURCH LIBRARY NEWS
This month we are featuring our collection of books for middle school youth. These include both classic and more recent fiction, several types of graphic Bibles, faith-based books and fun books like Bible Trivia and other humor. We will have some samples out on the display table in the library during the month of October. Find other selections in the Youth section, which is next to the kids’ DVDs.
For parents of middle-schoolers, we recommend Talk With Your Kids by Michael Parker, M.Ed. This is a collection of conversation starters to help kids aged 10 to 15 years understand why ethical behavior, such as trustworthiness and tolerance, is important, and to guide families in discussions about tough topics such as cyberbullying and cheating. We have two copies, which can be found in the Education for Parenthood section (12) of non-fiction. Copies also will be on sale at our annual Book Fair in November/December.

AN UPDATE ON THE PWCOOKBOOK
The 2014 PW Cookbook, Internally Nourishing, Externally Appealing has been sent to press! What a deal it will be – 555 recipes from your church family; a Pastor Howard original water color on the cover; suggested table graces from Pastor Howard, Pastor Beth, and Pastor Nancy; a brief history of the church; an index of recipes; and an index of contributors – all for $12.50 a book. What a deal!
Sales will begin on November 20. This date coincides with the first day of picture taking for the 2014 Church Directory, and although it is too late to submit a recipe, it is not too late to reserve a cookbook. Contact anyone on the committee to do so.
A “Taste of the Cookbook Sampling” is scheduled between services on Sunday, November 9th. We want to give you a chance to have a small taste of several recipes contained in the cookbook. If you are willing to make one of the recipes you submitted so that it can be “sampled” on November 9th, please sign up by October 15th on a sheet located at the south window of the kitchen or let anyone on the committee know you will volunteer to do this.
“Thanks” from the PW Cookbook Committee: Dixie Jurgens, Melanie Mabee, Ricky Machula, Barb Mineart, Shirley Pantini, and Verna Stutt.

We were hosts to Family Promise families the week of September 21-28. The program is full which means we had three families - four adults and four children. We provide an evening meal and a place to sleep. During the day, three of the adults went to work and the other adult attended a local college.
This is the fourth time we have hosted families this year. Our next hosting week is December 7 - 14.
I am grateful for all the volunteers who give their time to help the families reset their lives. From setup to making meals, to staying overnight and tearing down the space, you are helping the families regain their independence.

HILDWe would like to focus on older children and boys as they tend to have fewer boxes donated. Sewing kits and fishing kits are a good idea for older children.
For October, we would like to complete the collection of several items. These include but are not limited to socks, t-shirts, crayons, colored pencils, fishing supplies, hats and gloves. Toys are always helpful.
Boxes cost $8 to ship from the processing center to the final destination. If you choose, $25 can be pledged to help purchase necessary items to fill your box. Monetary donations and pledges are accepted all year to help defray the costs incurred.
The mission trips(s) to the processing center in Minneapolis is/are currently being planned. The adult only trip will be from Friday, December 12 to Saturday, December 13. There is an outside possibility of a youth trip. If your youth is interested, please contact me and Jess Kozloski. If you are interested in going on the adult trip, contact Carrie Dancey.
