Telangana, as a geographical and political entity .as born on >une *, *231 as the *Cth and the youngest state in 8nion of +ndia7 6o.ever, as an e conomic, social, cultural and historical entity it has a glorious history of at least t.o thousand five hundred years or more7 /egalithic stone structures li-e cairns, cists, dolmens and menhirs found in several districts of Telangana sho. that there .ere human habitations in this part of the country thousands of years ago7 $emnants of iron ore smelting found at many places demonstrate the hoary roots of artisanship and tool ma-ing in Telangana for at least t.o thousand years7 The reference to Asma-a >anapada, part of prese nt Telangana, as one of the 3E >anapadas in ancient +ndia proves that there e"isted an advanced stage of society7

ne of the first five disciples of the Buddha, ;ondanna is a typical name from Telangana and though there is no e"act information about his native place, the earliest -no.n Buddhist to.nship of ;ondapur in /eda- district is believed to be after him7 The Buddha himself famously ac-no.ledged that it .as ;ondanna .ho understood him properly7 The Buddhist sources say that Bavari, a Brahmin from Badana-urti in ;arimnagar sent his disciples to all the .ay to north +ndia to learn Buddhism and spread the message in this region7 /egasthenes, .ho visited +ndia in the 1th century B!, .rote that there .ere 2 fortified to.ns of Andhras and a ma) ority of them .ere in Telangana7 +n the historical age, Telangana had given rise to mighty empires and -ingdoms li-e the Satavahanas, :a-ata-as, + -shva-us, :ishnu-undins, halu-yas, ;a-atiyas, utb Shahis and Asif >ahis7 The emergence and flourishing of these po.erful political formations is in itself a proof of e"istence of a sturdy economic, social and cultural structure7

Thus Telangana has been a vibrant social entity by the time of the Buddha and continued to be so for the ne"t t.o and a half millennia7 !ndo.ed .ith such rich cultural heritage, despite the attempts by historians and scholars from Andhra region to obfuscate and erase its history, Telangana al.ays retained and fought for its self respect a nd self rule7 Due to the official efforts to ignore, erase, belittle and loo- do.n Telangana history and turn it into an appendage or a footnote, particularly during 3C4E# *231, much of Telangana history is either not properly researched or not recorded even if it .as studied7 Telangana rose again and secured its political identity no. and is in the process of resurrecting its o.n glorious past7 6ere is an attempt to rec onstruct the history of Telangana, the .onderful musical

!ven though e"tensive e"ploration has not been done, particularly sub)ected to neglect after 3C4E, the archaeological department under the %iHamsK government had done tremendous .or- in discovering the traces of pre#historical human habitations in Telangana7 These studies found that human habitations in parts of Telangana can be seen from the Paleolithic age consistently7 !ither the same locations or e"tended locations sho.ed people continued to live and develop through the later stages of

+n the historical age beginning from 3222 B! there are some references of Telangana as a geographical entity as .ell as Telugu as a linguistic entity, in t he contemporary Buddhist and
